Of course you can play. The game works on HL2 Source engine. Doing proper animated movies with GMod is rather difficult though, so many prefer to make slideshows.

well of course you gotta have the time to make animated movies. Just making 30 seconds of Leon Kennedy doing a Liu Kang rocket kick took me like an hour or so. Just making everything work fine and bearing bloopers and technical difficulties added an hour. You can still just record few seconds, get bored, save and quit, return and hope nothing got corrupted on the way.
