They should bring back the GAA games between Ireland vs America.. Last time was back in 1932, after all America is the second biggest place in the world for Gaelic football and hurling.. Enough of this 'compromised rules' craic between Australia and Scotland.. It'd be cool to play some proper international matches with the US.. Just a thought..
@Aido176 in fairness , its a unknown sport over ther really. . . and i wouldn imagine they have people that have played all their life to teach them?!? what can you expect really? great to see the game growing :)
This game has progressed so much just in a year here, I played a game with a bunch of cal/stanford/SF Rovers guys on Treasure island, what a difference a year makes.
i dont understand how more americans dont know about hurling. its been here since the irish have been and there are strong bases all over the country. we really need to start some sort of all out promotion campaign.
Broadcasting rights. Mainstream TV channels can't show it live because Setanta Sports have the overseas rights. Setanta only shows it on pay-per-view - Joe Sixpack is never going to run across hurling when channel hopping. If the game could be shown on tape delay on regular TV with an American-specific production team explaining what the game is, that'd help it to explode. In the meantime we'll have to settle for word of mouth in the colleges and youth leagues.
Nobody gets flown in to play these games. There's three Irish lads on the field here, but only because they're staff or students at the universities. All the others are just learning the game.
good stuff, hurling always gets a serious reaction from people in other countries. Personally I think it could be a huge game in cricket playing nations like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh but there is nobody to promote the game in these countries
There probably are people in those countries that would be able to make a push for it, but the only things lacking are a supply line for equipment and the belief that hurling can flourish on non-Irish soil. Hopefully more videos like this will change peoples' minds.
im from ireland and ive been playing hurling all my life, im now 18. its good to see hurling expanding in america, very physical game especialy here in ireland
That is outstanding! Any advice on how for someone interested in a start-up in Seattle? I recently joined the Seattle Gaels and am seriously thrilled that the sport is advancing like it is. As a matter of fact the "Cal" jersey is extremely similar to the Seattle jersey, with the exception of being green and having a faded Space needle instead of the Golden Gate bridge. That is a good idea for publicity, I hadn't thought of that. I must admit I am jealous of the facilities in San Fran!
I see they are wearing the GAA and Eire logo, are these collegiate teams legit GAA registered clubs? Also why wouldn't Stanford play at Páirc Na nOg in San Francisco? Would be much better than this cramped field with oversized goals
They are legit clubs, registered with a special GAA-sanctioned board that has been set up to run college games. The jerseys were borrowed from other clubs just for this game while they wait for their own jerseys to arrive. Next game will be at Páirc na nGael. It's good to play some games on campus where students can easily come out and see the game, as well as exposing the game to passing foot traffic and people on neighbouring fields.
its great to see that hurling is growing in america. although i have to say that field is ridiculously small. its hard to capture the speed of the game when the players don't have the space to move around.
Keep on it! I am with the hurling club in Indianapolis, IN...95% of us are American and pushing 30+. The future of hurling in the states is with you....We also have teams at Indiana University and Purdue here in Indiana. Keep encouraging other colleges and each other to play this game with good sportmanship and skill....almost be evangelical about it. This is true grass roots growth for the best game in the world. Up hurlin'!!!
Certainly the best sport in the world, and I would hate it to be ruined by professionalism. It is taking hold all over the world, and I like it's slow but steady progress.
It's wierd how such a positive term (professionalism) can be so negative. It's due to be eclipsed by the amateurism demonstrated in GAA. I don't mind scholarships given to players as long as the game doesn't change itself. I suppose it has changed over time though. It's not untouched. Were there frees awarded amongst the Fir Bolg?
do any of them have grips on there hurls
