I used these in Gr.11 and even wrote some BASIC programs for them, and naturally played some games. We had just the one with a different, smaller, generic monitor along with the HELIOS II 8" floppy drive, and the drive was *always* breaking down. Somewhere in my vast pile of crap I have all the manuals for the system which were given to me by our school when the SOL was cashiered in favour of 8K Commodore PETs and later Commodore CBM4032s.
@KlingonSpider That was an apple actually! Surprised they bothered to get a real 70s machine, most times when an "old computer" is needed they just use a 90s one and pretend.
will it play crysis? hehe ,love these old computers, 64k is quite impressive for a 70's computer! my old speccy had 48k in 1982 and even that was 96k of chip that were only using half of the ic (they used faulty chips to keep the cost down!) all schools should have these computers, they are a big part of our history now.
im not quite whats going on in this video but i appreciate this dude enthusiasm lol looks like a beautiful piece of vintage tech, i think i may read about it, thanks ipscone
wow I'd like such a computer, can you load some form of BASIC in it? as long as it can run text-based adventure games, potential for great entertainment is there in my bok : D
If u have any questions bout intel proccesers ask me I work in develepment and we are producing a eight core procceser it can run 7000 MHz so fast it can load 1 gega bite a minute but it reqires liquid helium to keep cool haha absolute zero temp crazy shit we already have six core but it won't be produced for a year .
Lmao look at ur piece of shit my computer has a six core procceser haha intel it's a prototype since I work in develepment with intel haha I'm jus messin tho I actualy take pride in old pieces of machinery like this.... Just wish we had laser solder gunz back then ...we could have already produced 40 core proccesers by now...
Could you be able to run CP/M on this from a floppy disk (I'm assuming yes, by executing the floppy controller's ROM address from the monitor, provided there was such a controller for the SOL-20)?
I love hex codes. Children should be taught with the hex number system in the elementaries, but that's just me. If anyone asks me, we should switch to hex from decimal already. xD
Thanks for positing this video, and increasing awareness of this very important computer. I had the pleasure of meeting Lee Felsenstein at the Computer History Museum in California during their Commodore 64 Anniversary festivities. He, Bob Marsh, and Gordon French deserve the same honor that is bestowed upon the likes of Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates.
Very nice old computer. The touch-switch for the monitor is interesting! And it turns on *instantly*! The 8080 was a great predecessor to the 8086/8088.
System? :-) It uses an 8080 microprocessor running at 2MHz. It's brain was a 2K ROM with a primative monitor program that could DUMP memory, save and load programs from cassette. No bios or OS to speak of except this 2K of ROM.
I love that comment... It is pretty much just that... with an 8080 processor running at 2MHz in the keyboard. In fact, the SOL was originally designed to be a CRTless terminal.
Great :D I picked up my SOL at a local containerpark. It's working fine but i'm still in search of a decent monitor instead of the tweaked Amiga monitor i'm using now. :P
Boots faster than Vista.

It's a 30-year old 'Vintage' computer, a contemporary of the Altair 8800 and IMSAI-8080.
It use an Intel 8080 Processor,so you could run CP/M and other character-based operating systems.
It could be expended with S-100 cards, so you could add color graphics and other features.
