What's also interesting about this clip is how 'healthy' Grable looks. She is full of curves with even a hit of double chin. Yet, doesn't she look gorgeous? Compare standards of beauty in the '40s to those today. Grable would be classed as too fat and she'd have to be a lot more skinny and bony to pass muster as a 'pin up' now! How times have changed. For the better...?
@Dianaemanuel You sure are right! I too think the standards of beauty in the 1940s is way better than the skinny, hard bodied looks of today! And I bet you there were not nearly as many problems back then with eating disorders!
Betty Grable was so beautiful and so talented and had gorgeous Gams. A true legend talented in acting and singing and the first army pinup girl ever and the biggest star of her time.
@honeybee7700 The first army pinup girl ever was actually the beautiful Gladys Cooper thirty years prior to Betty Grable who was a great star but among the greatest, not THE greatest of her time. How old are you?
The lighting and makeup here, and the use of black in both the backdrop and smashing gown, are notable. Betty always had a double chin and it was lit very carefully obsure it. She had an All American girl face and wisely in her films that was highlighted with little attempt at making her some sort of hothouse glamourpuss. She was from St. Louis (daughter of the building contractor Con Grable) and so she was always down-to-earth and direct and very self-confident.
Joni James did perhaps the greatest recording of this song in her album of Jerome Kern and Harry Warren songs. Joni was honored to record another famous Betty Grable song, "I Can't Begin To Tell," too. Betty never thought of herself as much of a singer, but as anyone can hear here she had a lovely voice, expressive phrasing and knew how to act a story from the lyrics.
An inexplicably forgotten song by Harry Warren & Mack Gordon. And Betty at her most gorgeous! A classic look -she could have stepped out of a 2010 fashion magazine.
