  • Does anyone know when and where this concert was?

  • @AtCMusicRozz Apparently at Blue Note, Tokyo.

  • about the clapping: people smile and clap and make noise, it's the history of music. I think it's especially suited to this song. It doesn't really sound good, but it's nice to know that jazz hasn't got the life sucked out of it- the audience can still make some noise along with the musicians

  • Hahahaha he quotes Max Roach at 3:57. :DD

  • So why is the drummer bad? Time is everything and that drummer had it. Time is evidence in his solo, he was actually singing the tune in his head during his solo. That's why Hank comped a few hits. Any who Mr. Hank Jones is awesome!

  • Terrific

  • Definitely not the right drummer for this gig..!!

  • @granthunt yes u r so rite cos u r d master of jazz!!!!1!!1!11!

  • @granthunt

Why not? He fits in perfectly. Very in the pocket. And he has very obvious chemistry with Hank.

  • @granthunt I don't see your reasoning for that. The whole point was to have fun and mess with the changes/tune. That's exactly what he did! And all 3 of them had their own style, and his was just... Fun!!

  • Audience clapping is such a vibe-killer for any music

  • @Jyazz21 In this case, I disagree. I think it added to the atmosphere. Jazz audiences sit contemplatively as though they're listening to Mozart and yet the music is so much about rhythm and movement. Why shouldn't an audience clap along or dance?

  • @ImaniHekima I find it annoying

  • @Jyazz21 Fair enough. But I've read many of the musicians of previous eras speak fondly of the time when audiences also danced and responded vocally to what they played. That Tokyo audience even clapped on the offbeat - which makes a pleasant change. :-)

  • @ImaniHekima @Jyazz21

It depends on the style. IMO, the mood of this calls for dancing and clapping etc., but more exploratory/atmospheric stuff should be listened to "contemplative silence".

  • @colourfulwithaU Yes, I agree....some performances are best enjoyed without American Idol style whooping and cheering...

  • @Jyazz21

Oh, do you mean audience clapping after a solo, or audience clapping on 2 and 4? I can't stand it when the audience claps on 2 and 4.

  • @Jyazz21 I wouldn't say for ANY music, but fucking A-right it is for jazz. What were these people thinking?

  • I hope I still play like that when I'm that age....

  • Guys, the drummer was using the method of "broken time."

  • @israel142 how do you know when a drummer is at your door? his knock slows down.

  • @davidyee Ha ha :)

  • the drummer went off.lol

  • @CanvasLife

    When?

  • THE DRUMMER GOT RHYTHM WHOW.... =O...

  • That drummer.......wowwww

  • Bassist is David Wong, for those of you who are wondering. He is currently the bassist for the Heath Brothers and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

  • @rosskratter you forgot that he's amazing!

  • Can anyone tell me what kind of jazz this is please?

  • @JScarper bebop

  • What's the name of the drummer and the bassist? this trio is totally awesome!!!Hank Jones forever!!!!

  • MAN i loved the drum solo!!! HE was REALLY singing something with his drumzzz

  • stop clap your hands idiot !

  • whats the ending chord progression hank plays at 5.08??

  • @RevoIutionz he plays the biimaj. for ex in Bb he plays Cm7 Bmaj ( or B7 or B6 ) Bbmaj.

B it's the tritone instead of playing F7.

  • Am i the only one who thinks the toms are tuned too high?

  • what's d title of this whole show? would love to have d full DVD.

  • wow

  • At 1:24 what is he playing? I'm almost certain it's some song, but I can't remember the name. It's driving me nuts.

  • @TheKjtheDj It sounds a little like "Get Happy" Maybe?

  • Too bad the crowd is so happy-clappy. This performance is stellar.

Jones sounds simultaneously brilliantly inventive and deeply rooted. He makes bebop sound dangerous again.

  • I'm a bassist myself, and normally I'm not a fan of upright solos - But this is incredible! :)

  • excellent voicings... love this guy.

  • it is billy kilson

  • now i got it its billy kilson!!!!!
