  • i never knew birds were so smart

  • Wow! How did you teach your bird to do that? I have a male bird, his name is Poco and he's the first bird I've ever owned. He can say quite a few things and he even sings songs, but I have no clue how to teach him tricks.

  • @Rhyme27 HI! This trick I taught him by just putting him on his back in my hand and praised him if he held it longer. I have also taught him with a clicker. You can google clicker training for birds and there is a yahoo group to support people trying to train. It takes some consistency though.

  • I had a parrotlet that I named Verdie Birdie. I had her for five years, she was a gift from my daughter. She was the most lovable little soul! She had beak problems from the beginning and I would have to have her beak trimmed every month. Then all of sudden she became ill and died in my hands one day. The local lady who had been bred her I found out later, was interbreeding her birds. Was very heartbreaking. Be careful where you purchase your pet.

  • @Rustydymon That is heartbreaking. I too purchased from a breeder with questionable stock. My first two parrotlets died before their first year. They were the sweetest birds and bonded with me immediately but I never went back to that breeder for fear of similar outcomes. All the best to you.

  • @boombella Thank you for your kind comment. You know, I still miss that dear little thing so much, and it's been a number of years now. I have shied away from getting another bird for fear of the same heart break. I've just checked the prices of Parrotlets too, recently and I can't believe how much they are now! It is a good thing, that way people will not take the responsibility of a pet lightly. My little Verdie Birdie was a green rump and she cost $50. at the time. Worth every penny and more!

  • @Rustydymon Oh, I know. I still miss my others. I've been extremely lucky. Bean is 10 years old. He cost me $100 back then. I love him to pieces and he is such a great companion. Perhaps some day you'll get another. It is a 100% emotional commitment though.

  • @Rustydymon

Awwww that's so sad. I got mine from a really good friend, he's 5 now but I don't know where he got him.

  • Adorable!

  • Ha ha ha that is so funny. How do you even teach them to do that?

  • my bird has been doing this trick for 3 weeks now, he's really good!!

  • I showed my parrotlet some of beans videos, and he always chirps and squeaks when he sees him!

  • hi can you tell me how old bean is ,i just recently got finn ,well now namedbarnie, he was born early october ,but is quite shy ,when i put my hand over his head he sometimes opens his mouth as if to accept the seed but doesn't i keep him on my shoulder as much as poss ,but i would like him to get comfortable i've only had him a week this saturday ,so trying to get him on his back is a feat as he goes to bite and it's HARD !! ..i'd like to know how long till he got used to you ?

  • hi can you tell me how old bean is ,i just recently got finn ,well now namedbarnie, he was born early october ,but is quite shy ,when i put my hand over his head he sometimes opens his mouth as if to accept the seed but doesn't i keep him on my shoulder as much as poss ,but i would like him to get comfortable i've only had him

  • What, kind of bird is this? Thanks :)

  • i just got a parrotlet, 2 days now ,is he unsure or is there more i should do to convinvce him he's safe ? any tips ?

    mary

  • @polks6 Hi Mary, You could try offering him millet. Open the cage door and hold it in the opening for him to come to you. If he is still shy, try offering it through the cage bars. Try the web forum talkparrotlets for a great resource on parrotlets and any other questions you might have. good luck with the little guy!

  • @polks6 it took my plet a month to completely warm up with me. just be patient and talk to him a lot. I started trying to teach him step up immediately. However, at first I had to use a stick because he would try to bite me. millet is your best friend when trying to train. try having him eat it out of your hand and with the step up trick :)

  • awwwwh bean is sooo cute! :3 can i eat him?! lol awwwwh and the name is sooooo cute! x3 BEAN!

  • So cute - My little one used to do that. Not as STILL as Bean though.

I lost him 4 months ago and i still cant get over it. :( We are moving house and I don't know if it'll be suitable for a another Parrotlet. I miss my Sprite so much :(

  • @MrsJvK

did you teach him or is this natural my caique naturally rolled on his back i just recently got fin aka barnie ,but he so shy he was born early oct he's young any tips

  • thats what my parottlet was doing a month ago! but he wasn't playing :(

  • Ah hah hah I think he's awesome, as awesome as when I made my two baby bunnies go to sleep :D. What you do is put your hand on their back and then do what you did in the video then they go to sleep, because of a special nerve in their backs.

    Great vid

  • awwwwww!!!!

  • how awesome is that little bird LOL <3

  • its apparently a natural response most chickens will also do that

  • sweet!

  • Adorable...one of my lovebirds will do that (with less grace than Bean though) but the other feels it is beneath his dignity!

