  • those are some pants, Mr Morrison!

  • holyshit!

  • I was there! What a surprise to see this.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. What joy!! And with Etta James scat singing, too. Incredible!

  • I have always thought that some of Mr Morrisons best performances are when he is pushed a little. What a list of pushers here and I think they should all be listed, for the younger crowd. Thanks

What a wonderful performance and I thank you very much for being able to watch this!!!!!!

  • Unreal.....many thanks for posting this great performance....love it...

  • * * * * *

  • ODG! Oh dear GOD! THAT'S how it's done!

  • what kind of guitar is carlos playing?

  • @roaringwaterbay iirc, that's a guitar custom made for Carlos by Yamaha and played by him throughout the 70s. the bridge and tailpiece are set in a solid block of brass for extra sustain.

  • @wilecuyote good info. thanks.

  • Yeaaaaaaaaah baby !!!

  • Holy. . .wow.

  • would love to hear Prince (piano, vox,) Santana (guitar), Grady Tate (drums), Michael Franks, Cyrille Aimanee (vox) Gretchen Parlato (vox), Stanley Clarke (bass) with anyone else who fits the groove..................on this cut......wouldn't u??

  • @TheKelly50 Thank you for helping put the musical experience into perspective for the quantifiers amongst us. An analogy might help those who listen to compare rather than to embrace. Think of musicians as culinary chefs and their instrument like a spoon stirring a pot. The pot contains all their life experience and creative juices. Now think GUMBO. That's what musicians give us - their own personal musical GUMBO. Take a taste - or don't. This isn't an economy lesson - it's ecology.

  • Carlos is a Superstar---if u listen close, Scott,Etta,Dr.John get their due......

  • @RootsinBrooklyn cause santana's a BAWSE. also he has a reputation in music more recently so people are more likely to watch the video. also he's playing the fucking gee-tar, not some unaccessible weird crap like the jazz clarinet. etta probs shoulda been mentioned though you're right on that one. but no one gives a flying damn about tom godforsaken scott.

  • @zacharywebber89 ............spoken like a true 'listener' ,not a player...

  • @arniemax1 ...and looks like doin' back up t 'dis etta....she son't do that fake warble crap the chix hang out on the end of each line...she was scattin'. she paid her dues...and left her mark...

  • @arniemax1 speaking for the people my friend. but then again i am a violinist ;)

  • I remember first hearing Van Morrison late at night on the Kid Jensen Show on radio Luxemburg...and then it carries on in the next posting...below.

Has anybody got a copy of the IT yearbook from 1971 or 72?

    "taetter@web.de" will get me

  • Luxemburg,,,whilst I was "slaving away" printing the monthly programmes for the Speakeasy in Margaret Street (in the Savannah printing works on the Old Kent Road)......and then I'd deliver them to Laurie and have a nice night at the Speak. I remember I almost had a fight with Ginger Baker...the loudmouth.... in the restaurant...

  • Very good point, Roostin.

  • Maddest Mix!!!!!!!

  • do not see how this song could ever be played too much

  • There's more to this vid. I can't remember what the other artists sing/play but I do know that van (I think it was on this one) sings Cold Wind in August, Misty, and finishes it off with Bring it On Home To me ...Wish someone would post that

  • WTF - unbelievable - 2 of my greatest musical idols doing one of my favourite songs with G.Benson egging 'em on ... I must have died and now I'm in heaven - surrounded by stars!

  • SWEET FIND!!! THANK YOU!

  • hhi

  • George Benson Rocked! If you named him in the title u d have a ton of hits

  • I remember seeing this when it was first on. Amazing.

  • 1:01 - "Carlos Santana"... Was that Apollo Creed sayin that?!?!

  • I think Santana played a good solo once upon a time.

  • Etta needs to shut up and let Benson take another solo...

  • his solo really doenst match the song

  • HOLY SHIT

  • The real!!!

  • If I knew it once, I've known it a million times, but I know it now more than ever

    Van!

    is!

    THE MAN!

  • 1 person hates life along with this song. screw you. dont listen to perfect jams if you dislike!!!!

  • I think this was recorded in Burbank, California during the Midnight Special at some point in the mid 1970s.

  • +1 for Etta fucking James and BeBop!!!

  • @nastyNate694 Dig that crazy hair on Etta.

Does she sing lyrics or just that stupid scatting?

  • Best version I have ever experienced!!!

  • Their all GREAT performers and musicians. Van is the man when it comes to singing! Excellent show!!!!

