@steveconn Then we can talk about how after the Axis powers had been defeated, the French reoccupied Indochina, and how the Viet Minh didn't like this, beign a revolutinary army they didn't want to be controled by anyone. And so, the Viet Minh launched a war against the French. This war was really just a bunh of low-level rural insurgencies, but after the Communist Chinese boreder reached the north Vietnamese regions in 1949 it became a full blown war. (continued)

@steveconn The French were backed by the US, who wanted to stop the spread of communism. This is rather funny, because as I have already stated, they funded the Viet Minh during WW2; of course they stopped funding them. But now the Viet Minh were being funded by the Soviet Union and the PROC.

The North was to be controled by Ho Chi Minh, and the south by Emperor Bảo Đại. But this new republic's leader, Diem, wasn't to keen on negotiations with the North to organise a nationwide election in 1956. The North saw this as a colonial war, they foguht against the French at first, and now they were fighting asgainst the South, which they considered to be an US puppet state. The US got involved in the war, but this time they didn't just fund one side, they actually sent troops there. And I think we all know how that war went, right? Fall of Saigon and all that jazz?

@steveconn Apart from when you said that the US didn't fight for the French; they actually did (in the first Indochina War).You also said that the US gave up after ten years, it was actually almost 20. Also, the fact that the viet minh were communists had nothing to do with their war with the French, their communistic ways were only a "reason to fight" for the US.

@steveconn How can you get the years wrong after we just talked about it? America was involved in the war since it started in 1955, and started sending troopr in 1965. They left in 1973. So it was '55-'73, or '65-'73 if you only count "invovlement" as sending in troops. Also, you are incorrect again. America was allied with the French to fight the Viet Minh, they created the State of Vietnam(South Vietnam) to end thw war and stop the communists from taking control of the whole of Vietnam.

The US actually started sending advisors in 1950, back when the area was called French Idnochina. And finally, I never said it laster for 20 years, it actually lasted for 19 years and 180 days.

That happened after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964, when the Vietnam war involving America and Vietnam started, until we left in '75. Over and out.

@steveconn Let's make one thing clear, the Vietnam War started in 1955, 10 years BEFORE america sent troops. The war was between North Vietnam and the Republic of Vietnam. The South had more troops fighting, and lost a hell of a lot more good people(not just soldiers). If you're going to insist that the war was actually "US vs Vietnam" (instead of "North Vietnam vs South Vietnam") then I can say the war was "Australia vs Vietnam", because they had troops in Vietnam too.

Then in the First Indochina War, they were fighting to protect France's colony, but only because they wanted to stop the Viet Minh. Still, I think France did occupy Germany in the 1800's and was responsible in keeping the Dunkirk evacuation safe. So I guess it is a bit unfair moniker. You guys did have Napoleon.

@shaider1982 Umm...the french didn't surrender until their entire nation was occupied. It took a few weeks for the Nazis to drive the British off of Europe and the French to almost oblivion. You didn't care about men, the Nazis drove over the french when they could, go around you when they didn't feel like it.
War requires sacrifice, something that the Americans, Russians, and the Brits did. France was just a battlefront for the real nations of the modern world.

The Soviets did all the hard work anyway. THe British were on tea break until after 1941 and started kicking ass. The US was busy bombing Japan and the French were busy slitting German throats and bombing railroads. Thus was WW2.

The USSR only waged war when it was convenient for them, attempted to conquer nations like Germany did, albeit not on such a large scale, and very well could have been enemies of the allies. (They also signed a non-aggression pact with Japan)
