For a quick answer....The planet's outer 'skin' is made up of many 'plates'. Due to the fact that the bit just under the 'skin' is molten this allows those 'plates' to move. This is VERY basically what plate tectonics is. Movement of the plates across the planet.
2 plates pushing against each other is how we get the mountains. The Himalayas are a good example of this.
There is a LOT more to it than that...But its a good place to start.

This guy should have been a priest, not a Science Teacher. But besides that fact, It was fucking hilarious. I must say that made my evening.
