@resetone- any other bad excuses you wanna make up about an LSX motor? o.0 ?didn't think so. Rotaries can be great, but LSX's are just plain better. And lasts longer too!
If rotary engines were such shit they wouldn't have a 6 second 2 rotar rx7. Plain and simple. I own an rx8 and know plenty of people with piston engine and they love the rotary for the simple fact of what you can do with such a little engine. Let alone the fact that the rx8 handles 10x better than those v8 cars you were talking about. When you can take a circle off-ramp at 80 and not even have your tires squeak let me know.
i bet that REALLY fucks with people on the road.random drivers-"oh cool,an RX7,get ready for the leaf blower sounding rotary" *drives by*-VVRRRRROOOOOOOMMM.....random driver- O.o wtf?!
Rotary > LS1 any day, because rotarys make such better paperweights. The LS1 is too huge and bulky to be a good paperweight, thats why Japan is superior.
@resetone .... sigh... when we people realize that the ls1 is fairly light and small because it is an OHV 2 valve engine. that 5.7l is bore size only... doesnt mean the engine as a whole is big. In final.. that rotary engine isn't that much lighter than the 5.7
@3star2nr cause they're dumbasses lol. Its putting a good engine to good use, into a good chassis for good use. Good power, good steering, good balance, good overall suspension setup, DRIFT.
Looks like an RX7 sounds like a Camaro still pretty awesome and probably a lot cheaper then building a 20B though purists would say no rotary it's not an RX.
nice, wish you could hear it better! personally i'd never do the swap on a turbo rx, but my 91 N/A is fair game! not saying i don't like it, but those twin turbo fd's are pretty sweet!
The 13B & LS1 both have hardcore followers as you can see in the comments. Believe me when I say I love both engines. But there is nothing wrong when someone goes a different way for power. Its just another way of reaching optimal performance in their eyes. Any rotary fan has to admit that a modified LS1 engine has a awesome sound to it. One thing though, in this video, it did seem like the FD drove more like a heavy Camaro and not a balance sports car. Maybe stick with drag racing.
@aptara1 you are right that car 50/50 weight balance must be ruined. LS1 engines are good , but by swaping the lighter smaller 1.3 engine for that LS1 they ruined the balance.
@the13joker my understanding is that the weight difference isnt so big with the aluminum ls1, plus the engine is placed farther back which keeps the weight very close to the original balance
@PVTstupid - I've read too about the LS1 in the RX7 but again this FD in the video drove more like a heavy Camaro and not a balanced sports car . Can we agree on that?
@10072018 not at al and it largely onl y adds that little weight because the turbo systems on those cars have some weight to them. and to get the same power out of the rotary costs a fortune and you will never get the torque the v8 offers off the bottom end
Here is perfect proof that the V8 improved the car and did NOT ruin the handling. Those rotards need to get a clue. The rotary is junk. That is why they get replaced with piston engines.
@Rotaryisgarbage isn't it actually 1 more rotor of fail? 20b is triple rotor, not quad... quad rotor is like the mazda 787b... which by anybody's standards, is pretty freakin sweet
i have a 93 rx7 and yes the engine can be hi maintenance, but then so are all serious sports cars. i have never had to rebuild the engine because i have been careful not to let the engine overheat (i put in a larger radiator) and its been totally fine. even if the engine did need replacing im ok with it because the rx7 is a car that has held its value better than any other car i can think of.

