Loved this performance as a kid. Love it even more now that I'm a mother. I got the DVD for my kids. I love that they love the entire DVD. Young Marlo, what a striking lady. Young Mike looks a bit like Sanjaya from American Idol.
I remember this too....still think about the tune every now and then. I wonder if Roberta Flack thought about this the first time she heard he died...
@landk4boys Michael had vitiligo, ok. and also he wasn't 60 years old, he was just 50 and also he was male. Three big mistakes in one sentence, wow respect!!!
I get so sad watching this. So ironic how Michael sang about not having to change. Maybe if he wasn't so unhappy about himself, he wouldn't have died so young. R.I.P. Michael.... :(
The irony of Michael Jackson singing this song would only be apparent several decades later. He could afford never to "grow up" and indulge his "Peter Pan" tendencies.
It would've been really great if Michael's sister, Janet, was in that skit with him. Because Michael and Janet's relatioship was really strong, for brother and sister that is.
@loMJveable No I dont even some dude who knew him who was black in a VH1 special about michael said only in america could a poor black boy grow up to be a rich white man
@loMJveable Yes it was an old black guy. Because if you listen to the words they are pretty much asking what will they be when they grow up. At this point Michael was still black and his dad had control of his money. When he was finished growing up he was white and rich.
i just think its rude...Michael is still a black man whether its obvious or not...i dont think people should classify him as something other than what he is
I heard that Michael Jackson was 16 years old when he starred in this special. Come to think of it, my mom once said that his sister, Janet Jackson, was probably about 10 years old at that time. So I kind of figured that Janet was six years younger than Michael.

Michael Jackson didn't sing in the original though did he? Did you know that Alan Alda did a skit in this series as well. Classic. I am so happy that I can show my own kids this stuff. They love it.
I have the CD in which was done by Diana Ross. In that the lyrics were "When we grow up, Hey, When we grow up, Will I be a lady, will you be an engineer. If I have to wear things like perfume & gloves, I can still pull the whistle while you steer"

I'm surprised they had teenagers sing this. I'd think they'd have little kids sing it.
