when she said that man is trying to make things his way , instad of gods way, is people try to twist the bible to their liking rather than following the word. but i believe god wants us to love and help one another to live in unison, accept one another/or atleast be tollerate and respect along with help .
It is one of my very very favorite song and version by Mahalia, which I love so much! She is really in the spirit, and you cannnot stay on your seat when hearing this!
FACT: Actually this was when Mahalia, was on her final European Tour before she died. Its the last Tour she would ever do, she became very ill and had to be taken home to Chicago. This Concert was in 1971 and she died in 1972. It wasn't in the late 1960's.
@rn2332 No this is her concert tour of 1969. The one in October 1971 was when she collapsed backstage in Germany and had to flown home by military medical personnel.
Musicians of the world, come listen. A study of Mahalia's musicality should be a compulsory part of every music course. There could only be one elemental force like this, and her ability to excite is what every soul, r and b and blues performer today and into the future are unconsciously channeling. Judy Garland and Lena Horne were fans. Jeff Buckley's crescendos were learned in part by listening to Mahalia.

Mahalia Jackson touched the hearts, souls, and minds of millions of people, and even on today, her marvelous voice echos the joyful praises of godliness. She was truly an example of what a Gospel Singer is, and is not. She "was not" a show, as is seem today.
she moves me, from when I was a young child, like she moved my mother, my sisters.. she still moves me 50 years later, every time I listen to one of her great performances
So far my Middle School chorus has sang 3 songs by Mahalia Jackson. But only me and the teacher know because they don't like listening to the good stuff.
P.S. for all those whom were in the building that day, you are truly blessed to have witness her majesty queen Mahalia Jackson live. I envy every last one of you lucky MF's
dang Mahalia, I was born to late (10/72) i missed one the GREAT 1's... her, and Jimmy Hendrix stand out as my favorites of all times even to this very day. Please come visit me, pretty please, with sugar on top
No fancy equipment, gadgets, glittering gowns, colored lights, nothing but pure soul-stirring ministry...!!! Pure, God-sent Talent!!! My Lord! I miss this...!!!
Mahalia Jackson was not a singer or performer. She was and is an Artist. An Artist that perfected her craft. She has cemented her place as the greatest gospel artist of all time. She is a treasure and we are fortunate that her spirit and legend lives on. Listening to her always lifts my spirits. It never fails. She never fails.
I'm Brazilian..I dnt undertand what the americam people seys about MAHALIA. But for me MAHALIA is the best siger that the american gospel music could give for the wolrd. and the bigining of all that Whitney and Mariah ad Mary Jay, and other could do in this time. The americam people must do reverence to this gospel quim...
@piratica999 that's blasphemy Mahalia Jackson would not herself on that level and neither should you. No one is god. Yes she marvelous and i love her but that is wrong.
@liljostens91 Most definitely! I'm a little more aggressive about it but yeah I feel you. Wish she'd come back and lay waste to some of these some of these people making records today. That voice of hers was dangerous. There's a couple of slower versions of this song that I love even more than this one.
Wow and to think she was worried she would never get her "original" voice back after her health problems in the mid-sixties! I mean did you hear that "hallelujah" at 2:57?!?
to me this is a real treat because i have never seen her dance before! she might not be doing those fancy footsteps but she praising him the best she can.
It's amazing how much the culture of the African-American church has changed in just the last 60-70 years. Today, you cannot have enough dancing and music, whereas before you were sinning for waving your hand!
True, but its intensity has a lot to do with what denomination and what era you are referring to. Compare for example the video of Mahalia in 1963 singing "How I Got Over" at the Black Baptist Church in New York (the black and white film) to the footage of Joshua Nelson singing "Elijah Rock" from just a few years back.
Not necessarily so..... Remember in the 1920's/1930's some Blacks in the Baptist Church who were economically okay looked upon demonstrative display as undignified b/c they were convinced that if they could mimic whites (the majority community, they would be looked upon as equal). This is further from the truth. Mahalia was a rebel like Kirk Franklin in that she was comfortable with herself in celebrating God.
