The only way a .22 is better than high powered rifle such as a .30 06 is that the .22 is more suited for small game hunting where if you shoot a squirrel or rabbit with with a .30 06, there will be no meat left because the animal has been blown inside out, but as far as a .22 being superior than a .30 06 in power... well don't be silly.

Most enthusiast know that if you shoot a squirrel with 180gr bullet at roughly 3,000 ft pounds, there won't be much left of the meat, and thats where the little .22 round becomes ideal. Your are also right about the size and weight of the bullet... A bigger and heavier bullet is more potent than a lighter bullet coming from the same size casing and powder charge.

LMFAO U guys crack me up! a 22LR 40gr lead bullet will barely penetrate 10" of ballistic gelatin. It will not penetrate hard objects such as cars or bone. U could be shot thru the heart with a 22 and not bleed out for over an hour. U also could be shot in the head and u will not die, unless it hits ur temple or goes thru an eye socket. 30-06 is an armor piercer. Especially with the right bullet. If u get hit with a chest shot, u will bleed out before EMTs get there, if u survive the intial hit.
A .22 will do the same as a .223. The nose will slow while the back keeps going causing it to tumble inside you bouncing off your rib cage and breaking to bits as it shreds everything in your chest. A .22 is just as deadly as anything else. Granted it doesn't have the knock down power of the .06 it'll still kill.
The classic .223 tumble that you are refering to isn't because the tail of the round travels over the nose. The bullet tumble that was reported in the M-16 was actually becuse the round had too much yaw. The tip kept on a centerline but the tail would move off the centerline in a circular motion as the round traveled in the air. The result was the famous "meat cleaver" effect. While this had very desirable results on flesh and bone there were several serious drawbacks to this design.
Accuracy over long ranges, and penetration were greatly reduced. Simple things like hitting the butt of an enemies rifle would cause the round to deflect wildly. To combat this they reduced the number of twists in the M-16. The instability that created the "meat cleaver" effect was almost completely removed. The round is still highly effective, but no longer 'tumbles' as it flies through the air or after it hits it's target.

Four reasons. The rounds do not over penetrate as much as larger caliber rounds. The 5.56mm is much lighter so you can carry more than 2 times as much ammo. Battle range was determined to be only about 300 meters, it's not necessary to have a weapon that fires 700 meters. Recoil isn't such a pain in the ass. Fire a 30-06 100 times in a row and you feel beat up. Fire an M-16 all day and feel great!

During the phillipine insurrection our men took abnormal amounts of casualties due to Paul Mauser creating the M1898 rifle later to become the Kar98 then the K98k. Anyway, our 30-40 Krags were outdated and we began looking for a new rifle/cartridge to replace them. We bought the rights to the '98 mauser design.
2/2 We then built the 1903 springfield and created a cartridge called the 30-03 which ended up reproducing 30-40 Krag specs. Germany introdoced the first lightweight high velocity loading in the world in 8mm, 149gr spitzer just before we adopted the M1903. So we applied the spitzer design to the 30-03 changed neck and shoulder measurements and topped it with a 150gr bullet and the 30-06 was born. 30/06 and 8mm are almost identical trajectory wise and Germany changed to 196gr bullets before WWI.

Hmmh well I have seen what happens to a deer hit with a 203 grain 7.62x54R SP fired from the Mosin-Nagant M-44 carbine. The result was quite impressive it was like lightning hit that buck because it knocked him down , and it didn't get back up.
without my glasses and a well zeroed scope i can hit sumtin out to 500 yds with a .22. with my glasses on i can shoot stuff about 700 yds away. :D ill post a vid of it.
I don't care how good your glasses, rifle, scope, or ammo are--there is no way a low velocity round like a .22 caliber could be accurate at 500-700 yards. If you do post a video, then put proof of the distance in it.
I believe it's very doable. In fact, I believe a .22 can be accurate at far greater distances that 700 yards. I've seen 1500 yard shots made with precision accuracy, using only .22 long rifle shots. In fact, there are many competitions around the world where it's done on a regular basis.
It is hard to find a decent run of the mill SMLE for under $350 these days, and the No5s are comparitively rare in Australia. I suppose the question is, are you happy to hand over $550 to get your hands on one of the most fun weapons you can find! Of course, I'm biased!