  • is this before santana started usin prs guitars? i dont believe prs makes an sg model like that or at least not that i kno of

  • @Teslaindustries.......yamaha...they make exceptional guitars...or some i9banez in his time...now carlos is the only cat that can afford a prs !!

  • @arniemax1 IT IS AN IBANEZ....ABALONE TRIM ALL AROUND THE EDGE OF BODY...AND DESIGN NEAR BOTTOM OF GUITAR (BENEATH THE BRIDGE)...BOB WEIR LIKED THESE TOO. SLIGHT DIFFERENT MODEL..CARLOS HAS A GORGEOUS PIECE OF WOOD IN HIS HANDS...

  • @arniemax1 he isnt the only one who can afford prs. plenty big names play prs guitars.

  • I'm a Santana fan, but he looks like he's having an orgasm during his solo. So gross.

  • Hey Bud listen to the whole song this is serious histoey

  • I like the way Van makes fun of his own strange vocal techniques - "My Face is All Wet Now!" he says at the end !

  • @bipolarbert i think he is saying "my face is wet" because he just preformed romance on his date, if you know what i mean.

  • Why do Black people always BLAME race???? We live and breathe a different world than Our Grandparents....there are no excuses when it comes to race anymore!!! This video is 40 years old!

  • No slackers on here

  • I cannot remember enjoying a version of Moondance more than this! Thank you for posting.

  • So many great artists, totally awesome.

  • beautiful .wow. That Etta is something else too.

  • George Benson's forgotten more about guitar playing than Santana will ever know

  • george benson is the shnizzzz !!!!! saw him and minnie ripperton live in 77 !

  • @buhbuhray13 that was harsh....

  • fkibg good

  • Unreal talent in one place at one time. I wish I had been there that night!

  • When it got to the end I realised I had an involuntary, stupid big grin on my face. 'nuff said

  • Hard to say anything here ;-)

  • Man am I excited right now!

  • one person's volume didn't work

  • wow, there's one wanker who didnt like this....? off with their head....

  • Wow!!!! Now that is artistry!

  • I liked this a lot. Quite an interesting array of folks. I think Etta James fell a bit short, I don't really think she understands scat singing (I think that's what was attempting to do?) She also wasn't familiar with the form of the song as she finished her solo 8 bars early.

  • Now this was a show.

  • Definitely see where Santana and Benson got their ideas for their licks; Etta James.

  • 3 of the greatest musicians the world has ever heard...

  • @xeridian I spoke too soon, make that 4 for the Doc'

  • @xeridian Then Etta came out of the wood works... I'll stop counting now, to much power on one stage! Paramedics were called after this performance for all the heart attacks of people that couldn't take all that greatness at once!

  • yeow.............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW!!!!

  • spec fkn tacular

  • i love how you can hear george scatting! fuck hes too good

  • Love love love this..... Van, Carlos George Benson etc... great jam for tonight's Super Moon!

  • ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!

  • Great stuff! Thanks for posting!

  • To RootsinBrooklyn...I believe it must have been George's gig as he was the one introdcing everyone.( at first I thought the same thing ) =]

  • It's really too bad that Benson and Dr. John were so quiet for their solos. Sound guy needs a lesson or two.

  • Van didn't need the other acts, just killed it on his own...

  • @pippo02 :):)

  • There's George Friggin Benson standing right between Van & Carlos. George's solo is such a nice understated contrast to Carlos'. So, how come Carlos gets 'billing' on the clip, and Tom Scott, Dr. John, Etta, and George get none?

Sometimes these all-star jams don't work. But here everyone is into the Moondance groove, and playing (singing) at the top of their games.. Nice. They breath renewed life into this overplayed classic!

  • @RootsinBrooklyn

Well said. Grew up listening to GB because he was my old man's favorite. A giant talent of voice and guitar.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Unfortunately George Benson seems to be overlooked as a guitar player, which is sad because he really is one of the best.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Because somebody don't want to give Benson his props, could it be because he's BLACK?,and the SUPERIOR guitarist on stage?

  • @gittahfiend

"Superior"? Odd choice of words. Apples & oranges. George Benson is no doubt one of the greatest jazz guitarists that has ever played. Carlos Santana is brilliant, distinctive, lyrical, and soulful in his own right - qualities that used to be valued in the jazz community. I suspect the two are fans of each other's playing. I agree that Benson deserves billing, but not with the conclusion that race is the factor. Did you think Carlos' name was included BECAUSE he is Chicano?