I will give credit where credits due. The one benefit of swapping them into track cars is that they produce excellent, high-winding power-to-weight... But thats it.
Frankly, they're more suited to airplanes or track-only vehicles. Entirely too problematic for street use.
LOL..I think you are the ignorant one as the driver in the vid has a working car which is more than could be said for the same car with the original engine. Another rotard moron.
oh really? then i ask, why is it that rotarys have been used in la mans (if you even know what that is)? and why is it that they can easily squeeze out 400+HP with 2.0L of displacement?
Try to spell it correctly moron. It is LeMans. It appears you don't know what it is since you can't even spell it. They can't easily squeeze 400 out of it especially without forced induction. It takes quite a bit and ruins the already poor drivability and reliability. The rotary is junk. Get a clue. The rotary blows up and people replace them with piston engines all the time. If the rotary was so great, people wouldn't replace the engine.
your right i dont know what the LeMans is cause i misspelled le, and you think rotarys blow up tht often? why dont you check out how many tools ruin there precious little corvettes cause they try and squeeze some boost and nitrous into their engines
aji8, don't get me wrong, i love the sound that that huge v8 pushes out, and i love the rotary. but thery're not to be compared the way you do. the rotary is a good engine if you take care of it. end of case. you treat it right, and it'll treat you right.
And may I ask, what's so great about your v8, besides the sound?? that rod knock?? the fact of knowing that your engine is seen on the street more times than your mother?? barely??
You are correct. The rotary shouldn't be compared to a much better engine. The rotary is suited better to toy airplanes and such as it is only good as a novelty. If you believe that the rotary will treat you well if you treat it well, keep dreaming. The rotary is flawed by design, and you need to quit blaming rotary owners as they mostly are not to blame. Fact is that my engine WILL be seen on the street more than the rotary which will be in the shop for another rebuild.
I don't know man, I'd rather have the rotary in it just because I personally liked the sound better, and it kinda seems like an ls1 would make the car a bit too heavy for my tastes. I like em light and nimble, but it also did seem to perform well enough :O
I agree with @gundeb, and @original driver, ive heard both sides of the "sucking gas like a private jet" thing. and they have less moving parts which would make them more reliable
IMO, while not a rotary hater at all, I will say, if they were anywhere near as reliable as an American V-8, we would not be having this discussion right now.
ah its awesome. why so many ppl do it if its so stupid. yes a rotary can be awesome on paper but the up keep is crazy stupid. if u had the funds to keep fixing a 13b or mayb a 20b if u got money would b great but for daily race like he is doing on a budget you can not beat an ls series v8
ls1 has a HUGE mod market, very reliable, improves the front/rear weight distribution and makes more power completely stock. yeah, you're right. who would put an ls1 in an rx7?
oh great, here's another argument w/ another dumbass muscle head. haha, and it juss so happens i saw another POS domestic.... a ford. broken down in the middle of the turning lane.....
negative, its not an argument with a musclehead. you're ignorant. you wont admit that an ls1 is a solid motor. have you ever heard of a 2jz? solid ass motor with a huge mod market. apples to apples.
I had a 93 rx-7 r1 the thing was a monster I had a 99 efeni spec motor in it and it was a blast to drive. I took a friends ls3 swapped FD out over the summer and its a blast too. Different power character and dare I say faster....but both were fun they require different driving styles to make the most out of each power plant but all in all if I had a blown up rx-7 chassis I would swap in an ls3 in a heart beat.
Rotary facts con't - Weighs 370lbs...so yes it is in fact lighter. If you take off all of the accessories on the engine that aren't needed and swap to a single turbo instead of the heavy stock sequential setup you'll shed a shit load of weight.
All in all both are great choices...it's a matter of taste. Personally I like the swap. America never had a LIGHTWEIGHT (Under 3000lbs...lol) V8 two seater and now it does....courtesy of Mazda and Chevy. :-)
America had the Cobra which even though it was an AC Bristol body, the chassis was beefed here and the drivtrain was all American. The small block ones were well under 3000 lbs.
I consider the Cobra American.
In regards to the Hemi v LSx issue, when the Hemi came out it was compared side by side with an LS1 or 2 and was judged superior in every way stronger, lighter etc. The Hemi head flows more at .3 vlv lift than an LS1 at .7 which is full lift. Granted GM has continued developing the LS.
However, the hemi weighs 485lbs according to Dodge and isn't all that compact compared to an LS2 or LS7 which weight 430 lbs. Not much diff, but still a bit.
Shelby Cobra .. based on the AC ..and if i remember the episode, the Sunbeam Tiger v8 is also a spin off the AC . I would have to find that 5th gear episode again to be sure.
LSX facts - Weighs 450-ish lbs depending on the LS...makes a fun torquey V8 two seater (like most british sports cars) and since most are swapped without AC or accessories, it doesn't really add much weight in the end.
Rotary Facts - This is not the old trial and error days. Tuners know how to make reliable power with these engines....mostly with E85...lol. Saying they lack torque is somewhat incorrect...they're on boost usually....it's all about tuning