  • Wow, very impressive! What a smart little guy! Made me laugh so hard... :)

  • How did you teach him to do that! :D I want to teach mine that.

  • @blasteryui well... I did not really teach him. He sort of did it and then we practiced longer and longer holds. I would not do it if your bird does not like to be on its back. Some parrots hate that and others don' t mind. If your bird struggles with it, that means he probably does not like it. You should not push it because it might break his trust of you. Trust is hard to get back once broken. good luck! remember to praise him well if he does the trick.

  • aw so cute :]

  • That's incredibly cute ^_^. he does it so well ^_^.

  • that's real good. he doesn't even blink.

  • i cant get mine to do that >:O!!!!! lmao

  • Your parrotlet is so cute. They are wonderful little birds.

  • why do you say 'stupid trick' ? :(

  • Hi, There's a feature on the David Letterman show called "stupid pet tricks" where people come on stage with their pet and they usually do a cool trick. There's a great video in the related videos column that has a guy and his dog who plays dead. very cute! Perhaps not so stupid but I was just modeling the title after the show.

  • parotlets seem like great pets, have yours ever bit?

  • @3sugarbeans Yes. In fact, Bean just bit me. He is going through a hormonal stage and I wasn't paying attention to his body language. He doesn't usually bite though.

  • @boombella thanks, yeah i have a lovebird and she has temper-mental issues. =| One day she is a sweetie, the next she is an extreme biter. Haha, i never know wht to expect! Thanks

  • I should have known with Bean today. He bites around dinner time when we have napkins out and food. He thinks all napkins are his and should be protected. :)

  • I'd say,VERY cute and obedient,not like my rainbow lorikeet....and i love your vids

  • Thank you! Oh, and Bean is not that obedient. In fact he is going through a hormonal phase right now and is a little bit nutty.

  • nutty?like...he's a little mad??

  • He goes crazy when you have paper napkins. I also think the shorter days are causing him to need to go to bed earlier. He sure gets cranky. He also loves the trash can and goes wild when you put stuff in it. Silly Bean.

  • what a beautiful bird

  • What a nice thing to say! Thank you.

  • Hi boombella! Let me say I love you parrotlets! I have one of my own named Harley. Check him out!

  • my kids want that kind of parrotlets i order them 2 by the pet shop they are babys they were handfeed so i have like 2 week with them they bite alot and i dont know why ? what can i do to stop the bite plz help me someone ??? what can i do

  • try looking up biting on talkparrotlets forum. Do a google search for talkparrotlets and you will find the forum.

  • birds take a while to get used to you. my conure stopped biting me a month after i got him

  • uau congrats

  • How cute! What a cute lil beaner! How did you teach him to do that? very clever.

  • i have a african grey named beans trippy

  • heheheheh XD

  • How great that u will have a permanent record of his trick...he's a lovely, lovely bird indeed. I often think of some of my sweet animals' gestures now that some of them are no longer here and have only my memories..although they are pretty wonderful!

  • cute!! what sort of a bird is this? =)

  • Bean is a parrotlet.

  • 7 years old is still young considering Parrotlets can live up to 25 years old. Amazing that their so small but their personalities are that of a Amazon Parrot. Check out our videos too :)

  • how old is bean now?

  • He's 7 years old.

  • wow he's very old!

nu must be an EXCELLENT pet carer/owner!

  • what a sweet bird :)

  • i use to have a pastel blue one, i bought it at the bird shop for $400 it was very young still, under a year old. fell in love with it right away! she learned tricks quickly she even did this one. she got re-adopted. i miss her

  • doesnt that hurt the bird..

  • No. If it hurt him he would make a lot of noise and struggle hard. He is very relaxed here.

  • That's a cool little trick you've taught him! He's such a cute bird. Be sure to check out our Parrotlet videos! :)

  • Aw, that is so cute! I love how he tilts his head back.... You have a very smart little birdie!

I'm trying to teach my green cheek the same trick... But she's too stubborn to listen to me.

I love how birds have so much personalities in little bodies, you know?

  • How is Bean doing?

  • bean is doing great! Thanks!

  • do you think the bird likes that? he probably does. if i get a parrotlet, im gonna teach it that, too!!! i just have to figure out how much they cost...do you know?

  • HI, I'm not sure how much they cost now. You can find a good breeder or search for birds that need rescue. My friend just adopted a 2 year old that is sweet and well adjusted (see my visit with Skeeter) To answer your question. Bean is out of practice and when we try this trick, he does not really want to do it any more. I never make him do it if he would rather not.

