The church was very humble and meek at first and the romans were more concerned with the Jewish uprising than christianity. So, no it was not brought by fire and the sword. In fact, in the late first century and early second century the emperor Nero was persecuting and oppressing christians. Keep in mind that this was after the Gospels had been written.

And there is another thing, that I find rather obnoxious. This idea, that everyone, who refuses this idea goes to another idea, called "hell". What kind of a god would abandon someone, who maybe was a great and humble human being, just because he never believed? The first thing that "god" looks after is if someone praised him. If someone was a lovely human being .... it won't help. For he still goes to hell as long as he didn't praise the lord. What does that say about "god"?

For instance, I trust that the earth will continue to orbit the sun because based on evidence this a reasonable assumption. Of course, tomorrow something could impact earth and knock it off its axis and thus my assumption would be incorrect. But, i have faith that this will not happen.

For instance, your reason could convince you that anaesthetics will not under anaesthetize you and that properly trained surgeons will not operate on you until you are under. When I compare faith/trust and blind followship, I mean that trusting in any guidance, it always is blind followship to some degree. You never know for sure, where this guidance may lead you. And how is this more true then for "god"?

Because to know that you can trust "god", you would have to know (!) that he exists to begin with. How can you really judge if your trust in someone seems to be justified, when you never see this someone and actually have no real chance to ever meet him in your life? The followship you are obviously willing to join is blind. Trust is just a nicer word for it.

For me these liberalizations are only an expression of how chritianity and the church had to go with time. And if it wouldn't be for societal progress, this claim that all non-believers go to hell, would still be uttered openly without any stupid feelings. It just became politically incorrect to point that out. So now christians tend to tip-toe around the not so nice parts of their bible - non-believers going to hell being one of them.

But these other guys and thousands of other christian people (maybe from an other church etc.) would say the same thing about you. And what does that translate into? Off course, there are also many nice christian folks, who are altruistic and just fine. But religion (not only christianity) is NEVER a necessity to be a good human being. To be someone, who cares. But what religion all too often is, is a driving force for totally irrational hatred and ludicrous claims to power. It divides the people in believers/non-believers, salvation/hellfire, christians/muslims ... it is as dangerous as racism in my eyes.

i think if you would look at the demographics of christians vs. satanists, the middle 50% of christians would fall in a higher income level than that of satanists so your theory of hope for the impoverished is inaccurate and untrue. i would however agree that other religions may have more followers that are less fortunate, but that still does not prove that religion is just a fruitless investment of time, thought, and soul
