I've played NES Casltevania 2 Simon's Quest, which I immensely enjoy a midst all the frustrations and cheap deaths. How I wish a Konami put out a REAL Castlevania game on the wii, preferably 2D. I know the wii game's a fighter, must be fun
Great Review! I loved this game when it came out. A lot of people either don't know it even exists or just assume it sucks. The mood it creates is amazing. The amount of replay value is very high. I recently started playing it via emulator in 1080p with anti aliasing and antisotropic filtering with 2xsai filter. It looks amazing this way. One thing i noticed on the physical machine is that if you turn on the high res textures the frame rate drops considerably. I would leave the high res off.
castlevainia LOD and CV 64 were my favoirte fucking games on that system ahhh i remember that that chainsaw weilding frakenstein used to scare the SHIT out of me lol i always jumped down into a ditch so he couldnt get me lol xD ahhh the 90s...how i miss them :(
Lol I just found out this game exists, I'm gonna buy on the net, I only played Castlevania 64 and I thought it was tight. Everybody hates and shit but I thought it was sweet. I like that knight guy with his gun just walking all chill shooting shit.
Apart from being my 1st 3D game ever as well as being my 5th Caslevania i had ever played, The castle wall scared me as a child. I was that kid who discovered the series from their parents. We own every castlevania to date. I beat 1-5 at the ages of 6-9. Played LoD after my uncle brought it to my house one day. But Damn, Everytime i got to the wall, i would die from falling. This game is STILL hard for me at 18 but it's still a good game nonetheless. One of my Favorites.
Capcom just should have released this game n not Castlevania 64. The C64 was more annoying to play with due to it's glitches. I had the same dilemma with you, Knightwing01. I spent most of my time miscalculating my jumps n falling to constant deaths. However I think the story plot to both games were quite excellent n overall fun to play. I'll try soon to rematch those ledges at Duel Tower.. xD
Castlevania 64 was the first castlevania game ive ever played and i loved it.
The game play was fun, had great graphic, great music and an atmosphere that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Now that i look at this game (which i never had the chance to play, neither known of its existence) i feel like ive been living under a rock. Just seeing that its like the first one plus more, I feel like i have to play this game.
this is my favorite castlevania game next to sotn i mean i was like 4 when my cousin showed it to me on his n64 i loved it ever since i mean you turn into a freaking werewolf its awesome one year ago i downloaded an n64 emulator and this game everyday ever since i have been playing it even for 5 minutes a day
@kNIGHTWING01 They are fun if you don't mind getting killed 800 times because the camera messes with you and the controls are over sensitive. Legacy was a slight improvement but they still couldn't get the camera angles right.
Camera issue was only a concern in the Clock Tower & Tower of execution. Lacy wasn't just a little improvement over CV 64 its was an immense. CV games were known for losing many lives. Camera could center behind you faster, unlike the blocky movement of CV 64, visuals range smoother, less rigid and game didn't slow down nearly as often as CV 64. CV 64 was really a beta and half finished game, it had game breaking glitches and to many problems to name. LOD was the finished game.
@XEHANORT1000 you forgot Ogre battle 64, Perfect Dark and Zeldas games, imo thos are among the top ten of any N64 list games (specially OB64, still waiting to find a strategy/rpg as innovate and deep as that game)
@XEHANORT1000 I loved the N64 castle vania games, they were the best. I own and play xbox360, and ps3 all the time, I wish I could get back to N64, with legacy of darkness again.
@XEHANORT1000 i actually own both Castlevainia and Castlevainia Legacy of Darkness and they are both great games yea sure the camera angles are fucked but i managed i made the angles work for me and you sir wouldnt know a good game if it bit you in the ass
@XEHANORT1000 Well, Legacy of Darkness is still my favorite CV. I've played them all and none is as fun as this one. Not being sarcastic, you bag o' shit
@TiMMYSQUibbLES The only ones that have any female rescuing are Dracula X (and it's superior Japanese counterpart Rondo of Blood), Lament of Innocence, and Legacy of Darkness. In all the others, there are no females to rescue, or they've already been slain.
I played this game when i was 7 and i loved it now its been 13 years later and i bought this game again n it still pwns a lot. This game got me into the castlevania series!
here is something i don't understand, many people say that the n64 castlevania games is shit but many gaming websites and magazines give them above average to great reviews!
Ok N64 Castlevania is bad, tons of glitches and its a joke. Legacy of Darkness released several months later. Its the Directors cut and fixed 95% of the Glitches and improved the camera. However; LOD is a rare CV game and not many have played it.
@kNIGHTWING01 I bought C-64 on release day (January '99) and was really excited. Then, I beat it the same night... I thought "that was lame!" and instantly gave me a bias opinion of the 3D version. seriously man this game for a castlevania game this is the most horrible game ever man! NO WAY!!! SORRY! just my opinion you do great reviews by the way love the chrono trigger one now thats a game

no, it's just called Castlevania, but alot of people know it by Castlevania 64, it's a really fun, but game with a terrible camera though. But it's highly fun, im now playing it which makes me feel dumb cuz i owned it for a long time.
I have one more question, I can't seem to find anything out about on the internet, but my question is can you turn into a werewolf in the fist game? sorry for all the questions
So if you play as cornell it's the updated LOD version with new levels and if you unlock carrie or reinhardt and play as them it's the castlevania 64 version? Is that right? Thanks
I hate how bad people complain about this game. It was the first castlevania I ever played as well as the first one to actually scare my little baby ass lol
konami realy screwed us castlevania fans back then. release a game that has been anticipated since n64 came out.. and it is a total crap fest. then not even a year later bring out a better game with the old game on it.
@pittypopo ur not missing much, i think the first one was better any way, LODs plot wasnt that great, they just added a few levels and chars to change it up a little, and the final battle with dracula was way more difficult because of the ridiculously small area that they let u move in
dude this game is underrated for a reason, it sucked, the new levels were horrible and the new final battle with Dracula was just shy of impossible, they gave u so little room to move and only one opportunity to attack and Dracula almost never misses
while I agree with you, I must also offer my disagreements: for starters, Legacy of Darkness was the FIRST attempt at 3d platforming so it wasnt that great but it had its moments whereas curse of darkness, your right it is better granted it had more to do like the ability to create your own weapons n shit and at the time Legacy of Darkness was good and now its highly overlooked for games like Lament of Innocence or Curse of Darkness.
does anyone remember in the first castlevania game when you are that dude and you have like a bomb on you and you cant jump....i never found out how to get through that part lol

have you guys notice its the 10th anniversary of castlevania 64 and legecy of darkness time sure flies huh so happy anniversary to castlevania 64 and legecy of darkness
Hmm... I sort of liked Lament of Innocence. It grew on me a little. Playing as Leon was cool. Didn't like Curse of Darkness at all though. And I LOVE this game.
i hope so. i really loved this game. i can still remember jumping my way through the game at the age of 8 lol. ive never played LOD so that would be interesting.

Recently when I decided to lay through all the Castlevania games I played CV64 for the first time.
It wasn't horrible, but very frustrating and badly designed. An unfinished game, ovbiously.
However, Legacy of Darkness is great and it's my second favorite 3D Castlevania.
Too bad Konami rushed Castlevania 64 because after that people lost trust in the other 3D'Vanias. Which is a shame, because the rest is good.

Hey Kwing . This is just a question, not a request or anything. Do you ever plan on reviewing quantum of solice for the wii?

Hmm... I sort of liked Lament of Innocence. It grew on me a little. Playing as Leon was cool. Didn't like Curse of Darkness at all though. And I LOVE this game.
