  • Does anyone know the name of the blonde who says 'i have to leavw cause there's no cheating'?

  • Allen Ludden represented the company quite well here.

  • Why is this called a 'rant'?

  • @3211Victoria Because George Peppard was whining about the pre-cursors he had to go through, and decided to talk about it. NBC, as a private establishment, refused his further services, and decided not to air his grievance. However, he could have put it out anywhere, and the only ones that could stop him were the publishers.

  • which year was it?

  • What a self-centered prima donna!

  • i bet George got a lot of women

  • Would have been better if he was smoking a cigar instead of a cigarette.

  • @ViperComplex And saying "I love it when a plan comes together".

  • Rest in Peace

You will always be remembered as one of the greatest actors!

  • "A class act"? Peppard was well known as an absolute PIG! This rant was nothing more than grandstanding.

And after the HUGE "$64,000 Question" in the 1950's, you could blame them for their caution.

  • Philadelphia, PA

  • did his rant actually air?

  • @rucksplash08 - Yes and no...this episode never aired on NBC, but was seen in reruns on GSN in the 90s and 00s.

  • There were too many lawsuits and scandals over these stupid game shows, so the networks had to be strict about them. No sense getting offended personally about it. But GP was articulate and calm. No biggie.

  • i am surprised this didn't end up on the cutting room floor

  • what happened exactly to make Peppard go off on this rant to begin with?

  • wow amazing that back then they could smoke on tv.

  • 1:40 hillarious what she says "i'll have to leave there is no cheating" lol XD

  • Rant was a bit misplaced and long-winded, but I can understand where he's coming from.

Nevertheless, as stated, game shows had gone through a lot of scrutiny in the past due to fixing, cheating, etc. and they have to have the safeguards in place so that game shows don't wind up going back to the "Twenty One era". It's not much different from things like drug testing for state employees and big-name athletes and such. It isn't that we don't trust YOU, we just have to be fair to everyone.

  • They just shown this again on GSN.

  • does anyone else think george peppard was gay?

  • Just you

  • I like the look Allen Luden gave George Peppard at the end like "Don't screw with me...Buddy.

  • George is soo nice :)

I love him :) Too bad he died :(.

  • Talking about smoking on the game shows; Garry Moore use to puff away all the time on I've Got A Secret. It's no wonder that he died of cancer.

  • Notice how uncomfortable the contestant sitting with Peppard looks. It reminds me of Michael Myers when Kayne West had his tirade.

  • George Peppard was a respectful lovely man who stood up for what he belived in.

this clip is actually staged cos if you watch the other password rant clip on Youtube.George clearly tells Allen ludden he has a complaint.. Password plus rant This is the rant that NBC would not air, go watch!!

  • Comment removed

  • wasnt he always kind of a "ima big movie star, im so special" kind of person?

  • Don't know. I've never met him personally.

  • lol that rant made them take an extra commercial!

  • Smoking was a common thing on TV. Johnny Carson smoked all the time on the Tonite Show, but later on, tried to keep his drags off camera or during breaks. I was in Milwaukee TV production in the 70s and routinely had government officials smoke on public affairs shows we taped.

  • you're so wrong RandomPurpose. George Peppard was a great actor and person.

  • So you worked with him, or are just a big fan? You might be a bit clouded in your thinking..

  • I am just a big fan...

  • I noticed how they came from commercial to do the rant and back into commercial. I wonder if NBC producers there on the scene knew that the rant wouldn't make it to air on the network, so they put the commercial after the rant to allow the network to seamlessly edit without too much of a notice [so it made it seem as if Peppard forgot to say the rant at the end]

  • Allen Ludden was a great man... George Peppard... douche bag!

  • George was a fuckin asswhole. He used to introduce himself to other actors when working with them on a new movie for the first time as "Hello, I am George Peppard, and I am not a nice guy"

  • This is why Allen Ludden is a game show host with class. I will bet you anything that if Bob Barker were hosting this show, he would've given the same response in the same manner.

  • I agree Because what he just said I basically said to my sister who said Game Shows are a croc and I said that "Game Shows are policed by the networks for a reason, and they should do the same for Reality SHows because Reality Shows are just a Big Croc!"

