  • very very melodious, showman at his best Uncle Clapton :)

  • Clapton ripped of Goldie Looking Chain "your mothers got a penis" for this song, he travelled to the future in his time machine that he bought form the royalties of "wonderful tonight" and nicked it off them.

  • Collins kicks ass!

  • Clapton you utter legend! <3

  • Rubbish comparing to Phillinganes, MJ or even the original music

  • this is a yellow magic orchestra song 1st. and what was midge ure wearing ???? well it was the 80's i s,pose lol., and clapton make afew boobs whoops! glad he's back on form nowadays.

  • @manician2323 I am pretty sure boobs and such can be associated to him still being a heroin addict during this period. Thank God he is clean now !!!

  • Inspiring performance on bass by Mark King. As usual Phil Collins appears to be knocking together a shed!

  • ユキヒロの歌い方に慣れた私にはどこか新鮮でいいなぁ~♪

  • Ta for posting!

  • I STILL THINK PHIL COLLINS IS A CUNT

  • @SuperPissflaps hahaha

  • omg just snorted my tea at your name rotfl and eric clapton 1st ... micheals is awesome too

  • @covmiss1 im glad it made your day

  • @SuperPissflaps Clapton is much more of a cunt, he stole George Harrison's girl. Tony Hancock is a fellow cunt. Fuck them all, cunce.

  • im confused..who is the original artist? Michael Jackson did this one too..

  • @arlynnemjfan Mj is the artist, he rewrote and recorded it in the early 80's, he didn't release it though, clapton did later.

  • This is the best EC at his best.

  • 皆ノリノリだな

  • is that midge ure on guitar?

  • dang he ruined the YMO original

  • こういう、ものすごいポテンシャルを持った曲だったんだな。

    BEHIND THE MASK。

    エリック・クラプトンのカバーもいいし、マイケル・ジャクソンのカバーもいい。

  • Baseplayer for Level42?

  • I like the song, not heard much by clapton but want to listen to more songs so which ones should i give a listen too.

  • @DCFC79 The Calling with santana is awesome, off the supernatural album.

  • oh eric screwed the solo some seconds hahhah! but he is the best :D 4:13 :)))

  • michael jacskson does a better version

  • G WIZ ITS NOT LIKE THAT THESE DAYS IS IT , THAT WAS AMAZING !!!!!

  • CHRIS MOSDEL wrote this song, lyrics,I wonder how they met togther,SAKAMOTO

  • When I found out this wasn't actually Clapton's song I started to wonder why he he is considered so highly. He is a cunt who got off with George Harrison's wife. Cunt. People go on about how great Tony Hancock is, to me he is just the same, a cunt. So was George Best. I shall forever remember George Best as a cunt.

  • Phil Collins is tremendous drummer, what ever you think his singing.

  • There is probably a goofy, off-topic argument on every single video on Youtube. Unbelievable.

  • @gtrrs71 talking of goofy and off-topic, I went to the shops and decided not to get a newspaper, I thought about getting some butter, as the butter I have has a bit of mould under the lid, but I didn't. I ended up scraping the mould off, but then decided that butter tubs don't need lids anyway, and I discarded the lid.

  • @Spankabuttux You are not alone, I find that creamier/higher fat butters start attracting mould the moment a few toast crumbs drop in there. Even when you remove the mouldy crumbs, the butter itself keeps going green!

  • @GerbilEssences Yes, you are right, I'm so sick of breadcrumbs making my butter go off...bastards!

  • Grandioso!!! Magistral!!! Exceleeeeeente!!! El gran Eric Clapton...jajaja y Phill Collins que hacia tocando la batería??? Buena tonada!!!

  • who is that playing the bas?

    isn't he from level 42?

  • @MrGoodMusic2 Yip, Mark King. :)

  • Been trying to figure out who the Guitarist is with the cap on. Pete Townshend (The Who). He was doing alot of great solo work at the time.

  • @simonhamid

    That's Midge Ure

  • Yes... that is definitely Mark 'The' King on bass. Love Level 42, and he is one of the best funky 'slap' bassists there is. There are some great vids of him on here... but if you knew it was him, you already knew that.

  • Is that Mark King on bass?

