the teacher is not being rude at all, just 'strict', this kind of teacher is at the same time a 'gentle giant' and he will give praise to the student when 'it is due' and when it comes it will feel like the best gift in life to that student, one that's not taken for 'granted' and one he will remember 'forever' and cherish. Also this kind of teacher is indeed one who will show respect indeed all of the time (my teacher does), just because he corrects mistakes does not mean he de-respects me
what this 'great teacher' is doing with this 'great student' here is 'not' insulting the student nor mistreating him in any way....please...some of you don't understand I think, I have a teacher just like this and I owe him my own weight in gold (and I weigh a LOT! LOL), what the teacher is merely doing is not letting this student get away with the slightest 'hair' of imperfection in every millisecond of his playing and in every slight movement he makes. It is called 'be cruel to be kind' :)
@chystokletov no, its some russian law that wont let you get certain pieces unless you live in russia, I don't understand it really. But do you know if this piece is possible to get in america?
I never heard of that "russian law", which piece you can't find "unless you leave in Russia"...I'm russian pianist, working in Vietnam for the past 15 years and I can find almost anything from here...therefore the only law i could think of is copyright.
So for you kids should stay home watching tv ,computergames and eating mac donalds? Did it ever occure to you that he acctually liked learning playing the violin. And (russian) kids are strong and intelligent. They know its for there good and they know that they will be rewarded later. And whats so hard about it? he just repeats untill its correct ....its basics of learning things. For some people its 100 times worse learning maths all day at school as learning an instrument.
I think you missed my point. I wasn't saying "kids shouldn't learn music because it's too hard", I said "teachers shouldn't treat their pupils like that".
There are many excellent teachers out there who treat kids with due caution, and many great musicians who weren't insulted and belittled every time they got a note wrong. This is not the only way, is what I'm saying here.
Dear teenager. I just hope that by the time you have kids to send to a music school the teachers will not be allowed to emotionally abuse their pupils anymore.
Sincerely, the person who mentioned that it is scarring to be taught like that, and you called him idiot because you have never thought of it this way.
@damshek I am 47 a professional violinist who received vigorous tuition from an early age, i have a 22 year old son who is also a professional musician.
Your remark is the unthought out one as you have based it on several assumptions about me which are unfounded. Quite a dim thing to do really lol Also, anyone who knows Vadim will tell you that what you are saying about him being scarred, is quite laughable.
Well, if you are 47, you must understand the difference between me criticizing the teaching methods I saw in a Youtube video, and you telling me PERSONALLY that my life experiences were "10 a penny".
Also, I didn't say anything about the personal well being of Vadim Repin. That wasn't my point.
I merely suggested that yelling on a child like that might not be appropriate, ESPECIALLY in the context of music.
@damshek: This kind of teaching is a way wich works. Tell us how someone should complete the task of mastering the violin without a strict teacher in his early days. I dont know if you know what a great present it is wich Bron gave Repin! And I am sure Repin knows that aswell as any other musician who once studied with a great teacher with a strict teaching. Being rude as a teacher is not fun, but its necessary for success. Maybe Bron was an Angel compared to Repins Parents.. think about..
Fantastic playing!! I have a record of Repin playing both of the Krennikov Violin Concertos, it is amazing....but to see him on here is just incredible. While listening to the record, I forgot that he was this young when he made the recording.
This footage is an unbelievable miracle!!! So glad I heard Vadim Repin and met him in person at Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts a few years ago. Teachers have great influence! What a perfectionist his teacher Zakar Bron is. This attitude is needed when helping students reach their full potential.

The lesson part is PAINFUL to watch. This is child abuse, plain and simple.
I speak Russian. He is berating him on every note. I'm not sure this is music at all- It's more like circus training. Like Chinese gymnasts.
Don't care if it's Zakar Bron. Don't care that Repin is a world renowned violinist.
Honestly, I don't even care how pretty the music is at the end. No child should go through this.
I speak from experience, as a former violin prodigy myself.
damshek 1 year ago
@damshe Violin prodigies are 10 a penny, very few develop succesful adult careers.
If the teaching was damaging to Repin, then why is it that he is such a well rounded and funny person?
