I saw Sloanie at the North Sea Jazz Fest in 2000, and when she sang "Serenade in Blue," you could hear a pin drop. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. Amazing vocals and one of the best kept secrets in the jazz world.
Superb. I love her meditative expression. I had never heard of this singer before; thanks to Mark Myers from the lovely JazzWax site, I'm now familiar with her. Thanks very much, Mark, and another big thanks to the uploader of this gem.
Feel free to drop by my jazz & swing blog, if you like. Link is in my profile. See you there.
Bravo!! amazing what a beautiful moment a true artist can give us; she's great. I'm a classical artist but I fully appreciate and love what she does. Thanks!!!
Jimmy Rowles was Carol's husband. In fact he already worked with Keter Betts and Bobby Durham, as he was part of the trio that backed Ella after Tommy Flannigan left in the late 70s
Wonderful -- thank you for posting this video. I only saw Carol Sloane in performance once -- at the Top of the Senator in Toronto -- and it remains unforgettable. One of the most communicative singers I've heard in a lifetime of listening ...
Thank you; this was the first time I saw her "live" too. I absolutely love her Concord Jazz recordings and generally everything I heard of her until now -and here! Great performer; stunning, "instrumental" control over this beautiful voice. And she can swing...
Beatiful!!Love that pretty stuff Rowles is playing behind her,you just don´t hear piano players like that any longer. And that´s Ella´s rhythm section Keeter Bets and Bobby Dorham: no wonder they sound so great!MORE!
Tom - Jobim4me here -- I adore Sloane and what a thrill to see this video. Is it part of a PBS special she did with Rowles? Like to see more if there is. Brian
Brian, I believe it was part of a PBS show in New Orleans. I have a very busy & diverse music activity schedule; but hopefully to free up some time in the next few weeks to select, convert (VHS to DVD to AVI) and upload some more of the songs to YouTube. Glad you enjoyed it, Tom Pierce
Allen, You're welcome. I fully agree with you & am glad I've gotten to know her personally & see her quite a few times live the the past 7 years, through the Songbirds Internet group. Tom Pierce.
Piano comping is unbelievable.

she's marvelous.

How many singers would dare to sing a whole song a cappella? Just lovely!
