Yeah, great film. Jackson's most enjoyable, for my money.

Speaking of money, you can see where it kicks in: the first half of the film was shot for almost nothing; then you get aliens, the house, explosions... low-grade but funny and effective.

My vague memory is that the in the end, the Film Commission stumped up NZ$300,000. Still a tiny budget, and most of it went in post-production. Worth every cent :)

@CurryCamel I'm fairly sure the shooting had almost wrapped at that point; the money from the New Zealand film board was to get 35mm cinematic prints made (which costs an incredible amount of money), other general distribution costs, and for publicity and promotion; they sent the film off to Cannes, for example. It may have also helped secure some decent gear to edit and mix the sound on; but all the effects work was done on a shoestring.