  • ik,hou,niet,van,alice,clooper,die,doet,scary,eric,clapton,is,goed,bay,ik,wil,even,op,bank,nog,alone

  • ik,hou,niet,van,alice,clooper,die,doet,scary

  • I like this version more than ymo's.

  • This fuckin song rocks!!!!

  • Jools Holland on Piano.......

  • I like this version, and Michael's too! (:

  • The Last Mystery... SOLVED! That means though that I can die now... :(

  • Eric Clapton's version is good, but he sounds like an angry alcoholic when he sings

  • i can't believe that 3 shitbirds don't like this

  • This is the worst thing I have ever seen or heard done to any song in history.

  • @ihatethefuture You've not seen Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby?

  • This is pure magic. All those superstars in one spot. Would have loved to be at that show! Damn I love 80s music! That the dude from Level 42 on bass?

  • @deeKindle Yeah, Mark King.

  • @deeKindle Yes! His name is Mark King! He's an amazing bassist! :)

  • To all you people who say Michael Jackson's version is better, I bear you no ill-will but would like to mention a couple of points:

1- referring to Michael Jackson as 'Michael' does not mean you were ever a close friend of his, and reminds others of the way the kids in Moonwalker would say it(i.e. as if talking about Jesus)

2-Michael Jackson didn't even sing 'his' version of this song(I don't have a lawyer, but I'm not scared).

  • @Spankabuttux He did sing it he wrote it in 1979 and recorded it in 1983 and im sure there would have been deomo versions

  • @Jamesthealienfreak Michael Jackson did not write this song.

  • @Spankabuttux He did: "Behind the Mask" was a track from Yellow Magic Orchestra's 1979 album Solid State Survivor It was the first studio recording of this song, although YMO had played it live the previous year. In 1980, the song was released as a single in UK with B-side "Yellow Magic (Tong Poo)".[1]

The keyboardist of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the writer of the song Ryuichi Sakamoto, re-recorded the song in 1987 with Michael Jackson's additional lyrics and lead vocals by Bernard Fowler.

  • @Jamesthealienfreak I appreciate the civility of your tone, which is very rare on internet discussions, so respect to you for that. It seems our difference of opinion stems from what 'writing a song' means. My opinion is that YMO 'wrote' this song, and MJ didn't add enough to be called the writer of this song.

  • @Spankabuttux lol thank you its probably because im english, anyway MJ just added the ''other singing parts'' not the chorus which is the robot voice. Your right that he wasnt the original creater/writer of the song.

  • @Jamesthealienfreak Let's all just hug and say we're ALL right! This song rocks whether it is performed by EC or MJ....andthisisthebestversion, there, we have agreed. No more to be said.

  • @Spankabuttux when you added something to a song whether it's only a few lines, you are given credit. just like 'we are the world' 95% of the song is written by mj but lionel richie shared the credit for the two lines he added to the song. but you're rite i dont call him writer of the song but it's more like he remade the song.

  • @foreverneverO7 "We are the World" is a crock of shit, and do you genuinely believe Michael Jackson sat down and wrote that song? Seriously? I'd imagine a song written by MJ to be along the lines of; "Ooh, Jesus was good, but I am better than Jesus; hey kids, come to me, I'll give you Jesus Juice, as long as you let me touch you, if you tell your parents, you are being unjesussy"

  • @Spankabuttux we are the world is very popular regardless of if it's a crock of shit or not. lol it's better to have a 'popular crock of shit' than to have an 'unknown gem', dont u agree? haha.

  • @foreverneverO7 Absolutely not. 'Haha'?, wanker.

  • @Spankabuttux hahaaaaaahaaha. imbecile.

  • @foreverneverO7 Your argument is it is better to have a 'popular crock of shit' than an 'unknown gem', your words. Why are you laughing, is it because you just found the perfect word to describe yourself?

  • @Spankabuttux - You probably thing Lady Gaga is a man too... People love to eat what they're fed by empty, uneducated assumption. We know nothing of these people apart from their public image, yet we're so quick to judge what lies beneath. Think for yourself rather than buying what the media sells to you.

  • @TheScorpion667 I would throw that right back at you; there is a child molestation charge in the 80's, MJ buys it off out of court. Many others occur, one of which is so descriptive that it can only be him (can you think of anyone else with a stripy black and white penis?). I consider it beyond doubt that he was a kiddie fiddler, you desperately clutch for decency. I worry some deluded morons see him as a new Christ figure.

