  • Boots faster than Vista.

  • I used these in Gr.11 and even wrote some BASIC programs for them, and naturally played some games. We had just the one with a different, smaller, generic monitor along with the HELIOS II 8" floppy drive, and the drive was *always* breaking down. Somewhere in my vast pile of crap I have all the manuals for the system which were given to me by our school when the SOL was cashiered in favour of 8K Commodore PETs and later Commodore CBM4032s.

  • now make it run Minecraft

  • @mariofan101

    GOOD IDEA

  • it's like the computer from that show LOST that they found in the "hatch"

  • @KlingonSpider That was an apple actually! Surprised they bothered to get a real 70s machine, most times when an "old computer" is needed they just use a 90s one and pretend.

  • @KlingonSpider

    CORRECT AS WELL

  • The original fallout teminal!! :D

  • @alphabraindawgs

    CORRECT

  • Windows 7 ?????

  • @EvgeniyUK Classic mode

  • will it play crysis? hehe ,love these old computers, 64k is quite impressive for a 70's computer! my old speccy had 48k in 1982 and even that was 96k of chip that were only using half of the ic (they used faulty chips to keep the cost down!) all schools should have these computers, they are a big part of our history now.

  • Wonderful.... This is the invention of computer......good one

  • i also am sometimes naked behind the computer but then i dont make videos and post it to youtube :-)

  • thats kinda confusing O.O

  • im not quite whats going on in this video but i appreciate this dude enthusiasm lol looks like a beautiful piece of vintage tech, i think i may read about it, thanks ipscone

  • is DUMP another word for deleting something?

  • It was one of the first complete personal computer systems on the market. User Dinoferrosaurus was lucky enough to get a hold of four of them!

  • 0:21 - Isn't it supposed to be a bad idea to power anything on and off rapidly like that?

  • @ImantaBabite On such an old computer it's probably fine...

  • you can write this monitor program in about 2 hours...i just love the idea of a program that helps you programming in machine language haha

  • but where is tron?

  • I think similar technology was used on the Deathstar XD

Anyway, thats looks more futuristic than the computers we use today. I like it!

  • GLaDOS 1.1?Seriosly...

  • hmm what would happen if you were to put a 1 gig sit of ram and a pentium cpu in it?

  • I wonder if i can fit a mp3 on 2K of RAM..... Nop doesnt work......

  • Reminds me of the computer off lost where they enter the code. =D

  • really cool. i am currently building a replica of a altair 8800.

    very exciting stuff :-)

    thanks for this great video

  • wow I'd like such a computer, can you load some form of BASIC in it? as long as it can run text-based adventure games, potential for great entertainment is there in my bok : D

  • That screen is easter to turn on than my current 24" Wide LCD screen from Samsung.

  • If u have any questions bout intel proccesers ask me I work in develepment and we are producing a eight core procceser it can run 7000 MHz so fast it can load 1 gega bite a minute but it reqires liquid helium to keep cool haha absolute zero temp crazy shit we already have six core but it won't be produced for a year .

  • Lmao look at ur piece of shit my computer has a six core procceser haha intel it's a prototype since I work in develepment with intel haha I'm jus messin tho I actualy take pride in old pieces of machinery like this.... Just wish we had laser solder gunz back then ...we could have already produced 40 core proccesers by now...

  • OMG ITS GLaDOS!

  • I'm afraid to ask what SOL stands for...

  • would this run dos?

  • Could you be able to run CP/M on this from a floppy disk (I'm assuming yes, by executing the floppy controller's ROM address from the monitor, provided there was such a controller for the SOL-20)?

  • Wow, FAST boot-up!

  • :[] holy oldness

  • OMG!! I'm so jealous! xD

  • Very interesting. But... why are you naked?

  • That system was 64K? The bits of all the lower addresses (from 0 to a little over 8192). Where is the TEXT page stored, the keyboard, stack?

  • It runs actualy pretty good as i see

  • that monitor also looks like some vintage TV's. :-)

  • Hehe, full of high level bits on the dump.

I love hex codes. Children should be taught with the hex number system in the elementaries, but that's just me. If anyone asks me, we should switch to hex from decimal already. xD

  • cool

  • doesn't do much bit is very fast!

  • this is the definition of instant on computer :)

  • Great restoration job, looks new. Its good to see some of the oldies up and running.

  • Those old PC terminals came with a lead vest like they make you wear when you get an X-Ray :)

  • Thanks for positing this video, and increasing awareness of this very important computer. I had the pleasure of meeting Lee Felsenstein at the Computer History Museum in California during their Commodore 64 Anniversary festivities. He, Bob Marsh, and Gordon French deserve the same honor that is bestowed upon the likes of Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates.

  • Awesome. I'm surprised how functional this was. 64K of RAM is surprisingly good, too!

I bet it would be great fun to program.

  • i bet that thing can play crysis very high with 4x aa

  • hahaha how bout 16x? damn

  • c16xq

  • that'd destroy the retro aspect!

  • Very nice old computer. The touch-switch for the monitor is interesting! And it turns on *instantly*! The 8080 was a great predecessor to the 8086/8088.

  • Also, someone made a free program for Windows that emulates this computer. I use it and it's awesome!

  • sweet, it uses one of those touch to switch buttons that were used in everything back then

  • Cool.

  • is there a chance to get BASIC for it? would be much more useful than that, just sitting there spitting out the contents of memory registers.

  • cp/m

  • I would ebay that. Even the ic`s and vintage componets bring in alot!

  • wonder what system that runs?

  • System? :-) It uses an 8080 microprocessor running at 2MHz. It's brain was a 2K ROM with a primative monitor program that could DUMP memory, save and load programs from cassette. No bios or OS to speak of except this 2K of ROM.

  • @ipscone

You could put a disk interface on it and run CP/M.

  • wow, it looks like a little TV glued to a keyboard, love it!

  • I love that comment... It is pretty much just that... with an 8080 processor running at 2MHz in the keyboard. In fact, the SOL was originally designed to be a CRTless terminal.

  • I know I was born in 1970 so this funny too me:)

  • Great :D I picked up my SOL at a local containerpark. It's working fine but i'm still in search of a decent monitor instead of the tweaked Amiga monitor i'm using now. :P

  • can i check my myspace on it

  • it would require a lot of modification, and even when its working it will be very slow.

  • *sigh* good ol logic :S

  • Fantasic. A real computer. Dont you just love the clunkyness of old keyboards :)

  • Dude! finaly someone who knows what a good typing feel comes from!

  • it for word processing

  • What is this computer good for? Remember i had some Comodore and Sinclair Spectrum when i was a kid. Can you play games on this machine?

  • It's a 30-year old 'Vintage' computer, a contemporary of the Altair 8800 and IMSAI-8080.

It use an Intel 8080 Processor,so you could run CP/M and other character-based operating systems.

It could be expended with S-100 cards, so you could add color graphics and other features.

  • AWESOME!!
