  • This song is about a pain so deep we can all identify with, I remember gasping when I listened to the whole album that closed with this

  • Wow his voice is beautiful live!

  • Great song.

    NIN rules.

Trent kicks ass, love this song.

  • And if one more idiot tries to dispute me I'll really start.

  • Does it really matter what genre people say it is? I'm so tired of these people who try to act like real hardcore music fans: "It can't be pop because I like it" kind of crap. Who cares what pidgeon hole people try to force music into, when the only thing that honestly, truly matters is that there is enjoyment to be had in the listening. People are trying to buy into an image. I think that the moment you dispute a musical genre, you take away from the music itself. Who, honestly, gives a fuck.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself my friend. Just sit and listen to the amazing poetry in this song.

  • Thank you.

I was never trying to argue about genre in the first place it just turned into that, I'm so sick of debating genres on youtube.

  • I agree its about the music, not what hole thats trying to be plugged.

  • This performance gives you goosebumps I swear.

  • i watch a lot of youtube videos, but this might be the most moving live performance out there

  • Whats the first?

  • 2ND BEST SAD SONG EVER!!

  • whats the first?

  • yester day

  • ABBA's "Winner Takes It All" is the third.

  • to true

  • In this version.

  • Great song.

    A classic.

Odd use of wind effects throughout though.

  • 3:56

  • +1 from russia

  • I'm sorry to tell you this but your wrong it was released on the album The Downward Spiral by: Nine Inch Nails in 1994.

On his 2002 album, Johnny Cash did a stark cover of it. In the video, the 71-year old Cash appears very fragile. Cash wore no makeup. This was interspersed with footage of Cash in his younger days. The video appeared to be Cash's obituary, as he was in failing health after a life filled with drug-abuse.

So Trent Wrote it almost a decade before Cash covered it.

  • omg ur probly joking but i jusst wanna pop u in da nutsack or vag brook1rc trent tells me to say "fuck you ass kisser"...piss piss in ur ass

  • Idiot, it was written by Trent Reznor. Do your research.

  • Comment removed

  • No dude. Johnny Cash covered it.

  • idiot.

  • u deserve to be beaten up for being some dumb..

  • Amazing song

  • Damn who can come out and make such a moving song like that....One of the best bands ever for sure

  • i woodnt call it a band its really a one man band.. u probly no dis

  • No its a band trust me i would know this, unless you know everything about the band that currently is playing and all of their players dont say its not a band, It takes more than one person to make something work so well like this. So TheNineinchsnails learn what you are saying

  • yes danny lohner and many others help him out with his lyric writing and stuff but when it comes down to it its really trent reznor.. umm he doesnt tour anymore so yes i no all the times they are playing..i no more than u bout nin ask me anything i will answer it and i wont google the answer

  • Comment removed

  • k bud in ur definition of a one man band...ther wood be no one man bands...fergie (i hate to bring her up) has her own little solo carrer.. but that duznt mean she is the only one who works there are other ppl who help her out with the recording and some of the producing and when she is live...but when it comes down to it..its trents band he is the founder he decides who he wants to tour with no 1 else has a say.. but he duz hav ppl who help him out im sure.. a handfull of ppl

  • He's the man for sure.

He does play and program alot of his own music as well as sing and write and everything else.

I wish he had a consistent band but he mixes up whom he works with often.

I just don't see him as a one man band, but for a musician with mainstream fame and riches, he does have maximum integrity and independence without a doubt.

    NIN Rules.

  • mainstream fame.

NiN wasn't "mainstream" and I don't think it will ever be mainstream.

His motives aren't about being "christina aguilera" status at all. It's about music, performing and getting his music heard.

    That is all.

  • "That is all"?

    You don't know shit.

People like you are exactly why so many songs suck balls.

    NIN is pop.

Pop means popular music you fucking moron.

    NIN is popular.

    THAT is all.

  • So if you think NiN is "pop" then what kind of non-mainstream music are you listening to? Because they're as far away from backstreet boys, cindi lauper, and whoever else you want to tag with that title.

  • perfect

  • Amazing composer and songwriter, great lyrics as well.

  • What a powerful live performance!

  • its now official a evergreen song

A song that wil be rememberd.

  • this song is truly one of the best songs in creation

  • grande cash

  • i love this song... one of the most amazing songs ever written...

  • 1999 star valley party on

  • The song resonates beyond religous lines. If it has a certain meaning for you you so be it. The pain of addiction what it does to your life and you loved ones. There is some meaning it this song for everyone.

  • A similar musical expression is found in Beethoven's 9th. It is an Ode to Joy, but you can not know joy without knowing pain. Hurt.

  • OK, is there another version ? Perhaps another thousand of other concerts that you didn't see ?

"Oh, what a nice girl on the playboy magazine... I think I'm in love"

  • This is by far my favorite version of "Hurt".

  • What Johnny Cash recognized in this song was it's pure expression of our fallen state. There is redemption, but we can not do it alone, we need to believe in Christ.

  • +10000

    Jesus FTW!

  • why would you believe in something that doesnt believe in you?

  • christ did not exist. spirituality is one thing, but fairy tales are another.

and the mind is a very powerful thing, it can make anything you want seem real, whether its true or not.

  • You believe Christ did not exist. But I agree, the mind is very powerful. I'm am not religious though I am spiritual. I believe that everyone has the right to believe what ever they want. I do not approve of people forcing their beliefs onto others without hard evidence to back it up. There is evidence that there was a Jesus of Nazareth around the time period of that in the bible. Whether he was the son of god I will not debate. But his teachings are no less valid.