  • Allen had a wonderful response to a delicate situation where he was specific and forceful but also diplomatic and gentle. He should have went into politics. I don't think Allen was upset at all, he knew if things didn't go well the rant would have been cut from the show or even the entire show cut. Would have been great if the other guest was Robert Blake. They both hated NBC executives.

  • good for george!

  • I'm sure George was never a guest on Password again. Allen Ludden had that "If looks could kill" look on his face at the end.

  • No...according to Wikipedia, he wasn't asked to be back on the show.

  • Nice rant, especially when everyone on the set has to put up with George's secondhand smoke.

  • I guess George never heard of the Quiz Show Scandals.

  • George Peppard proabably never heard of anything that didn't involve George Peppard...

  • What was NBC's reason at the time to not air this episode?

  • i never knew about this. But Allen Ludden surely maintained his cool when he mentioned that game shows have to be strictly supervised. Why do you think those quiz shows of the 1950's all went off the air? Because they were rigged, contestants were given answers to the questions in advance, and the networks took away control from the sponsors.

  • I have to say that I think it's fine to have a form. If you aren't going to cheat/lie/steal/etc. then what's the difference?

Allen also kinda looked offended, I mean Password was hid game, his career, and he was like talking bad about the show/network right in front of him. Way to go Allen, you kept your cool and remained a gentleman.

  • Awesome. Way to go George. This episode was censored and never aired, btw.

  • I absolutely admire the way Peppard speaks his mind, regardless of what people think.I've seen a clip of Peppard being interviewed by a TV host here in Britain called Terry Wogan.Peppard simply told Wogan,matter-of-factly,that he didn't like Mr.T because Mr.T had let his ego get the better of him and had tried to have a "charming" British wardrobe lady on the set of A-Team fired. What a fella.

  • holy shit this was ridiculous!

  • Did you see that nasty look Ludden gave Pepard as they were going to break? I guess George forgot about the Quiz Show scandals of the 1950s

  • ....which is why George was never invited back.

  • And, I seriously doubt he gave a damn.

  • And I can see why NBC rejected this episode.

  • I think this was funny. The man (G. Peppard) was just talking. Some of it was legitimately humorous ("you won't cheat, steal, KICK YOUR MOTHER", something he just threw in obviously). People are a bit too sensitive. He didn't get up and start shooting people. He just had a grievance. Whatever.....

  • Easy to judge someone you don't know. Besides, Mr. Peppard is not around anymore to defend himself. I've seen a different Peppard in interviews and also a different Mr. T (Mr. T never retaliated? PLEASE!). Let George rest in peace will you?

  • I'm an atheist, so I know he can't hear me!

  • So am I, but that doesn't mean you have to disrespect those that have passed on.

  • My sincere apologies, missespeppard, I didn't mean to cause offence. I was a little insensitive. I'm sorry. PS. The Netherlands Rock!

  • Smoking on a game show, I love it!

  • Anyone know exactly what year this was filmed?

  • 1979

  • I've always thought George Peppard was a class act. I still do. Allen Ludden was class +1. May they both rest in peace.

Oh, and by the way, Ludden appeared on an episode of Peppard's Banacek (in a rare acting appearance) as a reporter.

  • You're wrong about Peppard being a class act.

  • What exactly was George Peppard complaining about?

  • Simply put, he feels that NBC was being too hard on the show to make sure no cheating occurs.

  • Allen Ludden WAS Password...they may have had other game show greats replace him, but NO ONE could do Password like Allen (even the great Bill Cullen)!

  • Did George Peppard appear on any other game show after this rant?

  • I don't think so

  • Couldn't see the whole show, so don't know the context in which this comment took place, but it could hardly be called a rant. M. Peppard simply voiced an opinion rather politely, with a polite informed rebuttal by M. Ludden. That's what we need more of. It was good TV.

What is disturbing is that NBC(Silverman) didn't like any criticism, and so pulled this entire broadcast AFTER taping 4 more shows; then banned GP as punishment; and never allowed the audience to see and decide for itself.

  • How does rigged shows deny, or abrogate, the provisions of the 1st Amendment?

  • I've read that CBS had a similar form. It's all because of the quiz show scandals of the 50s, where the shows were found to be rigged. The networks are doing everything they can to keep that from happening again, despite the implications from a few poorly-informed YouTube users. And that's my rebuttal.

