what hazel had in common with the pixies are the same things that the pixies had in common with many bands of the 80s, 90s, and earlier. dynamics, tempo changes, volume changes, harmony, unusual time signatures, etc. nowadays those are becoming a rare thing with bands that manage to get any mainstream airplay. if you open a hit song by the latest flavor of the month rock band in a WAV editor nowadays, chances are that it's just a wall of strict 4/4 tempo hot-mastered noise with no dynamics.
@gangpill Erm...Tasteless,uniform,bland,oppressive,unattractive,conformed,unwitty,depressing,mind numbing,saturating and generally awfull with a vocoder...
The nineties where a golden age we seem to have neglected...^^
There is some of that, but neither Frank Black nor Kim Deal had the natural instinct for harmony that Jody Bleyle had (has?)-- she is the Emmylou Harris of indie rock
I actually agree with this dude. Of course I don't think either of us are trying to overgeneralize the band. They just sound like they were influenced by the Pixies. But really, who wasn't.
@Krueger22 Yes, there's a bit more in common than male/female vocal pairing. I see more influence in the bass and guitar than anything else. There's a bit of loud-quiet-loud going on too.

THANK YOU! Half of my band's set list was Hazel covers back in the mid 90s, including this one. Their stuff is pretty hard to find, so grab it when you see it. Pete Krebs (singer) is still pretty busy these days.
Thanks for posting this...PDX rocked in the 90's!!! Hazel, Heatmiser, jr. high, Crackerbash, Thirty-Ought Six, the drakes, Sunset Valley, Braille Stars, etc... So many memories of La Luna and the Satyricon.
i remember this video played on beavis and butthead once...but yeah, hazel are a genre to themselves: like grunge, pop-punk and indie blended..i wish more bands sounded like them.
I have these dudes' album. rare as fuck these days no doubt. singer always looks so geeky, the album art cover you dont really take seriously! still, fucking great band & shit!!
Somebody give me tabs please!

not really......have you actually heard hazel or the pixies? Besides whats on youtube?
Somehow i dont think you have a very informed opinion........
looshkin66 2 years ago
i have 4 of the pixies albums actually.
soo FUCK off
kurt5000yh 2 years ago
seriously........hazel sound nothing like the pixies.
The only thing they have in common is a female in the band who sings occasionally.
and i was correct......you may have pixies but have you heard anything else by hazel?
