Travis may not be a really "good" singer, however he can show and pour his emotion in the singing.

This song isn't only about drugs (and to be honest just because a person isn't a junkie doesn't mean they haven't been adversely affected by drugs) it introduces themes of alienation, hopelessness, and despair. Which are pretty universal themes in this world of ours.

Plus as a musician myself, I would be flattered to have my songs covered. Music to me is a very social art, if people didn't want to play and sing
