One reason that they must all be fakes is that when you die that's it. Your brain is a vital component in your continued existence as a personality with memories and an ability to communicate. When you die it stops working and falls to bits. The idea of an afterlife is just stupidity based on pre-historic superstition.
Oh, what do I hear wafting out of the bullshit...
"you can't prove that"
Yes I can. I'll chop your head off and you try using a medium to tell me what kind of axe I used.
@chrisofnottingham But I think it's not that you can go to someone and tell him: "Dude, your theory is nonsense! Mine is true!" That could crush them and destroy their belief system. Imagine someone would go to you and tell you you're adopted. That is one of crucial moments in lifes of people. But this can be verified. But mediums can make you feel comfortable, and I think they deserve credit for that. I don't believe in mediums either, but you could say Ignorance is bliss.
@chrisofnottingham That is true. I personally also seek the truth rather than comfort. I once thought I'd become a medium (knowing I am fake, but making money of stupidity seemed like a fair idea at the time), but then again, I could become a shut-eye. I tend to think what are my priorities, what is my belief system. I am a christian, who would like to learn the truth in all aspects, it seems to me like it is good to believe something, if it gives you comfort. I personally don't do it, but well.
@chrisofnottingham dude you're getting a bit extreme with the skepticism. I agree with you that the Christians and Muslims may be quite off from reality, and also I quite strongly disagree with your idea that we die when our body dies.
Not claiming I have any proof, just like you don't have any proof of your claim. It's, for lack of a better word, IMO unknowable, at this point, scientifically.
@firuinthehouse "I quite strongly disagree with your idea that we die when our body dies... just like you don't have any proof"
.
I don't need proof because all I'm claiming is that when something is destroyed it stops working. Since we all know this to be true it doesn't require proving. If you claim an exceptional case, that does need evidence.
.
What do you think 'you' are? Not the brain? The human mind can't cope with alcohol, alzheimer's or LSD but somehow survives rotting and burning?
@chrisofnottingham Well for one thing I happen to know some parts of the mind work outside the brain, in non-local events. Don't know how, but I do work with Remote Viewing, have measured clear effects, and that's non-local perception, that should not happen in a 100% material universe
The rest of it is just supposition, psychoactive trips on my part, and therefore not proof of anything. I'm just saying you can't prove that we're dead when our bodies die, any more than I can prove we're not
@firuinthehouse "Well for one thing I happen to know some parts of the mind work outside the brain, in non-local events. Don't know how, but I do work with Remote Viewing, have measured clear effects, and that's non-local perception, that should not happen in a 100% material universe"

This would be ground-breaking stuff and would shake up science as much as Quantum Mechanics if true. Some kind of reference would be helpful to assist my belief in such an extraordinary claim.
@chrisofnottingham Well here's where some trouble in Paradise starts to show up. I know this stuff from my personal experience (running some Remote Viewing trials right now, vlogged about it in my videos) and also there's my RV practice site, going back a few years, people doing RV practice there pretty much daily, with no motive to fake it, as there's nothing being sold on that site. Also it is, as far as I know, impossible to fake good results, the way the site is setup.
@chrisofnottingham I'm doing the Associative RV trials partly because if it works, it makes money, and also because it does what you say: prove that RV is true, by offering clear numbers, in the form of deviation from pure chance, which shouldn't in fact be there.
In other words: ARV is a form of intuitive betting, that logically should fare no better than pure chance. If it does, then clearly there's an effect there. So far my results are great, but way too early, sample size is atm too small
@firuinthehouse " I'm doing the Associative RV trials partly because if it works, it makes money, and also because it does what you say: prove that RV is true, by offering clear numbers, in the form of deviation from pure chance, which shouldn't in fact be there."

@chrisofnottingham Heh, then I might one day call him on this. If I were a more consistent person (as in, do my daily practice for several years, like some viewers are doing) I would probably have done it already.
As it is I am very on-and-off about many things, including RV. Known and done it for 3 years total, but just a few weeks ago did I get it all together and put some money into a test. So far I doubled that money, and am expecting to keep going.