Truly an anointed singer. She sings with the empowerment of God Himself in the person of the Holy Spirit.! How great it is to see God moving and living in a person that has dedicated their life to Him. He did it for her He can do it for us, Let's Sing and glorify Him like she did!!!!
GOD PUT THIS VOICE IN HER!!!! a devout old testament christian woman...notice she never wore pants, earrings, jewelry etc...never exposed herself like the women nowadays...very rarely if ever wore make-up...IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL VOICE BAY BAY
Mahalia sang for the Lord.... That will never be disputed.... She came up under a different time but her style was very much controversial because she incorporated Rhythm and "spirit" which in the 1930's was a strict no/no. SHE CONSIDERED HERSELF AS A MINISTER!!!!! That's probably why she did not wear much accessories!!!!
AND...I love how she never changed her personality to be a cross-over artist, or changed for the venue. Truly a lover of Jesus. I love it when the Holy Ghost would come on her. Bless her heart.
I LOVE me some Mahalia Jackson. I love to watch her sing her hair into a mess! Just sing those wigs all down! A true Gospel Evangelist. I was raised on her records and she's just the greatest. I can't wait to meet her in person!
A true pioneer in the Gospel. Even though then she was struggling w/heart problems she still gave God her all w/o complaining & here sit some of us w/no ailments & we can't do anything for God. Praise Him Mother Mahalia. U shall receive ur reward.
Mahalia is one of the greatest singers that has ever lived but the comment about her voice never being duplicated is kind of untrue just cause that Joshua Nelson guy has it down to a tee!!
I hadn't seen much of her material, but she was off the hook!! I had no idea she was so sick and still blowing the doors off the songs like that. Man, she was amazing!
So true!!! She didn't seem like she was ill, more like tired because she was touring so much, but I am just in awe of how she did it and made it look so effortless.
You have understand that this is a European audience and the setting is the sixty's. They were not accustomed to clapping to the beat of soul or gospel music. They look awkward because of this. - Mahalia is not "trying to keep up". She purposely holds out the lyric off beat to put emphasis on the heart and spirit of the message. In her autobiography, she talks about holding onto a song off beat because she is being personally moved by the song.
OK, I am not a performer, but I have to say that this woman is. Stars today would be worried about thier hair and fans blowing wind in thier hair the right way, getting thier dance moves right and all that.
This performance is purely her voice and her soul. No frills and special effects. Now this is a fantastic performance given by a true artist throwing her all in for the Lord and her audience.
Dr. Clency was my voice instructor. During this time he was a very humble man. He rarely mentioned that he played for Ms. Jackson. I hope he is doing well. Dr. J. Wilcox
Are you sure? I just left a message on his answering machine. He is the Director of Choral Music at the College of Lake County? This must be another Clency. It has to be.
I know this was back in the 60's during the time of segregation and mistreatment of blacks. I don't understand how white folk could sit and enjoy this woman's beautiful singing at the same time won't allow her to drink from the same water fountain as them. When I see old clips like this it just make me wonder. This is long before my time but I just wonder how some white folks can live with themselves considering the dirt they've done. They should feel mighty stupid today. I know I would.
I wasn't suggesting you or anyone else should be held accountable. The point I was trying make is a lot of the people who enjoyed this woman's singing would be livid if she drank from their water fountain. There was a lot of dirt done in the 60's regarding blacks. And believe or not there are still people today who harbor that same hatred. And it's stupid really. You may not be one of them but they do exist. The fact that some people feel God made them superior to others is dumb. I would be ashamed.
Exxodus: I really understand what you're saying. Mahalia said the same thing in her autobiography. It made her feel dismayed at the hypocrisy of society. She taught those people you're referring to to think beyond themselves. It just takes time, patience and a lot of guts to endure prejudice. Things are changing however glacially slowly. Rome wasn't built in a day.
exxodus: something else occurred to me regarding her acceptance here. This was filmed in Europe (Sweden). Europe has always been light years ahead of America regarding the acceptance of black artists.
Because of Mahalia's introduction of Gospel Music to Sweden, Stockholm is the biggest place for Gospel Music in the world outside of America. Mahalia is a legend there. In a time of covers, for music, NO white person ever covered Mahalia's music in the 50's and 60's. She was the Oprah of her time and broke the color issue in music selling MILLIONS OF ALBUMS. In the 60's more of the SHOUTING Mahalia came out in her art. This was more accepted in the 60's.