I love watching vids like this where these people who have never owned or driven a fast car in there life like to give there unknowable two cents.
Fact is this is not the late 60's or early 70's people, American cars and engines are a lot light, stronger and put out much better numbers. Long are the days of big ass front heavy Chargers people, shit has changed. People need to stop speaking out the ass, the proof is all around you and its that the LSX motor makes everything better, period LOL!
I can tell by the way you talk you have no knowledge on cars. Just because Brooke Burke calls them "Tuners" in NFSU2, doesn't mean they're "Tuners". It's a light car, why not put a SBC in it?
it a japanese mazada....hear me mazda!that runs the whole paicfic muscle to it...its like in tokyo drift ....putting a nissan 240sx engine in a mustang fastback ...its just no pride there
You must be retarded. You just related a car to something out of The Fast and The Furious. And the motor that went into the Mustang wasn't a 240sx motor, it came out of an FD RX-7.
Stop giving rx7 drivers a bad name. it wasnt a rotary engine going into the Mustang it was out of the stacked 240sx from the first car park drifting scene.
I'm not giving the RX7 drivers a bad name, I'm correcting a retard. I apologize, I haven't seen the movie in a year, I thought they took it out of the wide bodied RX7, I have no idea why I thought that. He thinks it's gay to put an LS1 in an FC/FD, which isn't. It's a light chassis, why not throw an SBC in it?
Ok my appologies in that case. Nah it came out of the "mona lisa" silvia :) The V8 FD's are awesome, and have their own appeal alongside the rotary engines. Personally i love the way it drives with a relatively stock engine and on twins but can appreciate others prefer big single turbos and triple rotors etc. :)
Dude, it was a Nissan Skyline RB26 straight six. But the guy has a point. This is like that, taking an american car and mating it with a japanese engine, and taking a japanese car and mating it with an american engine.
Picture this scenario, some redneck is laughing at a 240sx, then the guy in the 240 revs it, and it has an LS1. Could you imagine the look on that hicks face?
actually i do know about the fact that rotaries are indeed crap and a bitch to maintain but like i sed earlier, its the fact that its unique in which keeps others from swapping it. its a different type of engine. Although i probably wuldnt drive it daily, id still take a 13b over the swap. Its just that sum ppl perfer something unique like a rotary. and just because i dont have 1 doesnt mean i can't research. I still haven't driven my rsx and i still no a fair amount of info about its engine.
Yet another nicely swapped LSX-RX7, I really do hate the fact that people can't be more open minded about this sort of thing, don't get me wrong the Rotary Engine these cars came with is a marvel of engineering... But it's quite unreliable, gets terrible gas mileage, The LSX swap is the way to go for these cars, better gas mileage, higher power potential, much more reliable... I'd love to have 2 of these, one with an LSX engine and the other with the rotary, so I can have both worlds...
where in jersey are you . i would like to take a look at this ls1 rx7.. i saw giant stadium behind you . i didnt even know they did this kind of stuff there.. i live liek five minutes away from there
you sad fuck keep your fucking piece of shit v8's in the big pieces of shit they came in and leave us rotary bloke alone , you fucked a beatiful car and im sure a lot of people agree
All you people wondering about the ls1 swaps in an rx7.... This type have swap has been around ever since the car has... Light weight car, big v-8 makes for easy 10's in the 1/4....
i no rotarys are a pain in the ass because of maintenance but y a v8 in a 7? thats a waste. but hey, at least it gives other car owners the 13b theyve always wanted so i guess it culd be a win 4 every1
psh this swap culdnt handle a touge 4 shit. do u even no wat a ricer is? dont judge ppl u dont no u fckin fag. id do this swap if i only did drag but i dont, so in my opinion, its not the best swap for me. stop talking shit about others just bcuz they arent like u.
Possibly weighs less since it's aluminium vs cast iron. I love both the rotary and LS motors but in the long run, I would just go with an LS motor swap. Honestly this ignorant anti V8 anti rotary shit makes everyone arguing the points sound like a bunch of homos. Get a grip people and stop with the black and white and step into the gray. Fuck.
i agree with u 100 percent if a person is a true car enthusiast they would like a car like this and others i mean its hard sticking to one car brand i mean look at my screen name lol
what isnt better about this swap over the original? i like rotarys but with this swap you lose a little weight, gain about double the hp. you get about the same, slightly faster, low end acceleration and alot lot better mid and high. so it couldnt handle as good cause it weighs about the same or becuase it accelerates harder out of the turns? im not sure im following.
yes the ls1 is better for hp i guess but in terms of handling, it's a bad choice. If you think about it, the 13b is more compact and further away from the front. With the ls engine in there, alot of the weight is in front giving it bad handling. Plus, rotarys lack torque so i guess it's harder to spin the wheels, therefore helping in exit acceleration. If the 13b and ls had the same hp, then the rotary wuld probably win on turns. But the ls wuld win on a straight.
@resetone- any other bad excuses you wanna make up about an LSX motor? o.0 ?didn't think so. Rotaries can be great, but LSX's are just plain better. And lasts longer too!

