As a kid in the 50s, I loved Dolph Schayes. He was a great player and somehow, I knew he was a great guy, too. I remember a game on TV when he passed the ball and accidentally threw it right into the back of a referee's head! He immediately started apologizing but the ref called a foul on him anyway. I remember thinking "Doesn't that ref know Dolph Schayes is a really nice guy? He'd never throw the ball at a ref on purpose!" 50+ years ago . . . it's funny the things that you remember.
Dolph Schayes was the first modern pro forward. At 6'8" he could play inside and rebound, yet had a great perimeter shot and could take his man off the dribble.
People can debate "best" all day long, but "first" is a unique honor for a special few.

I got to see Dolph many times in my hometown of Syracuse. Dolph, Al Cervi & Billy Gabor were
my favorites. They were all great players.
