Dave here. First heard Vaughn Monroe sing this song on channel 10, then called, WCAU-TV in Phila., PA in the spring &summer of 1950 in the background of the Ghostrider Show, an afternoon kids' show featuring western movies and introduced by a "cowboy" in black, masked as Eastwood is shaded in this video.
At last! A decent melody, & clear words: and what makes it so, is someone who can at least sing it with expression and feeling & make it sound believeable!
Clint of course looks damn sexy, but even the red-eyed cows look good in this one. And Vaughn Monroe voice is perfect - he sounds like he really means it.
Thank you for posting this. I also think it is brilliant. The BEST version of this song and there are some other very good ones but this is the best of the lot.
the very best version, I have heard them all and I love Vaugh's the best.I am 62 years old and I have listen to most of Vaun's soungs and I love them all. He had the most viseral voice and enucation, May GOD bless him and love him as I do.
What a great job you've done with this fantastic song. One of the best I've seen. I'm sure my father is looking down from heaven smiling. It really brings back fond memories. Thanks
My dad and I, who always fought, could at least agree on Vaughn Monroe. Ghost Riders was always my favorite, while he, surprisingly, leaned toward Dance Ballerina Dance.
For myself this is the only version of Ghost Riders. It brings back my best memories of growing up in the forties and fifties and always a lump in my throat and fullness in my chest.
I listened to Johnny Cash, The Blues Brothers, Frankie Lane and Elvis today. The Blues Brothers were the only ones who came close. I wonder if Tex Ritter recorded it?
The first time I heard this I was a kid as I watched Vaughn Monroe sing it on the Kraft Music Hall. It was a simpler time but the quality of his voice and how it so matched the song made it memorable. Thanks for posting. Great song but more a great tribute.
The list of those who recorded this song is endless, including: Outlaws, Ramrods, Susan Christie, Frankie Laine, Kay Starr, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Duane Eddy, Shadows, etc. But, in my opinion this 1949 version is still the best. The flip side of the original RCA Victor recording was "Single Saddle."
This is the first time I hear this version and I like it very much. Previously I'd heard Johnny Cash's version which I also like a lot. Curious to hear your thoughts on the Cash-version.
This is Great! I adore the Blues Brothers, not just because they can pull anything off n do the music justice.. but because they are so about the music that I get to know music better through them.. Vaughn Monroe, Elmore James, etc... so many more
It was also the best-selling version. Recorded on March 14, 1949 and released by RCA Victor Records, first appeared on the Billboard charts April 15, 1949, stayed on the charts for 22 weeks and peaked at position Number 1. The song was written by Stan Jones :)
this beats the hell out of the johhny cash video version...johnny used the word cowboy instead of cowpoke...and...to show my age...this was the first 45rpm record i ever owned...lol
never met my grandpa (he died before I was born) but my dad thought he was great and said this was his favorite artist and favorite song! (along with dance ballerina dance!)
There is also a Spike Jones version. At the beginning, the guitars strum, and the guitars strum, and the guitars strum. Finally somebody says "When do we come in?" Another voice says "On this song, it doesn't make any difference." Can anybody find that one and post it?
I was around when this song came out on a 78 rpm record. No we didn't buy it. No money. Had a radio though. Vaughn Monroe made it popular & a big hit in 1949. He was not the first to record it though. Frankie Lane came out with a big western hit - Mule Train also in 1949 & was a huge hit for him. Frankie's rendition of "Riders In The Sky" was never in the same category as Vaughn Monroe's version. Vaughn - deep voice. Frankie - more tenor. Both were fantastic singers though in my opinion.
This is great!!! Thanks for the vid! Everybody talkin' 'bout Frankie Laine and Vaughn Monroe, but I'm telling you - my daddy sings it best. This takes me back to campfires and clouds rolling over the moonlight and my dad, belting out this song; and little kids burrowing their heads into their moms' stomachs...and the wind thrashing through the woods and rolling across the lake...YIPPEEEIIAYYEEE YIPPEEEYIIOOOOOOOO. Thanks again
I've always thought Vaughn Monroe was a better baritone than Nelson Eddy ever could be. Eddy was much too over-rated. Monroe was the profounder voice by far. He'd have been great in opera had he chosen to go that route.
Superb song - and Vaughn Monroe's is by far the best version. Superb singing, and the background choir and orchestral colour is wonderfully evocative. Also wonderful deep throbbing rhythm from the guitars, etc. As for the clip, excellent! Well done - great to see a clip which goes so well with the song.
So many memories of men in my life that looked like these cowboys. Tall, thin, lanky, hats. I mean uncles, friends, and they had deathly looks sometimes. They are mostly all gone now. Awsesome song and video.
Great effort on the graphics for a great song. But the best version I ever heard was done by Lorne Greene many hears ago. But this does not detract from Monroes's smooth voice but the song needed more guts as it is supposed to be a bit scary.
I am still in awe of this song and clint eastwood did good as well and the hair on the back of my neck is still standing this song is one of the best songs ever written
Despite not being a country fan, I love this song. It's a first rate example of americana mythos. In my book it rates along other american folklore like Moby Dick, Hiawatha, Ben Hur and Salomon Kane. Perhaps it's impact may be greater than I think, since this beautiful song is more accessible than the aforementioned literary works. (Being my humble opinion that Robert E Howard's Salomon Kane possesses literary quality)
Thks for the info! I loved it the first time I heard it (1949) - to this day, I don't know which I like more - The Third Man Theme (also heard it 1949) or Ghost Riders In The Sky! As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell a riding on our range
Then cowboy change your ways today, or with us you will ride
Tryin' to catch the devil's herd, across these endless skies"
Yipie i-oh, yipie i-ay! Ghost riders in the sky
Ghost riders in the sky
Ghost riders in the sky
wtftadinho 3 years ago 9
Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred their shirts all soaked with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd, but they ain't caught 'em yet'
'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky
On horses snorting fire, as they ride on, hear their cry
Yipie i-oh, yipie i-ay! Ghost riders in the sky
wtftadinho 3 years ago 5
An old cowboy went ridin' out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
Plowin' through the ragged skies, and up a cloudy draw
Their brands were still on fire, and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders comin' hard, and he heard their mournful cry