Rotarys are great motors, but have there downsides as do every motor, if you dont own a rotary then leave it at that
gundeb 2 years ago 2
I agree with @gundeb, and @original driver, ive heard both sides of the "sucking gas like a private jet" thing. and they have less moving parts which would make them more reliable
jgkov49 2 years ago
They are less reliable due to their design. It has nothing to due with the number of parts moron.

I owned a rotary and was more than happy to pull the POS

ok the ls1 is a solid motor but please stop putting them into FD's!!! your ruinning such a beautiful car!!!

ls1 fd ftw.
webman405 2 years ago 17
IMO, while not a rotary hater at all, I will say, if they were anywhere near as reliable as an American V-8, we would not be having this discussion right now.
BigBlockMoparMan 2 years ago
ah its awesome. why so many ppl do it if its so stupid. yes a rotary can be awesome on paper but the up keep is crazy stupid. if u had the funds to keep fixing a 13b or mayb a 20b if u got money would b great but for daily race like he is doing on a budget you can not beat an ls series v8

why put ls1 in a fuckin rx7!?!!?!?
keep the rotary... its better

billyjohnson777 2 years ago
ls1 has a HUGE mod market, very reliable, improves the front/rear weight distribution and makes more power completely stock. yeah, you're right. who would put an ls1 in an rx7?
StateChampsChris 2 years ago
yeah, give it a couple runs and that fuckin motor would give out on u juss like very other piece of shit domestic muscle car
rsxezzy 2 years ago
yeah if you short shift and rev the hell out of it like all the ricers do. just cause you can rev a motor to 9k doesn't mean you should
StateChampsChris 2 years ago
oh great, here's another argument w/ another dumbass muscle head. haha, and it juss so happens i saw another POS domestic.... a ford. broken down in the middle of the turning lane.....
rsxezzy 2 years ago
negative, its not an argument with a musclehead. you're ignorant. you wont admit that an ls1 is a solid motor. have you ever heard of a 2jz? solid ass motor with a huge mod market. apples to apples.
StateChampsChris 2 years ago
yeah, i heard of a 2jz.
juss look up quadrotary engine
and see the potential a rotary engine has
rsxezzy 2 years ago
yea put in a ls7 instead

a LS1 is an all aluminum GM V8 engine
primarily used in a camaro, firebird and corvettes.

LS1 is the engine in a corvette, theres also LS7, LS9, LSX.