  • Allen Ludden = class.

  • freedom of speech anyome?

Anyway here in Amsterdam everyone still loves George (HANNIBAL).

Atleast he was genuine...unlike so many other so called other oscar winning (or should i say whining) actors from nowadays..

    Nobody needs a policestate!

  • I love the look on Allen's face. He just let George rant on. Allen Ludden was class all the way.

  • did anyone notice that around :57 mr. peppard is taking a puff of a cigarette? must have been a while since smoking was allowed on a game show set! or maybe it's just me.

  • Yeah, people used to smoke on TV all the time. There was lots of it on the old Match Game...

  • oh yeah!! my bf is a *huge* fan of mg . . . i think charles nelson reilly did the lion's share of smoking on set . . . just now i can picture him w/one of his famous pipes looking all serious and stuff . . . :)

  • There was often a curlicue of smoke coming up from Richard Dawson's general vicinity too... and Marcia Wallace got caught by the camera taking a big drag on a butt. But like I said, everybody did it in those days.

  • @slobone So did Brett, Elaine Joyce, Ed Asner & Scoey Mitchll, but Brett also announced in 1977 that she stopped smoking as well!

  • This is the first time I have seen the beautiful face of Alan Luddin for something like 30 years now. He WAS very knowleadgeable about what he was doing and was seldom, if ever, thrown for a loop. I'll bet he has passed too.... :(

  • yes, he died in like 1980 & was succeded by bill cullen & tom kennedy.

  • Allen Ludden died June 9, 1981, to be exact. If he was still living today, chances are CBS would've asked him to do Million Dollar Password instead of Regis.

  • Actually, Bill Cullen took his place for four weeks in 1980, Allen came back, and when he couldn't do the show anymore, his good friend Tom Kenned did indeed succeed him as host of the show with Betty White's blessing.

  • If George Peppard had a problem with the scrutiny of game shows, he should have stayed away from them, and I think he did for the most part. George did have a point though. Allen Ludden used to routinely treat the celebs like they were criminals when they didn't follow the rules to the letter.

  • What a load of nonsense. The game show host handled that smug twat Peppard with some dignity.

  • what a guy. he was WAY ahead of his time. george peppard you are TRULY MISSED ... !!!!

  • SOOOO TRUE

  • GP obviously had no sense of history. He completely forgot the game show scandal of the 50's. Of course they had to sign a form to protect the network and the integrity of the show and the industry. Ludden handled him with grace. I bet GP was never invited back.

  • He indeed was never invited back after this incident...

  • Are there more vid like this one?

    George The Best!!!

  • Can anybody tell me what this is all about.

  • Which part? The rant or the other stuff in the comments?

  • Surely one refers to the other asshole.

  • it's about what George (the man sitting down) says it's about in the first couple sentences. he says they are a tad ridiculous in their attempt to keep things on the up-and-up.

  • That was awsome! George is missed I am sure.

  • what courage. what a great man.

  • he was so cool but im not happy that george died i was 6 years old. He died too fast

  • i loved him in the A-TEAM

  • I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

  • Read Betty's biography, why don't you? You might find out that she loved Allen Ludden very much. she mentions more than a few times in her book that he passed away well before his time and that had it not been for the cancer, he would likely still be alive today (and probably still hosting game shows...imagine him on Millionaire!)

  • Ah, Betty loved her husband. Let's get out a special edition!

  • I always heard that Peppard was notorious for being very rude (to put it politely) and this just seals it.

  • This episode was on GSN last saturday (7/8/07)

  • Look at the rage in Ludden's eyes when he shoots a look to Peppard as the music starts at the end. To hear what went on during the break!

  • Here's the thing...if George Peppard didn't want to be on the show, then he shouldn't have done the show. Allen Ludden definitely was a class act, and he reacted very well to this tempest in a teapot.

  • Funny video

Damn he looks sexy!!!I like that shirt *blush*

He was amazing in The A-Team i just love that show.

What a shame hes not around us anymore. WE MISS YA!

    R.I.P beautiful

  • Not the only time he was candid like that either.

  • he told then nicely where to go.

  • I thought he was being tongue-in-cheek at first. Apparently he didn't know the history behind why there were so many strictures.

