To you all...thnx for stopping by with your coments on this great actress/singer.
She is up in years now- all we can do is imagine her health status. It surely would be good to know something about this one we love so dearly theses days wouldn't it?
I thought this particular movie was great- theme, plot and with conductor Leopold Stowkowski !! Don't you love her in her younger movies? What joy she projects!
@peachpecan - Yes this was the very best of Deanna's films and recognized as such by Hollywood, since Charles Previn, Universal's music director (and Andre Previn's uncle) won the Oscar for best musical direction for this film that year.
Deanna Durbin could have played the role of Violetta quite beautifully. Her voice mesmerizes the audience, who ought to appreciate her exceptional talent as a prima donna.
See RINA HUGO and lovely petite fille singing Doebidibu...we love er in SouthAfrica ah she sings in Afrikaans..DVDs of Deanna are available in S.A too
This aria is from Verdi's "La Traviata"and Deanna's character is Violetta, the lover of pleasure who is already dying and wants to pack as much partying into a life which she knows will be a short one. Trouble is, she falls in love with Alfredo, His dad . Germont, doesn't approve and a lot happens before she dies on stage at the end with both men present.Deanna would have made a great Violetta on the opera stage. A few years older than she is when she sings this aria. Bravura, diva Deanna!
I just looked at Amapola sung by Deanna Durbin. Its from a movie called First Love and was the movie where Deanna got Her first screen kiss from Robert Stack His first movie.
Like Alice Faye who quit the movies when She started getting bad parts, Deanna also quit and retired to France. Alice Faye remained popular on radio and then TV. Both were wonderful in their own way.
Like Shirley Temple saved 20th Century Fox, Fred and Ginger saved RKO during the depression, Deanna Durbin saved Universal Studios during he depression.
I'll go as far as saying she saved even more than a studio. To have missed Deanna Durbin's talent would have been like missing out on "Silent Night" or "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" The world is a better place having Deanna Durbin with us. Let's hope one day she will be placed at the top where she has always belonged; regardless of her deciding to get out of Hollywood and turning down offers; none of this has any bearing on what she did for us music and movie lovers of real talent.
Thanks for your reply to my post. We all like to have a witness once in a while. Denanna Durbin will never know the impact she has made on so many lives. As I have stated before; I think she made a very wise choice to let us remember her as she was. Old age and ill health can be so cruel. Look at recent Eddie Adams and her demise; I was shocked!
thank you for posting deanna was my late mothers favourite. but when i was a kid i never Appreciate fine music but now at 51 i do many many thanks for posting
Deanna's sitaution was a little different from Shirley's at 20th and Fred and Ginger's at RKO. While those studios had other popular stars under long-term contract to help bring in profits, throughout her adolescence, Deanna Durbin was Universal's only "A list" star under long-term contract. According to published reports, Deanna's films were responsible for more than 17 percent of Universal's profits during the late 1930s. She really deserves the accolade of saving her studio singlehandedly.
I agree with the comparison of Deanna, the Canadian Songbird, with Te Kanawa,New Zealand's gift to music, and Fleming. What about a young Dawn Upshaw, who was on the stage at the Met in 1984 (age 24) and whose voice on Goreki's "Sorrowful Symphony" in her early 30's took Europe by storm. We have Deanna's movies, but Oh! she could have done much more had she continued her career instead of walking away from it at age 26 or so. But she did it her way and that's fine.
I don't think Deanna was the inspiration for Disney's "Snow White." She auditioned to provide the voice for the character but, although reportedly much favored by Disney's production team, was rejected by Walt because he considered her voice "too mature" for the role. Disney reportedly had the auditions piped into his office via intercom so he wouldn't be influenced by the singer's appearance and, when he heard Deanna, thought she was 30 years old!
Oh well, I just meant they were probably inspired by her perky attitude and hairdo...although Snow White had more of a bird-like voice than Deanna...And yes I prefer Deanna voice over SW's
Watching Deanna Durbin was such a wonderful way to be introduced to classical music. Her cheery personality and glorious voice were always welcome. I found her via THREE SMART GIRLS on tv back in the early 60's and watched every film of hers that I could. She had real TALENT as compared to what passes for "talent" these days!! Thanks for posting.
Many thanks for that, it was beautiful. I have only heard her sing this on one of dad's LP's. This is one of her films I have not seen, but it is now on my list. Thank you.
I'm looking for Deanna singing 'My Own' & 'One fine day' from Madam Butterfly to make a play list for my 87yr old dad who has been in love with her for ever!! Can any one help?
I can't help with uploading a video clip of "My Own," but you may have noticed that the clip of Deanna singing "One Fine Day" is included on this forum under its' Italian title "Un bel di"
She was not only a star; she had the largest fan club in the world. Durbin retired in 1948 (some claim it was 1950), age 27 (29), at the height of her career.
God bless you Deanna. You were pure, innocent, and had such angelic virtue unlike the "women-girls" of our time. So gracious and good, and that voice totally beautiful like an angel singing in a valley of lilies. And, honestly I was born in the 70s, but I still admire you.
I totally respect her for being a young girl who is interested in singing great music. So many people will tell us it just isn't appropriate for a 16-year-old to come out and sing a Strauss or Mozart aria. It is what I enjoy singing, and I hope I can prove we deserve to sing the rep. as well at Deanna does here.
As a young girl and hopefully a singer (never happened) I used to adore Deanna and still do. Her films and her wonderful voice helped me through years of polio treatment, for that I thank her. She will never know.
Me too, as a teenage boy. She rang my bell; I love music, play piano; and she inspired me to learn a few of her songs. I will always remember Deanna Durbin; she will never know me but if we believe in the after-life which we do here as Christians, we believe we will get to see her and hear her sing some day. She will be the lead singer in the angelic choir-- don't you just know it? Thanks for your comment.
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my new clip of 1930's cigarette cards of Deanna Durbin, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, Errol Flyn, Vivien Leigh, George Formby and Gracie Fields.
I understand that Deanna lives in France and is very private. She was a beautiful singer, I have just been listening to her version of "Beneath the lights of Home" Very moving... thank you for the video.
You are quite welcome. I love Deanna; she was an inspiration to me and brought my attention to just what a great singer should sound like. Her personality was so above par and her acting was equal to her singing in my opinion - just like no other, in my opinion. Deanna.
This is from "100 Men and a Girl" one of Deanna's finest movies. My mother loved her, and she introduced me to Deanna's talent via this movie when I was 11 in 1963. Thanks for bringing back Deanna and memories of my late mom.
I say she's the best! have you listen to her version of LOCH LOMOND OR MIGHTY LAK'A ROSE or my personal favorite WHEN APRIL SINGS. She was so young and fresh like NO OTHER!!!
I'll agree w/you immediately! Check this out; after all these years of loving Deanna/Edna Mae, where do I wind up living but, on a street named Loch Lomond!
I'm terribly afraid Deanna would be as sad to see or hear after all these years as the Betty Hutton interview was. Deanna has the right idea; let us remember the way she was, in every way. I hope she is in good health and good sound mind.
I hope some day one of her children will come forth with some kind of word from her many years of silence. I'd love to know everything possible about her many years we've missed. We will love you always Deanna, with the same love you expressed in your songs.
LOL I truly love Deanna's voice but even I can't go that far :) But she is exceptionally good. We're not talking about an opera singer here this is just a VERY gifted natural voice with a couple of years of training and that makes it all the more remarkable.