Gwen Lightner Cooper On piano, Charles Clency on organ. This is in Orebro, Northern Sweden. SHe is absolutely stunning!!!!! Captivating, without drums, bass and all those things that bog down modern gospel. This was a working woman. YU SING HALIE
This concert was towards the end of segregation and took place in Europe not the US. Race was not an issue, thus Mahalia was able to draw large crowds of all types of people from all walks of life.
I just loved this woman...she just fills you with pure joy, when you hear her sing. She was BIG...BLACK...BOLD...LOUD, with these awful wigs on her head but they were almost symbolic of crowns instead because Mahalia really was a queen. I dont believe in the God that she sings about but I do believe that there is a power that rules nature. How else can you explain a voice as supernatural as hers was. There wont be another one like her, EVER.
I agree with you that Mahalia did justice to religious music. She is incomparable. I'm not sure what you mean about her God that she believes in (and you don't), but you have the essence of her God.
not sure what I meant?....she sings about a "biblical GOD". I dont believe in a "biblical" GOD. Simple. I dont think having "the essence" of he GOD is relevant, here.
I don't mean to offend anyone. I know that Mahalia travelled to the Far East and believed that many prophets came to other cultures. In Japan she stated that "they had their own interpretation." She was grounded in the Baptist faith, but she expanded her views as she travelled and matured. Ultimately, she believed that all people of the earth were coalesced into a unique bond of brotherhood.
im complaining about NOT having drums to play with and this lady rocks a large auditorium, singin whateve she wants with organ & piano...an don't miss a beat!! WOW!! God Bless!!
I wonder if it freaked her out to have everyone stay in their seats while she sang... I don't think I could have! I feel like jumping up right now! =)
still now you go to live cocert where you have only seats and nowhere to dance!i went to a rockish-punkish-french concert in a theatre.hard to express yourself in that case.a concert is a recreation, there is nothing like a bastille day ball in the country anyhow: music, friends, fireworks, warmth...
I love it that Mahalia didn't look like a movie star. She was all gold - in her incomparable talent and in her amazing anointing - and needed no glitter at all. :-)
I discovered her long after she died, and I miss her (but I'm happy she's no doubt in Heaven - which she helps us to feel closer to)! Thanks for posting this video. :-)
"My Lord "My Lord! What such a Beautiful Voice! Mahalia is one of My Favorite Singers She have such a Anointed Voice. I'm so bless by her Songs" Thank you Jesus!!!
I love how dr. charles clency looks like he's had the air knocked oot of him before the second run through! you can tell how they were all putting their all into this performance!
Praise the Lord that these clips still survive today! Mahalia Jackson will always inspire with her God given voice stright from heaven. Rest in Peace, dear Mahalia.
I agree, I'm generally turned off music with too many fancy effects, disco beats and what have you. All respect to them, but would one put people like Albertina Walker and Shirley Caesar in that category?
I personally prefer the honest, simple sound, and honest simple presentation of Mahalia. She's singing to us from the heart, and there isn't anything to get in the way. No pretentions, no ostentation.
Hmmmm, I don't know the pianist as Louise Lightner Cooper, but I do know her as Gwendolyn Cooper Lightner (her married name is Lighter). However, there's a lady who used to play for Mahalia in her earlier years named Louise Overall Weaver.
This is the most animated and full of the Holy Ghost I can ever recall seeing Mahalia Jackson. She was usually more reserved. She was a true evangelist this performance. A contemporary gospel artist by the name of Liz Mc Comb reminds my of Mahalia. She is from the states but has migrated to Paris. She is a very special Gospel artist.
In Mahalia Jackson's later years, she really "didn't care" anymore. She just let it all out. It's almost as if she was saying, "If they don't know me by now, then they just won't." LOL!
All of her songs are special, but I like to see videos of Mahalia in a live setting and hearing recordings of her concerts from the late 60's and early 70's. She doesn't hold back at all. I have a concert of hers that was recorded in France in 1968, and I think it's the best!!!
ah yes..... live at antibes on the french riviera i have the recording as well....pianist eddie robinson and charles clency whom eddie got Mahalia to hire feeling the need for a musician who could read music
my favorite performance by her !