  • @Spankabuttux - Of course you and I would rather go to court to prove our innocence rather than pay... but think of it from his perspective: THE biggest star in the world, Just broken a world record, all eyes are watching. Michael was never much of a public speaker, that's obvious, speaking wasn't his forté... but to taint an image with such a heavy worldwide pressure hanging over your shoulders... You could do anything in that sort of situation and there'll still be people there to criticise.

  • @TheScorpion667 And you could do the worst thing in the world and there will always be people to mop up the mess, describe you as Messiah and worship you forever. He said he only had one surgical procedure, do you honestly believe that? The 'Leave Me Alone' video is an absolute joke, as all those media stories were leaked by his own media people. 'They Don't Care About Us' was a hypocritical joke of a position to take. I accept he was messed up, but poor people get messed up too, and go to jail.

  • @Spankabuttux Yes, he did...

  • I think I see Jools as well on the clip.

  • Michael's version trumps this version fo sho.

    My opinion.

  • Damn, I've listened to all 4 versions now, and this song rocks by all who've performed it. It's just one hell of a song. I must admit I love Michael's version the most though. He knew a good thing when he heard it. The sax in Michael's version is pure sex. Add that to his vocals, and I'm good to go.

  • guys quit comparing the michael jackson version and the eric clapton version. They're both amazing and magical in their own way.

  • actually, Phill Collins copies the drum part of what Yukihiro Takahashis original technique, especially a very first part. go and watch YMO vids in early 80s.

  • @kenichisaitohchenii

Yukihiro Takahashi is an underrated drummer. While he's been overshadowed by his fellow YMO band members Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono, Takahashi was in fact a big influence on drummers in the early 80s. For example, the influential British band "Japan" credited Takahashi as a big influence on their drummer.

  • Imagine if a guy who loved Clapton when he was with John Mayall had been kidnapped by Somali pirates for 20 years. He is released and as a treat you take him to see his idol in concert. He'd buy a boat and start sailing up and down the Somali coast again.

  • @baaford made me laugh so hard

  • @BigFatMan 幸宏のパクリです。こっそりやらかしてます、彼。

  • Maaaaan listen to the version of Michael Jackson and you will hear THE MAGIC! Sorry, but compared to Michael, this one reaaaalllllyyyyy sucks!!!!

  • @soundclubb I can't go along with you on that. I think this is a fine performance. It's just a hard song to do live. Having said that, IMHO the studio version that Eric on his "August" album sounds twice as good as this one.

  • Was this a big hit single in England & Europe? I don't remember it ever being played on American radio. Such a shame cuz it's a Great song.

  • @vodude it will get popular again since its on michael jacksons new album

  • what a good band

  • The back-up dancers in this were and are clearly awesome.

They were so enthusiastic and energetic in this song's entire performance herein.

  • So cooool!!!!!!

  • Michael Jackson wrote the lyric for this music and offered Ryuichi Sakamoto of YMO accepting only 50% of the royalty. Sakamoto refused it at that time. But shortly after, the album 'Thriller' was released and Sakamoto regreted his decision. Cos Thriller became the best-selling album in the world. He talked this story on a radio program.

  • 出だしのスネアをユキヒロと同じように叩く、フィル・コリンズがたまらん。

  • @BodyFatMan wtf?

  • @BodyFatMan 確かにちょっと高橋幸宏ぽい気もしないでもないかも…

  • This video was only incredible until I noticed Level 42's Mark King on bass. That just tripled the awesome.

  • My favourite song of ALL time

  • Original YMO track = sublime, pioneering, uniquel.

    This= hammy, excessive, toss!

Session musician crap at its worst. There's nothing bad about being able to play your instruments well, but when you play like this you deserve to be taken down! Clapton and his ilk been getting away with it for too long.

  • Shoulder pads.

  • lol kanye west on the back vocals?

  • is that pete in the hat

  • thank you guys - Devongreenlanes and Atownhr23

  • It's Midge Ure playing the pink guitar!!

    Brilliant player

  • who is playing the pink guitar ?

  • @abdell2222 Looks like Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick. That's my guess based on the hat at least.