  • Exactly. He had obviously not heard about the quiz show scandal of the 50s. The most infamous one from that era, "Twenty One", aired on NBC, so it's too bad he wasn't notified of this.

  • Man, Allen Ludden is a class act. Wonderful man, and he very excellently (and politely, and basically indirectly) rebutted the argument made by Peppard. God rest Allen Ludden's soul--he left us much too early.

  • Man, Allen Ludden is a class act. Wonderful man, and he very excellently (and politely, and basically indirectly) rebutted the argument made by Peppard. God rest Allen Ludden's soul--he left us much too early.

  • damn u could smoke on a gameshow

  • Yep...plenty of celebs on the 70s Match Game were known to smoke on the set (Brett Somers, Richard Dawson, et al.), and Jack Barry was known to take drags on The Joker's Wild while the contestants were being introduced (b/c it was the only occasion he had enough time to take a hit and let the air clear).

  • George Peppard is good on The A Team and he a good man. :)

  • George Peppard died 1994 He was a very good Actor did great in his older movies and of course the A-Team

  • I love it when a plan comes together!

  • Crazy foo Hannibal gon' get us all KILLED!

  • Funny!

  • How funny smoking killed him and he can't even go on a game show without subjecting everyone in the studio to his smoke. I always knoew he was a pompous ass, this only confirms it!

  • If you don't want to abide by the rules of a game show, don't sign the contract to appear on it. Allen Ludden handled that very well. A big raspberry to George Peppard.

  • i like his style pal. He say it serouisly and that is he. He's george peppard with no alcohol and sigars not hannibal smith

  • I wish to complain about game shows that have celebrities teamed up with non-celebrities. If the celebrity isn't a good player, the contestant gets screwed out of big bucks! I'd be pretty aggravated if I have 9 words right in Alphabetics and my celebrity partner utters an illegal clue on the 10th and I lose the $5000. I've seen this sort of thing happen on Pyramid.

  • Wouldn't have been so bad on P+, since they would've just deducted $1K from the total.

  • I rememebr him being interviewed on TV-AM around 1991 and he seemed much happier then. He said he was lucky to be alive and very thankful but that he had pissed aways most of his life through booze. But gameshow contracts are alot worse today. I really feel sorry for those UK Blind Date contestants

  • go george fiesty and funny bless him!

  • rip allen ludden

  • watch him smoking that cigarette

  • George was quite serious. On his first meeting with Dwight Schultz he purportledly said,"I am movie star and I am not a nice man"

  • why are people writing comments in here about George in the present tense? He's deader than his career was at this time!

  • In fairness to George, he did this before ep before he did the A-Team, so his career was far from being in the dumper. That being said, he didn't help himself at all with that rant, and Mr. Ludden handled that with class and dignity.

  • Actually, his feature film career was pretty much over by this point. Just a year later, his difficult behavior got him fired from the TV series Dynasty (he was the original Blake Carrington).

  • Ludden probably went ballistic after that. That show was his baby, his daddy, and he mammay all at once. God damn that Herb Stempel.

  • God BLESS Herb Stempel. He took the first step toward making game shows honest.

  • No he didn't, he took the first step towards making others make game shows more stupid. That loudmouth nebbish wasn't worth a damn then and still isn't now. Tic-Tac-Dough is honest alright.... it's also able to be played by a chimpanzee.

  • If you've ever seen a TTD contestant exam, you'd be surprised by the questions...nothing a chimp could handle, that's for sure!

  • I can see why they didn't air this episode when it was originally supposed to air.

  • Who the hell does George Peppard think he is? Nobody asked him to lose his pathetic career and do the game show circuit. If he doesn't want to play by the rules (and ensure that we don't go back to the days of rigged shows...which is where we are with reality tv and the like these days), then he can just take his Greenwich Village shirt and leave.

  • This must have aired recently.

  • not bad, George. Where did you get that t-shirt?

  • wow...Go George!

  • Nice shirt, George. LOL

  • Surely Allen didn't know what George was going to say. I think they decided to not air the whole episode because Peppard's rant took too long, and it would've been too much to edit out. It's also obvious that the rant upset Allen, and perhaps they felt the mood was a little too tense.

To my knowledge, Peppard was the ONLY PW+ celeb (maybe the ONLY celeb in ALL the Password versions) to smoke on camera.
