when he shifted to a new direction after the D Straits era I thought success would slip
away I must admit I made a big mistake the man is much mature now the songs are pearls I heard him in an interview that songs take years to finish & that he's not interested in material success so long MARK
Whey Aye, Man! Is the Local Dialect, I am not a Geordie and I know that, I have an American cousin who thinks that she speaks English better then I do, and I am from York.
haha im from sudnerland and we sometime use the saying "Why aye man", bt we normally just say "Aye" or "Whey aye" bt yer its just northern slang for yes lol
@LP4939 Eh? Why/wey don't you drop Mark Knopfler a line and and pull him up on his writing skills? Oh and by the way, he grew up in Newcastle....
In any case, English is only our second language, so we're not all that bothered about what other people think Geordie expressions should look like in English :-)
@LP4939 its not wey wee wye or any other variation the words are "why aye man" it is a Northern colloquialism specifically from the region of Newcastle upon Tyne used as previosuly stated to mean: yes.
@burnzy1986 Are you a real Geordie though from the ship building era? Newcastle today bears little resemblence to the true Newcastle and things change, the young people from Liverpool sound nothing like the Beatles.
@LivingOutOfTimeBand Well not the ship building era cos a wasnt born then but all my family are, infact my dad is in a book called life on the Tyne and it shows him working on a boat, and its where ive been brought up and still live so yeah im a real Geordie.
@LP4939 - im a geordie too, its why aye man, i can assure you. oh and great song btw, this man is one of my main inspirations, thakns to this song i learned the guitar, and can play quite well now, top stuff!!
I don't know, but I think he will play more of his own songs than of the dire straits tunes. He seemed very comfortable with this relaxed, folky atmosphere.
Absolutely love this tune, the man is talent personified. Once again DogSwede 1 you hone in on the best tunes and a decent format to watch with them, Thanks for the posting, Jim H.P.H.

If Knopfler played a gig incorporating all his truly great songs, it'd last about 4 days.

Cos he born in glasgow doesn't make him a Scot. Half Hungarian, half English.

why are man
NicolaCappaiREGISTA 2 years ago
what does it mean "why aye man"
karlbosilev1 2 years ago
its basically used for "yes" in north east england, for example:
"you coming down the pub later?"
"why aye man!" :)
a few people say it where i come from but its more of a newcastle thing
Adammm1992 2 years ago 9
thanks man
karlbosilev1 2 years ago
@Adammm1992 Like "of course man" kinda? :-)
Manjaa75 1 year ago
@Adammm1992 YES lol
GeordieNewcastle 1 year ago
@Adammm1992 It's more similar to "Alright." In north-west England, people say "Alright mate" as a greeting.
"You coming to the pub later?" "Why aye man" fits, but it can also be "Why aye man" as just a greeting.
"Why aye man!" "Why aye!"
Source: I'm a scot living in NorthWest England. :)
