Andrew, I like your camera work a lot! I just started participating in SCA combat last week, and have been watching as many Pennsic 38 videos as possible. Your photography is some of the best, on account of a steady hand and good framing. Too many videographers try for wide shots that encompass more action but provide less detail. Your full-body frames give great detail and dynamic action. Keep it up!
Thank-you. The camera work for Pennsic 37 & 38 is done by my squire brother (I give him credit at the end) who is a Steadi-cam operator in the film business. He has been doing videos, TV and movies for over 20 years. Most likely you have seen his work, without of course knowing it, as he has done many Hollywood films and TV shows. The best thing is that he does the camera work at Pennsic for me as a favour.
The point is that it is fun and exciting, a blunt blow is a blunt blow. Rebated weapons are medieval and in using them we can thrust to kill to the vitals (open face, exposed arm pit and the back of legs. Wearing mail blocks those blows in our rules for this action.
whats the point???!! your using SCA gaff & r5attan crap when fully armoured.....I use the REAL weapons & when your wearing plate you dont need to pull blows so why bother with 'pretend' weapons?
You do need to pull - or to avoid certain areas - otherwise you die. :)
I have done a lot of steel and a lot of SCA. Steel is real weapons, looks and sounds better; SCA (especially in the expanded form of some SCA-like tourneys with grappling) feels like real fighting.
I have never seen steel fighting where you can do sudden, unexpected thrusts to the eyes; throw yourself physically into piles of people; or treat the head as the main target.
