That's the main reason I love John Petrucci's shredding. Beyond his ridiculous skills, he manages to take that crazy speed taht most shredders aim for and keeps the music. He remembers the fact thatit is a MUSICAL instrument. Granted, sometimes he gets carried away. Sometimes I'm sure it's intentional, other times it's probably not. But as awesome as he is and as hard as he works to make the shred just as meaningful as the song, he can splurge once in a while LOL.

Kincrimson: Show me one shredder who can play that fast and make it sound musical at all, and I'll be impressed. The fact is, shredding isn't supposed to be melodically sensible, or sound good as actual music, whatsoever. It's for showing off. Sadly, that's all people use these days to gauge proficiency in instruments, which is kind of bullshit when you remember that musical instruments are supposed to create music - not serve as wank tools.