  • Do you apply that philosophy to your own life? - or is that just something you tell yourself to maintain a feeling of superiority over people who have different philosophies than yourself? I mean this as an honest question and not with malice...because I find myself doing the same thing.

  • i absolutely do apply it to my own life. i want real answers rather than dwelling on things that clearly arent true.

  • I consider this as on of the best songs ever made..

Everytime I listen it..it just amazes me..

    So simple..so powerfull..so emotional

  • my life to a t....amen

  • But I remember everything

  • they have almost as many fans as Tool

  • This reminds me of my Roskilde Festival expirience this summer when NIN played this song. I thought that moment would be my last.

It was so beautiful to listen to and the emotions in Trents face and voice were shockingly vivid for all of us that were there. I'd do anything to relive that moment.

This is truly an epic song, I went to Roskilde for the music but left feeling like I'd been there ONLY for that moment where I was standing in the pit and they started to play this song.

  • I know exactly what you mean - I was on the rail, front of the crowd at V-Fest in Toronto, they headlined...and this song was more than a song. The whole place shrank and everyone just stared in awe and sang along. Epic really is the only word for it. Seeing this live was one of the greatest moments of my life thus far...and I've lived a happy life to date.

  • I saw it last year in st. louis when i was 21 and I swear if I live long enough I will remember that single moment until I am 91. You can't even put a price on that 5 minutes in time. I mean the show was awesome as a whole, but it is this song that I will always remember.

  • Allez voir mon humble reprise, people.

    Go see my humble cover.

    Peace -

  • i consider this my national anthem. always brings a tear to my eye.

  • This is great and so sad song :((

  • thank you

  • i agree this is just amazing

  • scary how passionate he sings this song... poor guy :(

    still great song!

  • this just made me cry... amazing.

  • theres a reason why Cash covered this song, and its pretty evident..epic,bloody epic.

  • This preformance is just amazing, I like it better than the studio version, Johnny Cash really turned a great song into a better one, but you can't beat the original.

  • i love this song, and i think NIN are musical geniuses, but, i like johnny cash's version better.

  • por dios !!!!!!! el primer dia q escuche esta cancion no podia entender, no podia comprender como describia, transmitia tan bien el dolor.

  • i belive this is their best version. of the song

  • whose singing the song here? The crowd or Trent?

  • And dead... and his house is burnt to the ground. Get a life.

  • this is the better verson

  • this is perfect!

  • didn't realize he couldnt post his opinion.

  • You realize this is their song right... Cash's is an acoustic rendition, so of course it is different.

  • So you like the song, but hate Trent? Well he mustn't suck that much if he fucking wrote it.

  • i like metallica, but i hate lars ulrich. i hate axl rose, but i like (old) gnr. its possible for dicks to make good music

  • Trents Dick made "Big man with a gun" hahaha.

  • i cannot repair... word the fuck up ! love NIN

  • i "will" make you hurt...

  • This song is great. I just heard this song done on the harp, very beautiful, search hurt harp to hear it.

  • I don't know... I was a big NIN fan back in the 90s, and I've heard Cash's version. I respect him (Cash) as a great musician, but his version just doesn't sound right... NIN does it so much better in my opinion.

  • Yeah I don't know but it sounds, upbeat. The way Trent sings it is like he's just fading away.

  • great song

  • oh this song live gives me shivers, i cant wait to see it live on sunday, wohoo!!!

  • Oxygen Baby these were brilllllant

  • They played this on the Wave Goodbye Tour as the last song... I almost cried when I saw it live, it was so beautiful, it really was...

And they ended the show great, they played it like the original which means the loud ending came in, and then they threw their instruments down and walked off stage...

    Great show

  • this is the best song

  • EPIC

  • This song defines alot of people (me included). The song is open ended like many of Trent's songs in which they have different meanings for anybody. Johny Cash's version is great too and it seemed to fit him in terms of his life. Ironically one of the last songs he recorded before his passing.....

  • Cash was brilliant at that...he could take ANY song and make it his own, that's a real talent...to cover a song is one thing, to MAKE the song yours is something totally different...when I first heard Rusty Cage by him I was in shock lol

  • EPIC!!!!!!!

  • seeing him perform this song live was a staple in my life i'll never forget, cathartic, breathtaking, unbelievably emotional and beautiful, NIN live is unbeatable

  • This song defines me!!!

  • i hav listened 2 this song 4 the past 3 hours and it is still fucking awesome

  • It is deep = from the soul

  • I used to think that Johnny Cash wrote this, sorry to all you NIN hardcore fans...I also used to think his version was better...But as i listen to this song more and more...NIN's version is 10x better...But I still love Johnny's!

  • Don't we all have a version of this? Isn't just the one we relate to? Just sayin' is all.

  • unreal. spine tingling performance.

  • Shit this version makes me wish Reznor would have done the original on a piano. Its just sick. Great vid!

  • it never gets old

    amazing

  • The best song of the whole concert!!

  • Great song.

  • such a beautiful yet sad song,it sometimes reflects on myself if things go bad for me

  • One of the most powerful, tragic, moving and emotive songs ever written.

  • Amazing!

  • magic

  • From the first to last note of this song, there is complete beauty and sadness.

  • This is like my favorite song by them...EVER

  • one of the best songs ever written !!

  • Awsome!! gorgeous

  • kickass
