Played this CD over and over and over and over in the early 90's. The absolute simplicity and dreamlike feeling it puts out is hard to explain. Will always be in my top 15 albums of all time. Friends of mine who don't quite get it, can't understand it.
They flew over to Europe too for their "41" tour... great gig... Were there more alternative bands in the early 90's than nowadays ? Probably not, but their music got broadcasted a lot more... thanks in no small part to MTV's "120 minutes" w/ Paul King... that was back in the days, when MTV wasn't the music industry puppet it is now... Can't say I hear a lot of BJ Massacre for instance on any major radio or TV station today... WHEN ARE WE GONNA MAKE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY EAT UP ITS OWN SHIT ?
I am now lamenting my misspent goth youth in the Bay Area and my subsequent residence in SF in the early 90s...I have never hear of these guys before TODAY and lemme tell you this song and the others I've YouTubed in the past hour have withstood the test of time and my having been immersed in several different musical genres (Seattle circa late grunge, Austin singer-songwriter stuff, New Orleans now) over the past two decades...guys of Swell, I apologize for being such a jackass...
Saw them at "the Rivoli" in Toronto when they toured "41". THE best live show I have ever seen. The audience would not let them leave the stage. Mind blowing.
le petit film tres "lynchéen" colle tres bien à la musique du groupe ! avec son ton desabusé et ce son fantomatique, leur premier lp m'avait beaucoup impressionné.
I bought this Wish cd used for 4 bucks back in the Mid Nineties and this became one of the best albums from beginning to end! It just has this soothing sound to it. The only bands I can say have a similar sound are Deus from Belgium, Death Cab For Cutie and Built To Spill. I totally forgot Swells name and it just came to me at 1:30 am! I had to google it and thank God for You Tube because this song just made my night. I need to go dig for that Swell cd tomorrow!Swell is still awesome rare talent
@djpdoubles Thank you for three new band names (new to me). I will look for them on youtube. And if I like their music, I will probably get their albums in the shop this week. ;-) The Swell are more than lovely & great! I'm listening to their music for 12 years now. :o)
@djpdoubles ... yes, thank you! I just got two CDs, one from hayden and one from cold war kids. listened to them in the car today. my first thought is, that Hayden is really quite similar to Swell. :) But not that melancholic and intelligent... ;) But let's see... I will have to listen to them more often.
i'm 40 years old and have a huge record collection going back to before i was born .. and i can honestly say this up there with the BEST... what a song... this pisses on 90% of everything..dark , mysterious , and fucking brilliantly mixed
.. i think the same ..mate ! its not my favorit stuff ..but i think its just perfect ! and i realy love it ! i saw this video back in ninties ..and i remember that i have tried to record it ...and i almost succseded ..lul .
i'm 40 too, but feel like 28 because of music like this... i've absolutely devoured music for a long time and, exactly as phunkaizer says, this music sounds fresh every time..... Swell's music really is something else... i bought Well back in '92 or '93 when I was in MPLS and it's been playing in the rotation ever since
Excellent excellent band. Man, these guys never received the attention they deserved. But, it's kinda cool to be one of the few in the know. I only have their early work, and I need to get off my butt and pick up some of their newer stuff.
it would be amazing to get some good vids of them live. or even if someone could just gather a picture and put some of the songs on their (get high, price, turtle song, tired, wooden hippie nice)
i have seen this video couple times some about 10 years ago !!! i have just remind myself today that there is something i want to see which i saw long time ago and i want to get back to it again !!! and that was it ...swell