What are those wheels? They look damm nice...
SinisterDexter1 2 years ago
Rotary facts con't - Weighs 370lbs...so yes it is in fact lighter. If you take off all of the accessories on the engine that aren't needed and swap to a single turbo instead of the heavy stock sequential setup you'll shed a shit load of weight.
All in all both are great choices...it's a matter of taste. Personally I like the swap. America never had a LIGHTWEIGHT (Under 3000lbs...lol) V8 two seater and now it does....courtesy of Mazda and Chevy. :-)
End extremely long rant....
evoxboostin 2 years ago
America had the Cobra which even though it was an AC Bristol body, the chassis was beefed here and the drivtrain was all American. The small block ones were well under 3000 lbs.
I consider the Cobra American.
In regards to the Hemi v LSx issue, when the Hemi came out it was compared side by side with an LS1 or 2 and was judged superior in every way stronger, lighter etc. The Hemi head flows more at .3 vlv lift than an LS1 at .7 which is full lift. Granted GM has continued developing the LS.
BigBlockMoparMan 2 years ago
Good point.
However, the hemi weighs 485lbs according to Dodge and isn't all that compact compared to an LS2 or LS7 which weight 430 lbs. Not much diff, but still a bit.
evoxboostin 2 years ago
With Mopar power, I'll spot ya 55 lbs LOL Someone needs to Hemify the FD.
BigBlockMoparMan 2 years ago
Especially considering the rx7 was a 50/50 car and a 13b shortblock is around 140 pounds. Handles like a dream, still not enough power.
jgcoolidge1 2 years ago
AC Cobra is a british car... not american
SinisterDexter1 2 years ago
No, the AC Bristol is British, but also not a Cobra.
The British never made a Cobra.
It is not a Cobra until extensively modded by Shelby and stuffed with an American drivetrain.
The Cobra, then, is American.
BigBlockMoparMan 2 years ago 6
ive always heard it called the AC Cobra.. never saw or heard it as another name...hmm
darkeyce02 2 years ago
Shelby Cobra .. based on the AC ..and if i remember the episode, the Sunbeam Tiger v8 is also a spin off the AC . I would have to find that 5th gear episode again to be sure.
mosswalker2 2 years ago
@BigBlockMoparMan
AC Cars made the original chassis' for the cobra and gave them to shelby. all he did was get ford to agree to supply the engines.
it is a british car with an american heart. ;)
AWJFunk 1 year ago
Now where was I? OK here we go...
Saying they lack torque is somewhat incorrect...they're on boost usually....it's all about tuning
evoxboostin 2 years ago
I hate these arguements that start on every god damn LS1 RX7 vid...
BOTH a great engines. There are unfair prejudices against both.
People in the "rotard" crowd claim it makes it unpure and nose heavy...
People in the "meathead" crowd claim the rotary is unreliable and slow.
Both crowds are stupid. It's like listening to extreme left and right political views. Neither has the facts.
Continued in next comment.
evoxboostin 2 years ago
Why doesnt someone put a new Hemi in one? Or have they?
BigBlockMoparMan 2 years ago
Because the Hemi sucks compared to an LS1, or LS2 or LS3 or LS7....lol.
evoxboostin 2 years ago
I love watching vids like this where these people who have never owned or driven a fast car in there life like to give there unknowable two cents.
Fact is this is not the late 60's or early 70's people, American cars and engines are a lot light, stronger and put out much better numbers. Long are the days of big ass front heavy Chargers people, shit has changed. People need to stop speaking out the ass, the proof is all around you and its that the LSX motor makes everything better, period LOL!
SpikeRazzor 2 years ago
Y its a light car that looks good and given the power of V8 can be very very fun
paulfenderply57 2 years ago
why the hell would you put a v8 in a tuner!!WTF
valerianspeed 2 years ago
I can tell by the way you talk you have no knowledge on cars. Just because Brooke Burke calls them "Tuners" in NFSU2, doesn't mean they're "Tuners". It's a light car, why not put a SBC in it?
subireza 2 years ago 2
it a japanese mazada....hear me mazda!that runs the whole paicfic muscle to it...its like in tokyo drift ....putting a nissan 240sx engine in a mustang fastback ...its just no pride there
valerianspeed 2 years ago
You must be retarded. You just related a car to something out of The Fast and The Furious. And the motor that went into the Mustang wasn't a 240sx motor, it came out of an FD RX-7.
subireza 2 years ago
Stop giving rx7 drivers a bad name. it wasnt a rotary engine going into the Mustang it was out of the stacked 240sx from the first car park drifting scene.
GhostWKD 2 years ago
I'm not giving the RX7 drivers a bad name, I'm correcting a retard. I apologize, I haven't seen the movie in a year, I thought they took it out of the wide bodied RX7, I have no idea why I thought that. He thinks it's gay to put an LS1 in an FC/FD, which isn't. It's a light chassis, why not throw an SBC in it?
subireza 2 years ago
Ok my appologies in that case. Nah it came out of the "mona lisa" silvia :) The V8 FD's are awesome, and have their own appeal alongside the rotary engines. Personally i love the way it drives with a relatively stock engine and on twins but can appreciate others prefer big single turbos and triple rotors etc. :)
GhostWKD 2 years ago
who gives a shit i dont pay attention to rice any ways!
valerianspeed 2 years ago
Yup, an RX7 with an LS1 is completely rice. You are so correct. Go suck your sisters dick you fag.

