dude the USSR was so fucked up that it was impossible for the beuracracy not to gain too much power from their administration privelages. Stalin represented this new caste of beuracracy and killed all the actual communists in the purges, and ordered that communists be purged by their moscow allied comintern lackeys, like P.S.U.C. and in Germany, the KPD had most of their leaders killed by the goddamn freikorps and the nazis WHICH were authorised by the weimar government.
Cool to see this. I had only seen Power And The Glory footage which is mainly distinguished by the intro by Curtis Mayfield in my opinion ( even if he does so a tad jivey ~ not disrespecting to Phil though)
This is a much better clip as Phil seems to be so much more himself ~ it's almost like there's nothing wrong with his voice or spirit. I notice now, the melodic similarity to Pleasure Of The Harbor.
Looking forward to seeing the new movie ~ Thank you for posting this!
This has got to be my favorite version of this song on youtube. With all the imperfections that being recorded on live television bring, it has this great energy between Phil and Jim, who really shines on this piece. Phi has all the elements of the quintessential 60s poet, singer-songwriter.
Is the time over when a concert was about the music and the words and not about the performer's costume. These guys showed up in whatever fit and was clean and just sang. Wonderful.
@meaford12 I like gordon lightfoots version too he started as a jazz pianist and a jingle writter he has some jazzy inflections in the melodys of his own songs
@brightphoebus Jim Glover was a buddy of Phil's at Ohio State and an important influence on Phil both musically and politically. It was Jim who introduced Phil to the music of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, taught him how to play the guitar, and, after losing a bet about the results of the 1960 Presidential election, gave Phil the first guitar he ever owned. Jim married singer Jean Ray, and the duo "Jim and Jean" released an album "Changes" that included this song & others by Phil.
One of the great pieces of music/poetry that ever came out of the sixties. This song, which i still play, always astounds me. Phil Ochs is about as underrated as any songwriter from those halcyon days. RIP Phils. I Ain't Marchin' Any More, either.
This is sort of hybrid between the Jim and Jean version and Phil's original take. Very interesting. Phil must have found it ironic to finally see his name in big, bright lights on American TV.
Wow...I can't believe how amazing this is! I think is voice still sounded really good, even if his upper register isn't like it used to be. I love this arrangement of the song. Phil and Jim really sound nice together. =) Thank you so, so much for uploading this! I always love seeing new footage when it gets uploaded.
Very poignant to hear Ochs using what sounds like the Jim and Jean arrangement of his song. By this point he had lost his upper register and needed the help to reach those high notes. Glover is great here; a shame they didn't record more together.
I have Love Me I'm a Liberal and The Marines Have Landed on the Shores of Santo Domingo but can't figure out how to change their format to upload them to youtube. Hopefully someone else will upload them.
@Gadfly25 I have the same problem you need somebody with a digital camera to video the record playing
jim taught phil how to play the guitar phil mentions esquire magazine they have an article on youtube now stateing that youtube stopped police brutality thats not true it just illustrated it to stop it they have to arrest the cops that are the perpetrators
Great song, loved it in the 60s, love it today, find myself singing it when the weather and/or culture is changing. I sing it quite alot!!

Jim Glover's harmony and descants (not to mention his lead guitar playing) make this performance really first-rate.