  • @RootsinBrooklyn at that time, carlos was at best probably as good as one of Bensons top students.furthurmore, carlos could not even PLAY jazz at the time, and dosen't play it all that well now. he is a ROCK and at best,BLUES guitarist. so yes, I stand by my statement of benson being the superior guitarist. This should have been titled Van Morrison,George benson and friends.and what other reason besides being a santana fan who's NOT a musician would benson not be acknowledged in the title?

  • @gittahfiend Sure, Benson deserves mention. Maybe the person just forgot, and then died or something. But I'll stand by my "apples and oranges" statement. Many of Carlos Santana's recorded improvized solos give me goose bumps every time I hear them, which is more than I can say for a number of competent jazz guitarists. Who cares if he doesn't play All the Things You Are or Giant Steps? It's clear to me why Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, and George Benson dug his playing.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn You think it might be because it is 40 years later and YouTube? Who cares...listen and shut up....who frigging cares...this is not kindergarten!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @TheKelly50

What is not kindergarten? I'm not really sure what you're even talking about. What is clear is that you must have a nasty streak - perhaps a personality disorder. Are you suggesting that the omission of a great artist's name shouldn't matter because time has passed? If "listen and shut up" is your only advice, why don't you take it.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Funny how you take down all your asinine comments and then respond to mine...I have a mean streak for idiots who treat me and others like you do!!!

  • @TheKelly50

That "listen and shut up' stuff just doesn't come easily to you, does it?

FYI, I just caught some misspellings in my last post, and chose to edit. Don't take that personally.

  • I suggest we all know who it is and that you are bitching only if to hear yourself!

  • @TheKelly50

Last I looked, Carlos, George, and Van were not only all very much alive, but still performing. Was it so terrible that I commented on Benson's name not being mentioned? Still not sure why this should send you off ranting nasty, adhominem attack comments at me.

By the way,I actually still have several comments still here, which I may remove soon as well. Removing them is not a way of treating you or anyone else badly. There's just no need for them to be up here forever.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Give it a rest would ya? You need to check your definitions boy...you are the nasty one :)

  • @TheKelly50

    How do you figure?

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Carlos Santana is Better!

  • @TheKelly50

Why must one be better? I say both Benson and Santana are great, inspiring musicians that offer unique qualities for listeners.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Because that is MY opinion - you are very tiring, not only do you like stirring up discord...you never gave Carlos props...you bitched they left Benson out of the credits...I said...It is YOUTUBE not Set in Stone!!! You need to listen and shut up...I on the other hand ...would like to! Quit buggin me Roots!

  • Respond to this video...So now you like Carlos? It is okay to give him props?

  • @TheKelly50 I never said it wasn't OK. I love Santana's playing. But I also love Benson's. (Check out some of the recordings he made with Freddie Hubbard or Stanley Turrentine.) It seemed a glaring omission not to include this giant of jazz guitar's name here, so I commented. I believe that you are much more adept at "stirring up discord" than I. If "listen and shut up" is so important to you, why is it you don't do it? You've added nothing here BUT discord.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn what kind of guitar is benson playing? thanks.

  • @RootsinBrooklyn Yeah - pointless to compare one against the other - though I would say that this is probably more in Benson's realm.

  • Great!! I love Etta james!!!

  • GREAT!!!

  • WOW!!!! WOW!!!! WOW!!!!!! Thanks for posting this amazing clip! WOW!!!

  • Carlos, George Benson, Dr. John, Tom Scott, Etta and Van

  • the clip is great thanks for sharing! One thing though why does anyone think Santana is anything special. I respect his playing but he is not that great but always seems to be a big thing?

  • OMG Van with HAIR!!!! His voice has only improved with age...

  • Wow! Unbelievablestuff. Thanks man! Great too to see van's Last Waltz jacket got more than 1 outing!

  • And George Benson, too!

  • I've heard about this session, but to see it . . . brilliant. Thank you for posting.

  • Holy Guacomole!! Is that Doctor John on piano??!!!

  • This is fantastic - never knew that van ever played with Santana - brilliant, thanks!

  • @vossmeister Guess the question is, who didn't he play with?

  • I saw this when it first aired and have been looking for it ever since. I know it's tough to post VM, so a special thinks for sharing. As an aside, they did several other songs that night including Cold Wind and Joyous Sound. So,the search goes on ..

  • Absolutely amazing. Van's voice was so strong and 'sharp' then. What a way to finish the song. Great scatting by Etta James too. Thanks so much for uploading this:-)

  • This is what heaven must feel like
