I have no idea where some of these people say that DW is slow. I met DW many years ago when I had the honor to appear as Danny of the Avengers Gang in Ring of Fire 2. In a conversation that I had with him during filming, I asked him his fighting philosophy, and he stated emphatically that victory went to the fighter that could, "not only dish it, but take it just the same". Rob Kaman I assure you during that time was a formidable opponent, but he would never have beaten DW.
They never fought. But I think the fight should have happened since Kaman had been the No.1 contender for Wilson's WKA lightheavy crown. So, the rules would've been the international rule (leg kick rule). While it's true Kaman was more specialized in the Thai rules or something similar, Wilson had several fights against the Thais both in the Thai rule, and the similar.
@legkicker01 thais at don and robs weight are few and far between, the standard wouldnt be good, kiatsongrit would be the closest around their time,he fought in early K1 matches and was nearly 80 kg.
With the exception of Samart Prasanmit, Wilson's Thai opponents were blown-up light or welterweight. They were middle, or close to middleweight when they fought. Whereas Kaman sometimes took the Thais who were significantly lighter than him. In Japan, he had some 40 pound weight advantages against the Thais. Still, Kaman had lot more experience with fighting the Thais.
this fight was bullshit i was there eddie whipp his ass the whole fight granted they were both in their 40's dw did not want to fight eddie when he was younger because he was scared of him remember eddie fight a style called death ki do which was originated by his father and uncle which all are undeafeted
I'm not impressed by DW. He is slow and has poor form. Any of the latest K1 fighters would tear his ass up. Have you seen his movies? They suck just as bad as his fights. How the hell is this guy the best? Because he beat a hundred nobodies back in the 80s when Chuck Norris wore tight pants?
Wilson was 47 in this fight. What do you expect? In his heyday, Wilson was the champion who consistently defend his titles against top world rated contenders. In the process, he won more world titles than any of his contemporaries did. He was also one of the first Americans to fight the Thais, ended up with 4 wins and 1 loss against them. Without the sacrifices of the pioneers like Wilson, there would have been no K-1 today. Show some respect to those who came before today's fighters.
Absolutely without a doubt. I'll admit some of Don's fights were boring but he was technical in the use of the very few techniques he would fight with. He used those particular techniques because he chose to stay basic and not flashy. That's why he beat alot of fighters.
You're right. Wilson used very few techniques to win his fights. He's never been really a kicker. In fact, his ace-in-the-hole has always been his overhand right, and he's got the classic left hook. When he fights in southpaw, the lead hand right hook becomes the formidable weapon. Some champions have only a handful of weapons to do his jobs. Branco Cikatic was the same kind of fighter, who relied on his right hand or so, yet was able to KO the likes of Ernest Hoost.
What youre saying is not true. dw was always too chicken too fight Rob Kaman from Holland, because Rob was the only true champ in that time. All the titles dw has won were american titles, nothing more than that
It was Kaman, who was after the WKA light heavy crown, one ot the "American titles" Wilson held at that time. What's wrong with those "American titles" anyway?
There's nothing wrong about American titles, i respect them a lot. But don't just call any kind of title a world title.
I also have huge respect for Don Wilson, but just in mine opinion Don Wilson has not been a true world champion. A true champ fights anyone, anytime at anyplace.
He just knew Rob Kaman would knock him out on his legs.
Being a long time Rob Kaman fan, I know he would've been the biggest threat for Wilson, however saying Wilson not being a true champion is a real stretch. Even some great champions like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, etc had avoided some contenders for some reason. Even George Foreman said the job of the champion is to defend his title without risking it. I know not everyone agree with this, but this has been often the case.
You cannot knock those American titles. You have to start from somewhere else. The majority of old time fighters happened to be from the US, then eventually non-Americans began to fight for those American titles which eventually earned respect as world titles.
You're right with that. I always found there where much too many titles, but that's not just in America. Also in Holland this was a problem at that time. There were fighters who had won about 15 fights and already had a world title
This is one of the main reasons why i'm a great fan of K-1.
As much as I respect Kaman, there is one thing I found ridiculous about him. He knew he could make lot more money fighting Theriault and Roufus, then he beat Theriault, but lost to Roufus twice. Kaman criticized them as being incomplete fighters. Especially against Roufus, he wined about Roufus didn't accept to fight him in the legkick rules. He didn't realize Roufus or Theriault had no obligation to fight Kaman in those rules. The way Kaman acting like the Thais quite disappointed me.
I agree with you, it's not respectfull to criticize someone who beat you. And i know there were no obligations to fight Kaman in the other rules. But the power of Kaman were in his low kicks. That's the Mejiro Gym way of training.
May be he wanted to prove to the world that he was able to win, but only by fighting according to other rules.
dear friend, a REAL pro full contact match between two guys who both know what they're doing doesn't look nothing like a van damme movie. think about it. don is a great fighter
I used to catch some of his shitty B movies on cinemax around 3 in the morning. As far as american kickboxers go he's only second to benny the jet urquidez.
