Trust me, I have almost been there my self on June 17, 2010. But I had technology blinders on. I have several years is chasing/spotting under my belt and this storm is, in my opinion, worse than a nighttime tornado. A massive daytime HP supercell sucks. I preach safety as well. I have a lot of freshman chasers that ask me a lot of questions, yet I got caught in a situation which could have turned out much worse. Now I use it as an example in what I pass down.
Miscalculation? You had plenty of time to turn the car around and retreat, had you chosen to do so. But you chose to stay there and you got your money shot. Lincoln34C is spot on about you.
@tchaser58 My car*was* turned around and wasn't even facing the tornado. I had just driven two miles south away fro the tornado and thought I had cleared it's path. I was in light rain with good visibility when all of a sudden conditions changed. There was no time to escape. I was acting as a county storm spotter --not a storm chaser or media whore. There was no "money shot" here. The in-car dash cam just happened to catch video while I had my face planted in the passenger seat.
What make me a nut job? I don't threaten anyone. I simply report bad behavior when I see it. As *you* should. In Tuesday's case I didn't catch that the storm had turned right. Had I been just one mile farther south I would have been fine. I wasn't chasing the tornado nor was it chasing me. I was parked. I thought I was out of the path. I miscalculated. Big difference in being overtaken by a storm and TIV driving down a highway on the wrong side of the road and passing on a hilly road.
the reason your car did not get blown away is because your titanium balls weighed it down