  • @smithhedgehog, That is Mark King on bass ,Bass God!!!! Stellar!!!!!

  • Awesoem song love it, cant say ive heard much of clapton but maybe ill listen to more of his music, i listen to absolute radio so maybe ill catch more on there

  • Total class - what an 80's super group!

  • Love the song...it has a real life meaning for me....

  • This is from the 1987 Prince's Trust concert at (I think) Wembley Arena. I know because I still have the whole concert that my dad recorded off the TV on VHS somewhere.

  • wow, not only jools holland on keys, but david attenborough on bass! ;-)

  • Is this Knebworth?

  • My fave Clapton song and yet never on any of his best of/greatest hits compilations

  • @MrEurominx I agree - there was something surreal about it, and you could definitely hear the style that named him "Slowhand" (not exactly on this version, but the album). Just glad I finally figured out the name of this song, it has been driving me bloody crazy.

  • Wow!!! Clapton covering YMO legendary song. >_>

  • @DeathToNewbie what year did YMO do this? Clapton did this in the eighties

  • @ianbillericay 1979 to be exact.

  • Great song! Thanks for upping :-)

  • mark king is great bass player

  • @sgprint this is a Yellow Magic Orchestra song. :)

  • @Cruijff111 yeah but this is an awful cover

  • @Cruijff111 music maybe lyrics are eric clapton.....

  • Comment removed

  • @sgprint actually michael jackson wrote these lyrics, he was originally going to record it for thriller but it didn't make the album. greg phillinganes (keyboard player on thriller) recorded it for his second album and suggested it to eric clapton when they were recording autumn. michael jackson's lyrics are based on chris mosdell's lyrics for the original song. that's a convoluted history!

  • thats right ur mothers got a penis!!! As sampled by G.L.C

  • Clapton's jacket just screams; "look at me. I'm Eric Clapton, I can play the guitar in my sleep and it just so happens that it's the 80's"

  • Hey Jimmy Helms is on backing vocal with his LB members & how cool is Phil Collins :-)

  • And of course..... the excellent Mark Brzezicki on the other drumset.

  • one of my mates fave songs rip greyham noaks xx

  • dont you just hate singing drummers

  • Good good ,with Collins on drums also....But i like Sakamoto best^^

  • @Ymofangirl1972 Phil Collins is still a legend

  • top tune classic

  • fantastic buts let not forget the reason behind this and layla and wonderfull tonight and countless others miss pattie boyd ultimate muse....

  • @sgprint too bad clapton didnt write this song, its a cover of yellow magic orchestra.

  • Awesome! :)

  • FUCK PHIL COLLINS

  • Michael Jackson wrote this song, and is that Phil Collins on the drums???

  • It was actually written by Yellow Magic Orchestra and Michael Jackson/Quincy Jones re penned some of the lyrics. Greg Phillinganes who was Jackson's keyboard player at the time released his own version and this is a re-recording of that version. So in reality Jackson only had a little bit to do with the lyrics of one version the record rather than writing it outright. No one is sure whether the Jackson version still exists. And it is Phil Collins on drums!

  • @Perseusishere And its Jools Holland on the piano!

  • @Perseusishere it still exists. how do you like it?

  • ...and on bass my guitar legend of all time...Mr Mark King !

  • Backing vocals: Jimmy Helms, George Chandler and Jimmy Chambers, who went on to form Londonbeat in 1988.

  • Backing vocals for the Prince's Trust Concert of thar year: Tessa Niles, Katie Kissoon and Nathan East (who was playing a five-string Fodera Emperor).

Mark Knopfler replaces Midge Ure on rhythm guitar. Elton John on piano as a replacement for Jools Holland. Eric plays his signature Fender guitar fitted with a 22-fret neck built by Michael Stevens. Steve Ferrone on drums, Greg Phillinganes and Alan Clark on synthesizers.

  • The guitarist in the cap looks like Midge Ure to me. In fact this looks like a Prince's Trust concert. Midge was musical director of the concerts at the time. In fact even Clapton himself referred to him as "the boss".

  • Who is the guitarist wearing a cap?

    Rick Nielsen?

  • Midge Ure.

I prefer the RAH version featuring dIRE sTRAITS' frontman Mark Knopfler playing the rhythm guitar parts with his Pensa MK1 guitar.

