  • this has nothing to do with good piloting. many people where lucky this day. of course it took skill of the pilots in charge to get out of the situation. but there were bad decisions made by several people in the plane and on the ground that brought the plane and passengers aboard into that. and the computer gizmos in the plane didn't help either. read the report.

I'm not sexist, and I personally know some very damn good female pilots.... but there was a study done by a college awhile back that proved men are better at operating equipment because they feel the equipment as an 'extension of their body' whereas females not so much.  Again, not sexist, just saying.

  • Male / female matters not. Co-pilot attempted to land but was unable, therefore the Pilot took the controls and made the landing. Gender, race, creed have no bearing on the matter. Most experienced senior crew took command... and in a few decades, she may find herself in the reverse situation.

  • he did save the lives but he found necessary to go up again ..... i only needed to put a bit more power and correct with rudder to hes course find centre of RWay again ... anyway good call on heading up again

  • at least at 100ft from the runway he should correct course with runway with rudder ...... he almost kill people by turning that way at first he was getting himself too high and trying to do a side slip or maybe a foward slip but he kept it for tooo long while he was on top of the runway ....

    Sounds if the reporters were hoping for a disaster. As a professional aviator, this airplane was never out of control. If it was out of control, then it would have crashed. Good airmanship and pilotage happens everyday. Every flight isn't a smooth takeoff and landing.

  • This incident was entirely the fault of the aircraft, not the pilot. Due to poor design by Airbus engineers, the airliner's computer switched from flight mode to ground mode as soon as the wheels hit the runway, partially locking out the flight control surfaces and making it impossible for the pilot to correct properly when the wind caught the plane.

  • @jeepnutnh Pilots in training can get experience in many ways without putting the lives of hundreds at risk. They could do smaller aircraft or freight in the same aircraft as the commercial airlines. There is no need to practice difficult situations with large numbers of passengers lives at risk.

  • First of all everything was pretty much fine until he/she went to kick out the crab and didn't add opposite aileron. But secondly, this landed and Hamburg-Harburg, which is not a commercial airport, and there's also no way a commercial flight would be allowed to land in those conditions. Every carrier has crosswind maximums, and this was surely over whatever they are. This was no LH flight.

  • I say that there was pilot error in trying to land in such strong crosswinds. I know there are you who will say, "it was completely safe and he did not crash"...

    Well, actually, he did crash. That was a wing strike, not a near miss and the whole god damn airplane was almost lost. Don't take chances with passengers, that is my bottom line. Sometimes, you have to. This was not one of those times..

The only thing that matters is what you feel in the wheel and what you do to get the plane on the ground with as much skill, & grace as possible. This report is exaggerated. This was in many ways similar to many crosswing approaches. If ATC's active runway is deemed not safe, then the pilot can choose another. The pilot is always final authority.