Once, back in 1989, we did a gun shoot with the Venezualans Navy and their big guns, and they were shooting at our sled we were dragging from about eight miles.
First, we see the muzzle blast, then, the splashdown of the (80lb) projectile, then sonic boom, then impact noise, finally muzzle blast.
Not sure exactly - I shoot at these with a 7mm Rem Mag and I get sore a long time before the targets do... ;)
It'll depend on your round, but it's in the neighborhood of hundreds or thousands of rounds. It's like digging out of jail with an ice pick - you'll get out... eventually. ;)

The bullet tumble that was reported in the M-16 was actually becuse the round had too much yaw. The tip kept on a centerline but the tail would move off the centerline in a circular motion as the round traveled in the air. The result was the famous "meat cleaver" effect. While this had very desirable results on flesh and bone there were several serious drawbacks to this design.

Accuracy over long ranges, and penetration were greatly reduced. Simple things like hitting the butt of an enemies rifle would cause the round to deflect wildly. To combat this they reduced the number of twists in the M-16. The instability that created the "meat cleaver" effect was almost completely removed. The round is still highly effective, but no longer 'tumbles' as it flies through the air or after it hits it's target.

oh wow. didn't know that. I knew they started to put a teflon coating on them to help them penetrate body armor and stuff. which makes them pass right through and the target often doesn't know he's been hit till later. and why did we go away from the 30.06 and the .308?

Four reasons. The rounds do not over penetrate as much as larger caliber rounds. The 5.56mm is much lighter so you can carry more than 2 times as much ammo. Battle range was determined to be only about 300 meters, it's not necessary to have a weapon that fires 700 meters. Recoil isn't such a pain in the ass. Fire a 30-06 100 times in a row and you feel beat up. Fire an M-16 all day and feel great!

1/2 Some one said 8x57 is better than 30/06? Actually 30-06 is closely based off the 8mm mauser. During the phillipine insurrection our men took abnormal amounts of casualties due to Paul Mauser creating the M1898 rifle later to become the Kar98 then the K98k. Anyway, our 30-40 Krags were outdated and we began looking for a new rifle/cartridge to replace them. We bought the rights to the '98 mauser design.

2/2 We then built the 1903 springfield and created a cartridge called the 30-03 which ended up reproducing 30-40 Krag specs. Germany introdoced the first lightweight high velocity loading in the world in 8mm, 149gr spitzer just before we adopted the M1903. So we applied the spitzer design to the 30-03 changed neck and shoulder measurements and topped it with a 150gr bullet and the 30-06 was born. 30/06 and 8mm are almost identical trajectory wise and Germany changed to 196gr bullets before WWI.

Sure. But we all no the 7.92x57mm is better than a .22 and a 30-06:) I'm not saying a 30-06 isn't good but I think it is overrated and too many people think its the best. I'll take my mausers up aganst a 30-06 any day. I still want a M1903 though.

It's not overrated. It's been around longer than most rifle calibers being used today. There are better faster, accurate calibers these days. It's not because the 30-06 is overrated. Technology and time has caught up to it. How do you expect something being the best forever?
Overrated applies to something that it's totally hyped up and not lives to it. That is not the case with the 30-06. Don't get me wrong, every one is entitled to their own opinion.

Please put down the bottle. The 30-06 carries so much velocity, I use 3 inch thick steel plates and it snaps them in half (armor peircing). Hell the 30-06 goes straight through kelvar.

seriously raptor are you serious. someone tell me if im wrong but ive shot both calibers and a .22 is a light round with little powder. yeah its a relatively fast round but has no inertia due to low mass so it doesnt have the range a large caliber does.

The effective precision range for 30-06 is around 850 to 900 yards area effect range (in Squad Automatic Weapon use is 1000 yards .22 effective range period is 300 yards...

Hmmh well I have seen what happens to a deer hit with a 203 grain 7.62x54R SP fired from the Mosin-Nagant M-44 carbine. The result was quite impressive it was like lightning hit that buck because it knocked him down , and it didn't get back up.

He puts 2 rounds into a gallon jug of water at 100 yards and the impact is so small he thinks he's missed.
We switch to the 30'06, hitting a gallon jug of water at 125 yards.

I don't care how good your glasses, rifle, scope, or ammo are--there is no way a low velocity round like a .22 caliber could be accurate at 500-700 yards. If you do post a video, then put proof of the distance in it.

I believe it's very doable. In fact, I believe a .22 can be accurate at far greater distances that 700 yards. I've seen 1500 yard shots made with precision accuracy, using only .22 long rifle shots. In fact, there are many competitions around the world where it's done on a regular basis.

First, we see the muzzle blast, then, the splashdown of the (80lb) projectile, then sonic boom, then impact noise, finally muzzle blast.

It'll depend on your round, but it's in the neighborhood of hundreds or thousands of rounds. It's like digging out of jail with an ice pick - you'll get out... eventually. ;)