@chrisofnottingham In any case, the clear deviation from chance is my model of making a bunch of cash over the following months, so if RV is pure crap, of course this will not work.
The betting site's cut will make my account dwindle, as I get it wrong time after time, nearing on pure chance. So far I have 7 out of 8 games right, on games I knew absolutely nothing about (I mean not even the sport involved, or the names of the teams).
Do check my channel or reply to this in a few weeks/months.
@acountddd These are old comments. The YouTube comment box went through a phase where it didn't format paragraphs properly because it deleted any totally empty lines. One way to get something like a blank line was to only have a "."
@chrisofnottingham And yes if I claim (like religious people do) that I know for certain we die and go to Heaven or whatever, then yes that would require some pretty solid proof
I don't have the details, and frankly I don't think we can ever grasp that level of complexity with these brains, in their normal state
In any case I don't want to argue with you. What I'm saying is that it's not good to "believe" so strongly in what happens after death, with such religious conviction as you seem to :)
Christianity, Islam and many other religions are made just for the masses to find comfort. Our bodies last only so long and when they die they die. Some people can't really handle that so they created a vast array of superstitions, flashy robes and rituals, pissing off people who think and want real answers.
Just because some religious wackos are deluded doesn't mean the exact opposite of what they say is 100% correct.
@chrisofnottingham Ha Ha! Good point, yet they will still continue to clutch onto the emotional ties that may end up choking them. They will still desperately attempt to exchange currency for redemption.
@chrisofnottingham i dont believe there is an afterlife, but you cant prove anything and that you think you know everything shows only one thing, youre arrogant and ignorant
@Corpucle Sigh... If someone makes an extraordinary claim, like being able to fly by flapping their arms, then the burden of proof lies with them to demonstrate that they can do it, not with me to show that they can't. In the mean time no sane person would believe such a claim.
Similarly, life after death is an extraordinary claim which flys in the face of everything we already do know. Given that there is zero reliable evidence for it,, there is just no reason to believe it happens.
@chrisofnottingham the problem here is, flying you could prove, a life after death not. Just because Mediumship doesnt work, doesnt mean there is nothing. And you cant prove it either, i could know what axe you used but wouldnt be able to contact you ;)
@Corpucle " the problem here is, flying you could prove, a life after death not"
You could easily prove it if mediums could do what they say they can.
Either way, what you have said is that even though there is no valid evidence for something to exist, and despite for that thing to be true the whole universe would have to operate on completely different principals to what is currently supported by overwhelming evidence, you have decided to believe it anyway. Why would you do that?
@chrisofnottingham i told you, i dont believe it. But i would never say there is no way there is an Afterlife.mAnd you just dont get it, just because Mediumship doesnt work doesnt mean there is no afterlife. Mediumship not working is in no way a proof. Just because a african child never called me doesnt mean its not there ;)
@Corpucle I do understand that just because Mediumship doesnt work it doesnt mean there is no afterlife, and that just because an African child never called me it doesn't mean its not there.
But the difference is that there is plenty of other supporting evidence that Africa and children exist. To believe in something for which there is absolutely no valid supporting evidence means you should believe in every arbitrary thing conceivable unless it could be disproved.
@wallymeldrum Since it is not generally allowed to have more than one religion, Pascals wager leads to following the one religion with the worst punishment. This alone should tell you that it is rubbish. The fact that you can't decide your beliefs (as distinct from deducing them) should tell you it is complete and utter rubbish.
@chrisofnottingham Chris Carter addressed those objections in his 2010 book "Science and the Near Death Experience". Part 1 is all about conceptual issues (such as the issues you raised). Part 2 is about alleged evidence from NDEs. Part 2 is weaker than part 1. I think you'd enjoy part 1, even if you find part 2 underwhelming.
