Philosopher Gadamer talked about three sides of art: the symbol, the game and the festival. In this performance I think everything is beautifully tackled.
What's all the fuss about Dessay here? Who cares? O.o The moment Hallenberg opens her mouth, you get to hear what real art and style and class is. She blows 'em all away. :)
What is so plain to see is the joy and energy that Emmanuelle Haim brings to her band and singers.......and why not!!!........this is in the music and it's so energizing to view.........beautiful!!!
I love this quartet and based on this video I have bought the CD which is very enjoyable. But watching this I am left with a couple of impressions. One is that Dessay seems to not want to be a part of the group, i.e., running in late and leaving early. The other is that Hallenberg and Prina seem to be having a really good time!
I wasn't at the recording session, but I would bet my house on the fact that they all devised this little playlet and gave themselves roles and attitudes to play for their own ( and the audience's ) amusement. It's called singing and acting. Dessay is playing the part of the unprepared, rushed diva who wants to appear that she's not quite sure of what she's doing, right before she blows them away with her coloratura. The rest are doing whatever else amuses them.
but...couldn't they be doind a metaphor of what they represetent? Since dessay is belezza (beauty, am I right?) she is inconstant and always running from us humans but very present in some moments when it does blow us away...and other analysis to the other actors/singers...
I am quite impressed by Ms. Hallenberg. I think she was an excellent choice to replace Cecilia Bartoli for this role. I have this recording and love her interpretation of Lascia la spina, which comes right after this song on the CD.
I play violin and also the viola. I believe baroque music is the real essence of all music. In baroque music i find all sorts of emotions .. gracefullness, happiness, peacefulness, anger etc etc.
Thankyou for sharing this music i wish i could get in contact with you to share this passion.
You know what I'm interested in doing... Performing Beethovens' 'Symphony no. 9 in D Minor op. 125' with Natalie Dessay on Saprano, and Sofia Prina on Contralto.
I much prefer the version with Nathalie Stutzmann, a truer, richer contralto than Miss Prina, who is a Mezzo trying to pass as a Contralto. She bottoms out all the time. The Mezzo Hallenberg is phenominal however and the best singer in this quartet. Dessay is great, but I'm not convinced of her baroque.
she's a kinda diva anyway... i love her voice but the fake run "i'm diva and i'm late" it's just a for the video... Her voice is like a spell to our ears anyway
Bach has his strong points as does Handel. They also have areas where they are not as strong. Bach is not God, nor his Handel, they were hard working men with incredible talent.
This is another example the Handel's ability to write a quartet with each part defining the character, well before Mozart. Amazing music. There is nothing in Bach Like this.
I got the impression that Bach could write music with a frying pan smaching squeekey toys back to people who chucked them at him. This came to me while listening to "the Bach Album" which was from the mid 1990s. Handel seems more interesting to listen to a lot of the time , but as far as just a stoned natural musician Bach had Handel beat. I don't know anything about music.I own more Handel music, but it seems Bach may be one chair closer to God.
I also love the way this piece is performed by this group. There is so much excitment and energy in it that I had to buy the CD. It is available on the Virgin Classics label.
I don't think that this is from a DVD. I heard that a friend of Natalie Dessay made these videos, probably to promote the CD.
Wonderful performance and voices, I often remember this melody in my mind. I love the way they sing: I mean, their energy, happiness and strenght of the pure baroque music.
