After watching this, did the police send Lelouch a ticket home for what he did at 5:19? I read somewhere he had trouble after the original C'Etait... even though it was impossible to see who was driving the Mercedes/Ferrari, unlike here.
CL : « Here i drived fully speed, i couldn’t honk because my wife could have hear it and it was our signal for her to climb the stairs. Here i speeded up also, then i drifted in the turn… there was the same ambience, the same light it’s incredible !!!.... here I honked. It’s the same light !. I get out of the car, and I run like that... hop hop hop hop... and it happens here »
CL « and I have the same ambience light ! that is amazing… »… « so Here I really speed up because I needed to catch up for lost time… »
Traduction Part 8 :
J « Here your were really anxious because the detour from the original course made you lose 3-4 minutes »
CL « I was really anxious for the film… Here i climbed the road and i was praying not to have any car in the middle of the road… because the film could have ended here cause i had no other possibility than stopped… »
CL : « it’s like a disease, it’s not that i’m late… I am always in advance. »
J : « and there you were supposed to turn right »
CL : « I was supposed to turn right but there was a Truck… look it is here! It’s amazing… and then i told myself what if i don’t have anymore roll (film ?) »
J : « it’s amazing, 30 years after there’s always the truck in the middle of the road. »
CL « the value of this movie is to relate a story, if there is not this guy who get out of the car, and who is me from behind, and who meet this woman, it has no sense, it’s a gratuitous act… Which is greatfull in making movie it’s when you relate something, when you give a point of vue. A guy who is late for a rendez-vous can take unnecessary risks not to let the woman wait…"
J : « and you, you are never late for a meeting ? »
CL : « I couldn’t stop because it was the point of the movie »
J : « How do you proceed with the soundtrack ? »
CL : « I did the same course but with a Ferrari, because i wanted the driver’s fans to feel the engine power and the gear shift. »
J « Was it real that the original movie title was « feu rouge » ?
CL : « No it was not. There are many legends around this movie. The original title was « pour un rendez-vous » ( ??? thought it was « c’était un rendez-vous »)
CL « here i use a caution, because it was the only section without visibility. It was the gates of the Louvre. Everywhere before i had visibility, I mean if anything went wrong i would have crashed myself. But here i couldn’t see what was coming from the right or the left, so i asked my assistant Eli Chouraki (Journalist says « at the crossroads of Rue de Rivoli ») to stay there with a walkie talkie and to let me know if i couldn’t pass through the crossroads…
Cl « first because, we decide to make the movie at the real last minute, and then because i wanted do it myself ! I mean, the point was to do it by myself, it was the only point ! »
J : « So we need to unveil all the mysteries around this movie : who drived the car ? I heard that it was Jackie Icks, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Jean ragnotti, Jacques Lafitte… but it was just you ? »
CL « It was me. I just do not prouv it to you ? »
J : « Why didn’t you employ a Professional driver ? You have taken unnecessary risks ? »
But obviously I was ready to give up if i had been in front of an extrem danger… I wouldn’t hesitate between anyone’s life and just a movie. But i really didn’t feel any danger from my point of vue »
Traduction Part 4 :
CL « and here we did around 100mph, just here. I pushed the car to its limits in this section »
CL « We decide to shoot the movie during the night… »
J : « Really, there were no premeditation ? »
CL « absolutly not. I just told my cinematographer, and my engineer to meet me at « porte dauphine » to make this movie. There was Jacques Lefrançois et Henri Quérol in the car, we were 3. Plus i told them that we will do only 1 shoot ! it may or may not Works. Let’s see if the gods of cinema will be with us or not.
J : « Ok, ok I take your word. I watched the movie afew times, so no need to do the remake ! »… « The fact that it was very early in the morning is a part of your character ? The real Lelouche who wakes up every morning at 5am ? »
CL « that is because you have the feeling that the world is yours, I mean, look around, Paris is ours ! »
CL : « here we are… it’s here. I started very fast here »
J : « It doesn’t work like before »
CL « No it doesn’t . The brakes are not the same… here i speed euh… (while the journalist do the pussy !) No, definitly, it doesn’t curb like before… here I started to speed up, and we did 120mph. But today I can’t run that car so fast… »
J : « Ok, ok no need to try » (Pussy !!) (They both laughing) « we just had our today sensation » (Pussy again)
Claude Lelouche: "I get out of the car, and I run like that... hop hop hop hop... and it happens here"
Journalist: "do you recognize it"
CL: "yes, it's the same... it's the one"..........."So we put the camera here, and we had a little remote to control the aperture. The Focus was preset to get the maximum depth. We were 3 in the car and we were over-protected. It (the car) had the same color. indeed, it was my personal car. I recognize it… it isn't outdated, isn't it?"
This video interview is all about Claude Lelouche's fantastic 1976 short film "C'était un rendez-vous". A car drives at high speed through Paris, re-enacted here. Snow Patrol have chosen the film for their Eyes Wide Open video.
Haha le journaliste est une bonne baltringue, il m'a bien fait rire.