@chrisofnottingham Nice one. What i do these days when someone tries to convince me of an afterlife (a trick I learnt from penn and teller) is to ask them where they were before they were born. It sends them into a somnambulistic trance, right before there heads explode.
yeah luv, i hung myslelf. but as this bloke is sayin, im perfectly fine and im happy. so dont worry that i hated my life, cos im happy up here in a place that doesnt exist.
this does nothing to convince me that there aren't genuine mediums out there, only that Joe Power might not be genuine. I will never be convinced by Derren unless he stops going on about cold reading. Some of the mediums I have seen do NOT do this and are bang on the money.
@hilseymour well if they don't use cold reading what do they use? just because we havent got an answer for something doesnt mean we can throw any theory at it. its like when christians says "scientists dont fully know how the universe was made therefore we can say god did it.......without any proof"
@JoeNumberwang I agree, but that argument goes both ways. "If they don't use cold reading - what do they use? That's the whole question isn't it?" I love Derren, he's very intelligent and very entertaining and he knows what he's talking about, but so far all I've seen is him claiming that psychics don't exist because they're cold reading. I'm sure some are, but that doesn't fit in with my experience. There's room in the world for all different views.
@hilseymour but thats all derren is setting out 2 expose here.....if Joe Power is a real medium or not. I don't think in this show he ever says "There is no such thing as a real medium". He may say it in his other shows but just like you say thats down to your experiences, this claim is down to his experiances
@hilseymour The question is why do you accept mediums in the first place. It's really not up to the skeptic to show it doesn't work but up to the claimant to show it does. And from what I've seen most are cold reading and using high probability. Others I've seen hit more on the nose but it also happens that they had time to access info from the person. A situation where the person gets high hits and they didn't have access to the person doesn't mean they have powers, you need evidence for that.
@CriticalAtheist I don't fully accept psychic mediums exist, and am a skeptic myself. My point was, Derren banging on about how certain mediums are cold reading does not explain a lot of what I've seen. Mediums who don't just say things like "your mum was one of 5" and "she just wants to tell you she's fine". What's the point of that? If his goal is to show people that psychics are fakes and people should stop fooling themselves, this is not a convincing argument. Just ONE medium of many.
@hilseymour Actually no that's not what he's doing. He was even careful to never say this guy is a fraud. Can you show me these mediums you're talking about who couldn't be cold reading? Because of all the one's I've seen cold or warm reading couldn't be ruled out. And how do you propose Derren test all the mediums in the world by himself? What can he do other than this?
Of course it's not just Derren. No psychic has been able to demonstrate ability under controlled conditions.
@CriticalAtheist I do not "propose" that Derren test all the mediums in the world by himself, that would be ridiculous. Derren did not say Joe Power was a fraud - I didn't say that he did - but he does promote the view that mediums are merely cold readers, as evidenced by various interviews with him which you can see on youtube. I applaud what Derren does if it weeds out people claiming to be mediums with dubious skills.
@CriticalAtheist ...And unfortunately I can't show you any of the readings I felt couldn't be cold reading (you may say conveniently) as they were at live shows I attended. If I could show you them on video, that would not be proof of anything anyway as videos can be edited. It's one of those things people have to see for themselves and make their own minds up, I suppose.
@hilseymour Yes, that is convenient. I'd suggest these mediums you speak get tested. James Randi has a million dollars for anyone who can demonstrate such power. And I know Derren doesn't believe in psychic nor do I but that's not the same as claiming there could never be a psychic. All we're saying is that the evidence is lacking and the ultimate proof only seems to be in peoples memories.
@hilseymour Yes, there's plenty of warm/hot reading too i.e. people they already know about or have read before. Mediums love to have them at a session, they don't give away to the audience that they have met before and trot out a string of fantastic hits. Amazing isn't it.
if its real why does he get so angry at him?

@hilseymour The question is why do you accept mediums in the first place. It's really not up to the skeptic to show it doesn't work but up to the claimant to show it does. And from what I've seen most are cold reading and using high probability. Others I've seen hit more on the nose but it also happens that they had time to access info from the person. A situation where the person gets high hits and they didn't have access to the person doesn't mean they have powers, you need evidence for that.

@CriticalAtheist I don't fully accept psychic mediums exist, and am a skeptic myself.
