I call belly dancing the Middle Eastern Hula. And do you know why? Because the movements are similar to those of the Hawaiian hula and the Tahitian tamure: you know, the swaying of the hips, the butt, the hand movements, and the type of costume the dancer wears.

It's interesting how the ruffled and seemingly scruffy extra bits of skirt(?) work with her motions to give the illusion almost that perhaps her hips are completely separate from her body, which puts enthasis on them. Interesting indeed...