  • SUPERB & AWESOME

    já, já, já.........jijijijij

  • the mistake eric made at 4.15 made me feel much better as a guitar player!!! eric your awesome!!!!

  • 80s, the best, awesome! This is real music! :)

  • would of like to hear the michael jackson version

  • Is that a rather svelte looking Jools Holland on the keyboard?!?

  • I do believe it is.

  • Yes.

Jools has been replaced by Elton John the following year.

  • @shermer75 yes its jools, if it isnt ill be damned, its a very good likeness if it isnt

  • Did you know Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins all collaborated together on "Behind the Mask" back in 1983? (Jackson wrote the tune and lyrics along with Chris Mosdell and Ryuichi Sakamoto.)

  • MJ i didn't find anything about him..

  • No, because it is not true.

  • Yes it is, look it up!!!

  • The song was written by the leader of the Yellow Magic Orchestra.

As the story goes, Michael first heard "Behind the Mask" and wanted to redo it with lyrics. The original was an instrumental. Michael and Greg Philliganes put words to it and Greg sang it. Later on it was covered by Eric on one of his CD's.

  • The comporser, not a leader, though, Sakamoto sang this with bocorder. YMO original version LYRIC Now the mask you're wearing Is stoney and staring Lines and tears Age and fears Growing old Passions cold Is it me Is it you Behind this mask, I ask Is it me Is it you Who wears another face There's nothing in your eyes That marks where you cried All is blank All is blind Dead inside The inner mind
  • The composer and the leader of YMO, Sakamoto, wrote the music to Behind the Mask...Like I said, Behind the Mask was instrumental before Mosdell wrote lyrics to the song...Greg P and MJ heard the instrumental version and wrote lyrics to that, which is the version that Eric is covering!!!

  • The leader is Harry Hosono, not Sakamoto.

  • Go to Wikipedia...It says he formed the internationally successful synthpop trio Yellow Magic Orchestra, with Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi...Call him what you want...Leader, composer, whatever!!!...In your world the leader is Hosono...In mine, it's Sakamoto!!!

  • What kind of Wiki you have? Hosono is founder. Look into Haruomi Hosono Wikipedia.

  • The same as yours...Look under Sakamoto's Wiki!!!

  • @phillyproduct125

It was Hosono who founded the band YMO, not Sakamoto. It was Hosono who invited both Sakamoto and Takahashi to form the band and it was Hosono who was the producer for YMO's debut album in 1978. No one was the "leader", but all three were equals in the band, with Takahashi as lead vocalist and drummer, Hosono as bassist and producer, and Sakamoto as keyboardist (and sometimes vocalist).

  • Sakamoto, wrote the music to Behind the Mask...Leader, composer, whatever, who cares!!!...Your Wiki says one thing, mine says different...SO WHAT!!!...The whole point is Behind the Mask was instrumental before Mosdell wrote lyrics to Sakamoto's instrumental...Greg P and MJ heard the instrumental that Sakamoto wrote, which is the version that Eric is covering!!!

  • Go on YouTube and look up Greg Philliganes singing Behind the Mask with the lyrics written by him and MJ...Again, the original was instrumental written by Ryuichi Sakamoto of Yellow Magic Orchestra!!!

  • The music is written by Ryuichi Sakamoto (YMO), but the original had lyrics too..... written by Mosdell. Its on the YMO album Solid State Survivour from 1979.

  • Greg covered Yellow Magic Orchestra's song "Behind the Mask" (with additional lyrics written by Michael Jackson). This single was much more successful on the Dance music charts. When he later joined Eric Clapton's backing band, Phillinganes would introduce the tune to Clapton, who covered it on his 1986 August album.

  • Behind The Mask was originally released in sept 1979 on the album Solid State Survivour by Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Music by Sakamoto and lyrics by Mosdell.

  • @phillyproduct125

Actually, MJ, Clapton and Collins had nothing to do with the original version of the song. The original version was produced way back in 1978 by YMO, written by member Ryuichi Sakamoto, as an instrumental. In 1979, Chris Mosdell added lyrics which were sung by Sakamoto through a vocoder, and released in their 1979 album "Solid State Survivor". And then around 1980-1982, MJ added some more lyrics, which were included in all later versions of the song.