  • I got mine for $50 at 8 weeks old. That is the minimum age they are allowed for sale.

  • sooooooooooooo cuuteee i love itt

  • cool

  • this is an ex parrot

  • HA I don't think Mickey would ever let me do that .he isn't one to let me hold him he would rather sit on my finger or shoulder

  • oh that cute. ^-^

  • silly bird. lol

  • adorable! what a sweet little guy!

  • how many times did u have to flip the bird over till it learned to stay that way until u helped it up?

  • Not sure. I would count in my head at least until 5 and if he got up before that, we did it again until he held it longer.

  • Bean is so cute :D

  • that is soooo cute.. his little legs and feets scrambling lol

  • What a smart birdie! My lovebird, PJ, does the same thing but not so perfectly. Thanks for posting your little superstar's trick. Nice job!

  • HAHAHAH

  • think my baby budgie can do that? he is a few months old and likes playing with my finger or hand insted of standing still.i dont have its parents and its a lone bird with no friends.i may get him one when i feel he will be nice with it and have a bigger cage

  • haha how cute!its a very inteligent bird :D

how long does it take to learn that trick ???

  • Not very long but he needs to practice because he doesn't do the trick as well. However, if strangers are in the house and we are showing of, he performs better. It might have something to do with instinctual fear of being prey.

  • what kind of bird is bean

  • Bean is a Parrotlet.

sorry to take so long answering.

  • you are just wonderful with your birds ! they trust you completely. just love your videos..am sharing them with my bird friends.i had a little p'let that would walk up to my computer mouse, lay his head on it and go to sleep. that ended my computer time, it was too sweet to disturb. his name was Hoochie and he had my whole heart.

  • OMG!!!!! that is so cute.

  • adorable cutie bird!

  • that was cool. i wonder what the longest time for the bird to play dead is??

  • Not very long. I think his longest was 10 seconds. There are some vids posted by other bird owners now that can do it better than Bean.(we don't practice enough) Thanks for commenting!

  • I rescued a blue paralette and i wanna get her to sit on m finger she was badly neglected and got screemed at alot she picked all her feathers. her feathers are all back and she will softly chirp with me whens a good time if ever to work with her i think she should enjoy touch and kisses but afraid ill scare her to death!!! any sugestoins

  • stupid trick?! thats an awesome trick! its so cute!

  • Thanks!

  • What a fabulous trick!

  • Thank you.

  • He's so tiny and cute. They have parrotlets at a pet store close to me, and they are so cute. The friendliest one is the one that belongs to the owner and lives at the store. She sat on my finger once, and she was even littler than my budgie, Rudy.

  • Yes they are small. Female parrotlets can be more curious and outgoing than males.

  • And more aggressive of their mates; my Piri latched onto me until I brought in Piers, as she was codependent and would never play with toys. They bonded to each other in 2 minutes and that was when she became hostile to me. (Later, I found out Piers was indeed a male).

  • aww very cute..i wish i could teach my tiels somethin cute like that. the only thing they do is talk..lol.

i ve been wanting a parrotlet for the longest. but can t seem to find any in decent prices. i was told they dotn talk. lol

  • I've seen some parrotlets on Youtube that do talk. Check out my new vid where Bean's friend calls him on the phone. Anyway, a male budgie is a great affordable pet and they usually talk if you spend time talking to them. I think Bean might have become a talker but he had Sprout, his brother when they were young and didn't listen to me even though I tried to teach them.

  • lol aww.. i have had male keets in the past..and never talked. i have 2 tiel males and a female budgie..and the tiels talk sometimes..n the budgie picked up a few words lol.

  • We have a female tiel named Rooster. We thought she was a male until she started laying us eggs. She does not talk but will interrupt my husband when he is talking with her trademark shree. That is something the parrotlets both learned. They speak cockatiel. Lol!

  • wow! bean is really talented! we have tried this trick on bubbles( my sort of new parrotlet,) but he doesnt like it very much. :P

  • Bean doesn't really like it any more either. He was going through a very trusting faze and we practiced every day. We don't practice and he doesn't perform as well. Except when there are lots of people in the room. He likes a crowd. :)

  • boombella did you ever try to contact the producer of the David letterman show?

  • Naw, but I did use the name of that segment 'stupid pet tricks' for the title of this video.

It would be fun to go on the show, but not so fun if Bean did not do the trick on TV. Ya can't make him do it if he isn't up to it.

    :)

  • This is insane! My parrotlet Cloud would bite off my fingers if i ever tried to do that! He like me to scratch his head though. Maybe he will grow to trust me like that some day. Great video!

