PLease go to page 3 of the book and read the first paragraph under Swords & Sorcery, "Lemuria is a post-apocalyptic world of half a million years into the future..."
@DBezio OK. Wasn't the review that was wrong it was the author. The Thongor books take place in the past, but Simon must have decided to futz it a bit.
Great review, Grubman! I love BoL! I run an online BoL Conan game. I wish I could make my YouTube vids as cool as you do yours. You should give me some tips one day, lol. I love how you were able to show different parts of the game book and was able to have the camera scroll down pages and stuff. I have no idea how to do that.
@daddystabz Glad you enjoyed it :). Naturally I don't want everyones videos to look exactly like mine...but the way you do that stuff is with your editing software. I'm using Imovies.
Hey that was awesome, I love the breakdown of different systems (because it saves me the time of scouring the book for base mechanics haha) so thank you for that, also you did a very nice job of making it entertaining as well! Awesome vid, thanks
Shout out: Dave, just picked up Wild West Cinema. It's great! Artwork could be better, sure, but the material flat out rocks. And I don't even like that genre. But what you did, you did brilliantly!
@DeepEndOfTheDicePool Thank you very much :)! It doesn’t get a lot of notice, , but those who find it seem to like it a lot. Many of the ideas are inspired by other games. The core die mechanic was inspired by the Fudge RPG system, the “GM doesn’t roll” idea was inspired by Cinematic Unisystem, Motivations were inspired by Hollow Earth Expeditions, and Classes were inspired by Simon Washbourns Go Fer Yer Gun, …put all that in a blender with a scoop of my own ideas and this was the result.
Hi. New subscriber. I loved BoL on reading. I also imagine playing must be a blast. But it's so rules light that it seems you are going to have a lot of character overlap. I tried to create a group of merc PCs for a one shot and they were all rather similar. Thus seems BoL is awesome for small groups and short runs but maybe less so for long campaigns.
Well they would be similar if you created a group of all mercs. It depends what your definition of a "merc" is and why you want your pcs all to be mercs. That would be the same in any system you used. However, it depends what you mean by all mercs. The sample characters in the back of the rulebook could all be considered mercs. They aren't that similar are they?
@SimonWashbourne Mr. Washbourne, thank you so much for responding to my comments. First, please know that your game is utterly brilliant. I own TWO copies plus a pdf and I tell every gamer I know about BoL as a way to expose them to small press and, for that matter, S&S. So my quibbles are just that, quibbles. But I do think the light elegance of the rules necessitates that characters of similar backgrounds will overlap more than in a crunchier system.
@SimonWashbourne I think by its nature, rules light precludes niche protection and limits differentiation. So if you have two burly barbarian swordsmen in BoL, they are going to be more similar (in stats and in play style) than, say, in something like 3.5, Pathfinder or GURPS (all of which, I should note, are way too crunchy for me to bother with at this stage of my life). I any event, I'll play BoL over any of these, every time. Thanks for the amazing game. Supers & Dogs of War also rock. :)
@smartrocker14 It’s unlikely. I’m not, personally, a big fan of the Fate system. For pulp we’ve used other systems like Hollow Earth Expeditions and BRP. I’m planning to stick to games I know well, generally like, and have an opinion on that I’m willing to stand behind. Right now, my plan (..Mice and Men and all that) is to stick with smaller press games that are getting less exposure than I think they deserve.
Yay! Another BOL Review! :) Simon wrote a great game. I even got my name in the beginning of it for helping him with some ideas. I love the Careers as broad skills (and as a quick background story), and the magic system is a lot of fun.
Future? By future, you mean past, right?

@DBezio It's not the parts, it's how you put them together. Great job.

Would you ever consider doing a Spirit of the Century review? I know it's an old game, but it would be nice to see your take on it.

@DBezio How about Weird West? That looks interesting, and it's small press, AND I don't know much about it.

@smartrocker14 Possible. I'll check it out. Of course, I'd have to play it first.
