They're not really an important part of the original ff7 story, just thier purpose was explained in the later games

And two the Weapons really never made an attempt on attacking Jenova or Sephiroth when the barrier is taken down. But it dont matter. I respect your viewpoint :3

You know, when I first saw Weapon charging at Junon, I thought it would be like Godzilla vs Tokyo, where the poor army has no chance in hell. I actually like the fact that they were able to kill the beast..made Shinra look like they were actually capable of saving the world..

..also liked the touch that when you return to Junon, there are still signs of damage, and people are lamenting the losses the attack caused.

This is by far one of the coolest CG cutscene s of FF7. The music is condensed "OMG WER'E DOOMED!" and the battle is just plain cool. I love how junon turns from a military town into a mega destroying kick butt stronghold!

If you think about it the 2 cannos really arent that great cause they only fire in one direction if the weapons where stupid instead of heading straight at the cannon if they went to the side the cannon would miss since it only fires in one direction :)

Actually if you look closely, the cannon is mounted on a turret. While not capable of free movement, it is capable of swinging and adjusting height and angle.

Anything more than that and you have to assume it wouldn't be bolted down enough to withstand that kind of firepower.

The other weapon that died from a canon was from the Mako cannon built in Midgar. The mako cannon was shot at the northern barrier to destroy it and the other weapon happened to be in it's path.

@HateFatSlobs First off, Emerald Weapon (the one swimming around underwater) looks nothing like the one in this movie - not to mention it still has a head when you face it. :)

Secondly, it's mentioned later in the game that the canon from Junon harbor was moved to Midgar in order to take out the barrier around the Northern Crater.

Therefore, even though it was only luck that allowed the canon to hit Diamond Weapon north of Midgar, it did, in fact, take out two Weapons.

Come to think of it, a giant corpse would have been a nice touch, though it would have been prett hard to impose in there among all the lifeless underwater scenery. They should have put the corpse in there and stored like, maybe some form of materia where its heart should be (summoning: Emerald/Ruby WEAPON = awesome.) Maybe the theory that that thing was Emerald Weapon was right - which would explain why Emerald doesn't seem to have a head, though not the colour difference.

I don't understand why you criticize the game. If you follow the storyline beforehand: Rufus had the cannon built long ago for reasons not entirely clear. However, once Rufus, Heidgger, Scarlet, Tifa, Hojo, Cloud and Sephiroth awoke the Weapons, Rufus accelerated the construction in order to be able to fight the weapons on their own terms of power.

As for the missiles and gunfire, if only eight warriors can fell one of the world's most dangerous creatures, why can't shrapnel?