  • hi boombella, i really want one of these birds. questions, do they scream? are they hard to care for? do they make good pets? how did u teach her that?

  • I think they are great pets! There are some webgroups that might answer more of your questions. google parrotletexpress yahoo group to find info. also there is another web group called talkparrotlets dot com.

  • For noise, check out my vid called attack parrotlet. Both my birds are shouting and that is about as loud as they get. It's no fun though if they are shouting on your shoulder.

  • I want your trick

  • I think Arthur can do it.

    (:>

  • Oh, he's so cute. My first parrotlet took that trick to the next level. When he was on his back I would push his body up, and he would do a neckstand. I miss him, he passed away last year from MWD. :(

But good news! Just bought a brand new little girl last night. Sweetheart!

  • Hi naturegirl, so sorry about the passing of your first parrotlet. That must have been so sad. Good to hear about the new bird though and hope she settles in nicely with her new home.

  • cute

  • too Cute, I had no idea birds like to please so much!! Love it, Goodluck on Deb's contest!

    Lori

  • He is sooo sweet:)My birdie was doing the same....i miss him so much:(

  • plz everyone watch and rate my video of my kitty satchel! she is sooo cute and friendly! More videos to come!! The name of the video is Satchel the cat comes when called. Please visit my channel. THX! :) I've got a video of a little baby bunny too.

  • Awesome Bird. Mine is still being weaned but should be ready in 2 weeks. I also got a pacific green, but female.

  • congrats on your new birdie! I hope she bonds well with you.

  • I hope so too. I am getting very impatient. I have the cage set up with 3 toys, 1 swing, cuttle bone, a cozzy and 2 perches. Not sure if I need other things. She is still in a fish bowl and being fed formula. Hopefully in 2 weeks she will come home.

  • How sweet. My birdies love toys they can shred. There are these things called shredders and also toys made from bamboo pieces and strung up like kabobs. Plain kleenex stuffed through the bars also works for shredding. Sounds like your birdie will have everything she needs for a good start. (:>

  • Bean is the best!

  • thank you. I love him to pieces!

  • That is so cute! I'd love to try it with our Linnie.

  • it's hard to teach them to be on their backs

  • True, Bean has learned to flip over really fast now and doesn't do the trick as well. I don't practice with him as much as I used to though. The best time to try the trick is when the bird is tired. If you have a quiet moment with it before putting it to bed, see if it will lay back with your hand closed for support, then gradually increase to opening the fingers.

    (:>

  • haha oh my god that's wicked ^^

  • YAWN...

  • what? what does ur bird do?

  • Great video! I can't say that I have ever seen a parrotlet on it's back.

  • It's not a trick, the bird is being tranced.

  • aawww so cute

  • I love how you talk so sweetly to Bean. I always check for new Bean footage. We LOVE bean. Can we see more? Please.

  • ha thats so cute..

  • A Normal Pacific Parrotlet (green) runs about $100 and they are easy to get. Yellows, blues, and whites can run anywhere from $250-$1,000. Go to a bird show in your area, or do a search on line. They are awesome pets!

  • That's great! My p'let Lexi HATES being on her back; but I'd love to teach her this trick. Go Bean!

  • How much $, and how easy, is it to get a parrotlet? How are they different from cockatieals and big parrots?

  • Happy 1000 views Bean!!

  • that's right. Due to the fact that I was a pet trainer for doves I know about this stuff ;)

  • Hey that's cool. I think if I had a second career it would have something to do with training/caretaking of birds. So much to do in this life, so little time...

  • errr... that's nothing special... it is a kind of natural rigid, to fake death if they're attacked by enemies who only eat living birds.

  • You are right, it's not something special. A lot of pet tricks tap into an animal,s instinctual behavior. The key is in timing to make it look like he knows what it's all about.

  • That is so, so cute! Bean is awesome. I can't even get my parrotlet to perch on my finger!

  • Aww, perhaps with time he/she will. Have you seen the vid of coco getting scritches? Bean won't let me do that. Makes me so jealous, LOL. Go see, it's precious! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2YMc4KLrzk

  • Bean's the man!

  • lol, my quaker does that too, she doesn't pop up by command, but she'll lay like that in my hand for a while

  • It's all in the timing. I don't think he pops up on command, he's just learning that he has to lay still for at least 5 seconds. Perhaps he is learning the verbal command as well but I am not sure. He doesn't do his chicken impersination when I ask him to, only when it suits him. Some day I'd like to catch him doing that. Only, he won't do it when I am looking!

  • lol thats awesome!
