There are those that would feel unmoved by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or Andre Bocelli (sp?) at their best! Simon, I am moved & excited by your voice & delivery! I found you via Vance Perry & Mike Beck. To be part of a crowd like that, your talents are no small potatoes, my brother! Please, please, oh please give us more full length presentations. The world truly does need more of this kind of sweet, pure music!
Love it, love it, love it. Great job, very entertaining....great voice, great look, wonderful spirit. Thank you for your efforts and for sharing this with the YouTube community! I will order your new CD.
Simon, don't listen to the idiots. This is fab work, my friend! If they only knew how difficult it is to get something to sound this good, even with Melodyne.
Hi Simon, so sorry I have missed you in Stockholm on Saturday. I went to the Zero8 concert and saw you leave (must have been after the early show) when I came in. Did not react quick enough... Nice work on this one! GREAT choice of music and perfect execution... Love the tune! Keep the excellent work up! And thank you.
@Sylvanas590 You can contact Marshall Webb on the email address thevocalcatATaolDOTcom, and if you'd mention that this video brought your attention, I'd be realy thankful!
Hey Simon! I'm looking into doing this song this coming winter, so I was wondering if you could send me a link to where I can buy/download the sheet music?
I'm not autotuning anything. I'm melodyning. And Melodyne is more like a color enhance filter, something that makes a picture look nicer, although such intense colors would never exist in reality.
I prefer it this way. Sorry if you don't. But it's not a crime...
@Blumenkatze Then listen to something else, I guess. I really love this because it's perfect. Well, not because it's perfect, but because of the perfection of harmonies, I can feel the vibrations as they're supposed to sound. It feels great, and activates something in me that makes me feel just pure happiness... something people without perfect pitch cannot activate truly.
Wow. You actually sang the different parts differently? No one does that on here. When the different parts have solos, they sound like different people LIKE THEY SHOULD!
Don't know if it's you or the mixer, but credit where where is due.
You have a beautiful voice! Excellent job! Also, this sounds almost exactly like Return2Zero's version of the song; either way, I still love both versions.
hey man I swear I walked past you at international last year at Anaheim. Man you are something else. I wish I could do my multitracks like yours. I don't have the equipment for it for one, and I need more vocal coaching. Congrats man, this one is very impressive. I was wondering if I could buy this as a track? or get it so I can put it on my ipod. I like it alot. :)
I think it may have been mentioned once before, but it bears repeating. The arranger is the incomparable MARSHALL WEBB. He's quite an amazing a cappella singer himself.
I want to hear you sing in dutch, or swedish, whatever you call that language. Swedutchish? I don't think I have heard anything like that. Maybe the Loituma people... don't know if they were swedish or not.
Ok Mr.FineyLeee ... This time you've excelled in posting a complete song with magical amosphere and awesome chords, emphatic acting and clever expressful volume and rythm control. This, compared to the other song you just posted about Xmas, strikes me more because of its originality; it simply reaches so
much character.
Well done boy and most of all, welcome back after a long time of "silence". 5 stars
I agree. Your pitch and technique are crisp and clean, no doubt. But I too sometimes feel like I'm listening to a human MIDI file. I don't feel warmth in your attitude or voice. As a listener, it bothers me a little bit, I feel like I'm watching gymnastics, when in fact I'd like to see someone dancing. Great job anyhow, hats off to your performance. I would have rather felt moved, but I am definitely impressed.
I apologize for any lack of emotion that you think this song might suffer from. But if you're referring to the pitch correction itself as a lack of warmth or attitude, then I think you're mistaken. I have learned that everyone has different preferences of "purity" in their Barbershop sound, and it's impossible to please everyone. I myself think that this sound is close to perfect, exactly what I prefer, so doing it differently wouldn't be "me".
Oi! I love you dude. This is my xmas tune of choice now... I'm a drummer but well into my harmonies. Thankyou for the music! Enjoy... (come to a Calvin Harris show and say Hi!)
It sounds very nice and it's indeed good to see you finally decided to post full songs. Your tags only strategy was making you fall back more and more: Danny and Vance already overtook you in terms of no. subscribers.
The "santa" shortly after 1:04 was suddenly less loud. Did you use too much dynamic compression here? Well, maybe it's just YouTube's compression's fault. BTW: When you mention YouTube compression, do you mean dynamic compression or the AAC compression to save file size?
Fault? It's artistry. I sang it like that. I wouldn't compress different parts differently much anyway...
YouTube rerenders the video when you upload a clip, and they process it through a number of audio and video filters. Somewhere, they've made something that distorts everything over 50% the maximum sound level, which is outrageous. Obviously, the guy in charge of that compression doesn't know what he's doing.
What did I do? I didn't want to be offensive in any way - just saying I like the video and the fact that Simon posted a full song. And I asked a technical question. How is that offensive or in any way a reason to yell at me?
the General Assembly should be the chorus you made the trax for huh? I sang with Larry in that chorus and had the pleasure of seeing my old chorus in the summer. Nice guy too. Great chart as well.
About YouTube: they don't really have sound engineers. They have an automated reprocessing system that re-compresses uploaded videos unless they're already exactly as YouTube wants them.
The problem is that any lossy codec will have to mangle the sound somewhat, which means that some samples will be made louder and some softer. If you normalize to 100% (0db) before compressing, some wave at the max amplitude may be pushed beyond it, causing clipping.
The solution is to normalize to somewhat less than 100%. I would go -1db or down 10% (depending on whether my software's normalize feature sets its parameter as dB or %) for each lossy audio codec pass that it will have to pass through.
So, since your final output counts as one codec pass, and YouTube counts as a second, you should normalize to no higher than about 80% or -2dB.
CJ, trust me on this, there IS no "solution" other than what I just did. My other recent tags have been pushed back to about -6 dB, and the distorted sound is still coming through. This one is a -8.8, and it turned out alright. But the sound level is so low, you really have to crank up the volume on the speakers.
Considering Facebook and other sites with video features have managed to get it right, you would think YouTube should be able to too, right? I mean, aren't they the biggest site?
I've been involved in YouTube forums about this, and everyone agrees with me. YouTube REALLY screwed up this one. And no one in the staff admits the problem, nor do they fix it. The society that uses YouTube for music is currently furious about. And for all I care, I could switch sites...
I wonder if YouTube wrote their own codec encoders? There's no need for them to have done that other than ownership and NIH Syndrome (and perhaps to avoid paying licensing fees to the MPEG Consortium), since high quality encoder code already exists for all platforms for the relevant codecs. For Flash Video, Adobe makes their own encoder that works reasonably well.
I'd love to see a YouTube-like site that uses Ogg and HTML5 tags. No Flash needed!
Nice! I want to see you stretch your bass voice a little more! How bout a C2 or even an arrangement with a Db?? Think of it as just an excuse to get drunk again. :-) Merry Christmas Simon!
Wow. Amazing job buddy! I thinking about putting together a mixed CD of the YouTube Multitrackers doing their Christmas songs. I'd need your MP3 file......