Actually it was a nissian Silvia

Dude, it was a Nissan Skyline RB26 straight six. But the guy has a point. This is like that, taking an american car and mating it with a japanese engine, and taking a japanese car and mating it with an american engine.
ToxicNONESENSE94 2 years ago
Picture this scenario, some redneck is laughing at a 240sx, then the guy in the 240 revs it, and it has an LS1. Could you imagine the look on that hicks face?
subireza 2 years ago
correct me if im wrong but was it not an RB26DET out of a skyline? pretty sure it was.
ThPresidentsays 2 years ago
Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having an RX7?
sdlausen 2 years ago
Amen!
31compton13 2 years ago
No, it doesn't. The point of having an RX7 is to enjoy it. It's a gorgeous car. It's light. Why not put a SBC in it?
subireza 2 years ago
He wanted a fast car. Rx7 with a rotary doesn't cut it!
aji8 2 years ago
actually i do know about the fact that rotaries are indeed crap and a bitch to maintain but like i sed earlier, its the fact that its unique in which keeps others from swapping it. its a different type of engine. Although i probably wuldnt drive it daily, id still take a 13b over the swap. Its just that sum ppl perfer something unique like a rotary. and just because i dont have 1 doesnt mean i can't research. I still haven't driven my rsx and i still no a fair amount of info about its engine.
datazncarl 2 years ago
Solid proof in this vid that the LS1 is a great engine for the Rx7 v.s. the crap rotary.

I love LS1 motor swaps. Someone near me has a 1998 BMW 3-series with an LS1 in it.
Dennissays 2 years ago
Yet another nicely swapped LSX-RX7, I really do hate the fact that people can't be more open minded about this sort of thing, don't get me wrong the Rotary Engine these cars came with is a marvel of engineering... But it's quite unreliable, gets terrible gas mileage, The LSX swap is the way to go for these cars, better gas mileage, higher power potential, much more reliable... I'd love to have 2 of these, one with an LSX engine and the other with the rotary, so I can have both worlds...
sn0wMan13 2 years ago 3
where in jersey are you . i would like to take a look at this ls1 rx7.. i saw giant stadium behind you . i didnt even know they did this kind of stuff there.. i live liek five minutes away from there

All you people wondering about the ls1 swaps in an rx7.... This type have swap has been around ever since the car has... Light weight car, big v-8 makes for easy 10's in the 1/4....
racedude1984 3 years ago
i no rotarys are a pain in the ass because of maintenance but y a v8 in a 7? thats a waste. but hey, at least it gives other car owners the 13b theyve always wanted so i guess it culd be a win 4 every1
datazncarl 3 years ago
lmao go read on the ls1 you tool.......your a raicer if you think that car isnt better
dectrone 3 years ago
psh this swap culdnt handle a touge 4 shit. do u even no wat a ricer is? dont judge ppl u dont no u fckin fag. id do this swap if i only did drag but i dont, so in my opinion, its not the best swap for me. stop talking shit about others just bcuz they arent like u.
datazncarl 3 years ago
do you know anything about this swap? ls1 weighs the same as a 20b...
kokonutz1234 3 years ago
Possibly weighs less since it's aluminium vs cast iron. I love both the rotary and LS motors but in the long run, I would just go with an LS motor swap. Honestly this ignorant anti V8 anti rotary shit makes everyone arguing the points sound like a bunch of homos. Get a grip people and stop with the black and white and step into the gray. Fuck.
MegaTronn 3 years ago 3
i agree with u 100 percent if a person is a true car enthusiast they would like a car like this and others i mean its hard sticking to one car brand i mean look at my screen name lol
vtecboi18 2 years ago
what isnt better about this swap over the original? i like rotarys but with this swap you lose a little weight, gain about double the hp. you get about the same, slightly faster, low end acceleration and alot lot better mid and high. so it couldnt handle as good cause it weighs about the same or becuase it accelerates harder out of the turns? im not sure im following.
spartan177saber 2 years ago
yes the ls1 is better for hp i guess but in terms of handling, it's a bad choice.