I LOVE me some Mahalia Jackson. I love to watch her sing her hair into a mess! Just sing those wigs all down! A true Gospel Evangelist. I was raised on her records and she's just the greatest. I can't wait to meet her in person!

Mahalia is one of the greatest singers that has ever lived but the comment about her voice never being duplicated is kind of untrue just cause that Joshua Nelson guy has it down to a tee!!
Congaman07 2 years ago 3
No Nelson dosen't. Nelson sounds similar, but he cannot duplicate hallie's voice, no one has as of yet. God has not sent her replacement yet.

I hadn't seen much of her material, but she was off the hook!! I had no idea she was so sick and still blowing the doors off the songs like that. Man, she was amazing!
lepoetress 3 years ago
Isn't that amazing. No one would of thought she had heart trouble even then. That was the anointing of God
schs19947 3 years ago
So true!!! She didn't seem like she was ill, more like tired because she was touring so much, but I am just in awe of how she did it and made it look so effortless.

The audience is clapping OFF BEAT!, & she's trying to keep up.
Kingmovieman 3 years ago
You have understand that this is a European audience and the setting is the sixty's. They were not accustomed to clapping to the beat of soul or gospel music. They look awkward because of this. - Mahalia is not "trying to keep up". She purposely holds out the lyric off beat to put emphasis on the heart and spirit of the message. In her autobiography, she talks about holding onto a song off beat because she is being personally moved by the song.
Sarjer1 2 years ago

I am in the CLC gospel choir this semester and I can report that Dr. Clency is alive and doing very well as our choral director.

I know I would.
exxodus29 3 years ago 3
Amen to that.

I am wht, I wasn't blessed to see this woman in person, and we can't be held accoutable for what others did.
stevene1965 3 years ago
I wasn't suggesting you or anyone else should be held accountable. The point I was trying make is a lot of the people who enjoyed this woman's singing would be livid if she drank from their water fountain. There was a lot of dirt done in the 60's regarding blacks. And believe or not there are still people today who harbor that same hatred. And it's stupid really. You may not be one of them but they do exist. The fact that some people feel God made them superior to others is dumb. I would be ashamed.
exxodus29 3 years ago
Exxodus: I really understand what you're saying. Mahalia said the same thing in her autobiography. It made her feel dismayed at the hypocrisy of society. She taught those people you're referring to to think beyond themselves. It just takes time, patience and a lot of guts to endure prejudice. Things are changing however glacially slowly. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Billinindiana 3 years ago
exxodus: something else occurred to me regarding her acceptance here. This was filmed in Europe (Sweden). Europe has always been light years ahead of America regarding the acceptance of black artists.
Billinindiana 3 years ago

I'm sorry. I hear drums in there somewhere.

This concert was towards the end of segregation and took place in Europe not the US. Race was not an issue, thus Mahalia was able to draw large crowds of all types of people from all walks of life.
davy75az 3 years ago
She is in Europe, what color audience would you expect? You're referring to the south.

There wont be another one like her, EVER.
pronkking 3 years ago
I agree with you that Mahalia did justice to religious music. She is incomparable. I'm not sure what you mean about her God that she believes in (and you don't), but you have the essence of her God.
Billinindiana 3 years ago
not sure what I meant?....she sings about a "biblical GOD". I dont believe in a "biblical" GOD. Simple. I dont think having "the essence" of he GOD is relevant, here.
pronkking 3 years ago
I don't mean to offend anyone. I know that Mahalia travelled to the Far East and believed that many prophets came to other cultures. In Japan she stated that "they had their own interpretation." She was grounded in the Baptist faith, but she expanded her views as she travelled and matured. Ultimately, she believed that all people of the earth were coalesced into a unique bond of brotherhood.

You can say that Patti LaBelle rules the stage but when it comes to Mahalia Jackson she is the empress ruler of the stage

still now you go to live cocert where you have only seats and nowhere to dance!i went to a rockish-punkish-french concert in a theatre.hard to express yourself in that case.a concert is a recreation, there is nothing like a bastille day ball in the country anyhow: music, friends, fireworks, warmth...

Yes...sing Halie, Louise Lightner Cooper, on piano and Charles Clency on organ....play Charles. in the Northern Part of Sweden.
tikkunsoulam 4 years ago

She is a very special Gospel artist.

mahalia was like this in live performances espeically with black audiences
loaactnow 4 years ago
Yeah, that's true. But then in the late 60's and early 70's, she "cut up" even more...and I love it!!!
Rowoches 4 years ago
In Mahalia Jackson's later years, she really "didn't care" anymore. She just let it all out. It's almost as if she was saying, "If they don't know me by now, then they just won't." LOL!
All of her songs are special, but I like to see videos of Mahalia in a live setting and hearing recordings of her concerts from the late 60's and early 70's. She doesn't hold back at all. I have a concert of hers that was recorded in France in 1968, and I think it's the best!!!
Rowoches 4 years ago
ah yes..... live at antibes on the french riviera i have the recording as well....pianist eddie robinson and charles clency whom eddie got Mahalia to hire feeling the need for a musician who could read music
