Ah yes, the sonic booms. They were kinda loud when they past over orange county, but most likely less loud then when they passed over the Los Angeles area.
I love the fact that this is the most advanced machine in the World...capable of so much...but it still needs a bit of red cloth at the end of the mission to make it stop :)
This clip is reach of details. Is sad this will be soon history. Unless the engineers are not inventing more powerful propulsion solutions (more kinetic energy/fuel mass/$ than the current chemical engines do) the future of space exploration will be rather bleak
@TheFutureIsRightHere No it is not. Regardless of how fast the craft is going as long as it is supersonic it will make a sonic boom. The boom is all the sound that the craft is generating piling up and then hitting you all at once.
Beauty. Sad to think that there is only one more shuttle mission left. But these girls are showing their age. Time to pack 'em off to the barn and push the next generation up.
@mach25man: Sorry to disagree. While I don't have access to the orbiters to do a complete inspection, any aircraft that endures such stresses will indeed have a very limited lifespan. Such is the nature of aviation. TBO on many of those components must be very close, if not exceeded, but allowed under stingent inspection. How many more launches left? I'd hate to miss them all.
the sonic boom was loud i heard it at work in LAX at first i thought it was a plane that crash but after i didn't see no fire then i saw the news paper an saw the shuttle was landing here in california
Start this: /watch?v=HkRtn_8iVNk at 3:38, with the soundtrack at half volume.

I've been fortunate to hear that sonic boom several times and it's awesome.

First chute, than nose gear rotation. So what was happening here? too fast.

@halbtonganzton
Late reply, i know.
It's perfectly normal and happens on many landings.
Listen at 0:40
"...for the crosswind DTO we'll be late chute deploy..."
There are 3 different modes of chute deployment.
1. nominal chute: before nose gear touchdown
2. late chute: after nose gear touchdown
3. no chute
It depends on the amount of crosswind while landing.

dude omfg CJ manhandled that "son of a brick with wings" you notice how he waited for nosegear touchdown to deploy the drag shoot..
i want to honestly hear him answer whether it was a lucky landing or whether he had the orbiter under complete control the whole time..
BMXorHOMICIDE 2 years ago
CJ didnt deploy the chute. PLT does it. And of course he had it under control. You either land or crash.

The sonic boom! Is that like when it breaks threw the sound barrier??
henkeblenke1 2 years ago 3
Yes,
as the space shuttle breaks the sound barrier, the sound waves are pushed together. At first, you hear nothing, and then you hear the sonic boom.

How does an aircraft create a pair of sonic booms?

6 missions left. Orbiters are as pristine now as they ever were.
