Both, however the shortest day in Midwinter was the most pertinent one, just as Newgrange. You can see the sun set was important as it's where the so-called altar stone faces!
The Stag Horns represent the first tangible spirituality in Northern Europe. There is an 18,000 year old cave painting in lescaux, France, which depicts a 'stag shamen'.
He reappears throughout our history .... if you are of a mind to look.

I wouldnt mind getting a look at that .. Herne the Hunter can still be seen in Richmond Park I think it is, at times of national emergency.