Don the dragon , first time ive seen you fught for real, sorry about the injury , saw a lot of your movies, real good , im instructor spoke highly of you, your a real champ, stay well,
I am Don "the Dragon" Wilson....5 days before this fight during my last day of sparring, I fractured one of my ribs. I had already been paid much of the fight purse upfront and rather than give the money back, fought 10 rounds injured. In the last round I threw harder shots because I was confident he would not go to the body. No fighter is the same on any given night...sometimes you win by first round KO and sometimes you barely go 12 for a close decision. thanks for the support, Dragon
Was that Eddie Butcher? I saw him a few months ago and he put on alot of weight. I fought one of his guys under full-contact rules which I had not done in awhile. I wasn't 100% mentally that day and it went to a draw.
Not so sure about that. He has great hooks and standup. But if he doesn't know how to work the ground, then it would be pointless entering the octagon. Nonetheless he has great standup and heart.
Different rules and all but after the excitement of Rob Kaman, or Ramon Dekkers fights this is hard to watch. I much much prefer full MT rules. Dragon fought mainly for points, and I'd rather see someone go in for the kill.
I should clarify something that didn't come out right in the original post. When I say mainly for points, I'm referring to the kick in the video he using (don't know what they'd call it) a snap and double snap kick that looks like it doesn't mean anything and must either be for points, or to distract the opponent.
Whatever dude Don Wilson had over 70 fights and was never knocked out. He fought harder guys then Benny The Jet did. Dude get in a kickboxing match with Don then if you beat him you can say he sucks.
Wilson defeated two ex-stadium champions of Thailand. Urquidez never did. Nothing to take away from Urquidez, but Wilson had a better record. But Urquidez is a better teacher.
@wing0120022000 i would say they were both great fighters with incredible warrior spirits. However at dons weight there are no good thais ,all the thais are bennys weight and lighter
@wing0120022000 what does defeating 2 champions from thailand have to do with anything oh and by the way don had 69 wins 5 losses and 2 draws where in benny had 58 wins 0 losses and 0 draws so who really has the better record benny wins
Another bull. Urquidez lost the decision to the rated Thai fighter named Prayoot Sitiboonlert in 78, and to Billye Jackson in West Palm Beach in 81. It is a well known fact that his record has been highly manipulated. He could not defeat a Thai fighter, but on the other hand, Wilson managed to defeat 2 ex-champions of Thailand.
If you simply prefer the way Urquidez fought, there is no problem. But Wilson had better record with more fights, tougher oppositions, and more titles.
@actionmanrandell its not the number of wins losses or draws that matters in a fighter. I am a fan of both urquidez and wilson. wilson fought at multiple weight classes against better opponents. Uriqiede is the shit, but face facts wilson is the better fighter.
@wing0120022000 Don Wilson was beaten by Samart Prasamit in Thailand. Prasamit was 20 pounds lighter too. Prasamit knocked Wilson down twice. The video used to be on Youtube. For no reason Howard Hansen who was president of the WKA changed the results to a No Contest. Fighters in those days unlike today did not want to fight in Thailand regularly. Wilson tried and did not succeed. People need to get their facts straight. He was great at Full-Contact Karate not all forms of Kickboxing.
Your account is bullshit. When Wilson arrived Bangkok, he was forced to lose some 8 pounds hours before the fight. He didn't expect to face the lightweight opponent. I did watch the fight and he was nothing like his normal self. As the round progressed, his hands were so low and his footwork was almost non-existent. As a matter of fact, Wilson wanted a rematch, but the Thai officials could not agree to pay the same amount of money.
@legkicker01 Of course he would have to lose weight. There are very few Thai fighters his size. In all fairness, most of the competitive Muay Thai opponents his size would have come from the Netherlands as opposed to Thailand. But I was just impressed that Prasamit gave him a pretty good lickin' being much smaller like Kaoklai did with Mighty Mo. Thailand had some tough fighters in the world of kickboxing. But yes Wilson was much larger than most of them and Urquidez was more their size.
You still don't get it. If he knew he would have to fight a lightweight earlier, he would've spent months to drop his weight, or simply given up the fight. Previously Wilson beat two ex-champs who were blown-up light/welterweight who fought as middleweight. Thus, he expected an opponent of closer weight range. It was the Thai officials' revenge and attempt to save their face.
@legkicker01 Well, if he had to drop weight at last minute then that would be detrimental. On another note, I keep hearing about these two ex-champs. Any idea what their names were and what do you mean by ex-champs? Like washed up ex champs or champs who recently went down in rankings but still actively fighting? There seems to be a trend in matching fighters against washed-up ex-champs just to say they beat an ex-champ. I get suspicious when no one knows their names.
Wilson's first Thai opponent, Jaidee Pisnurachank (aka Che Le, or Panya Sornnoi) was the Radjamnern Stadium lightweight champ in th 70s, and a top rated middleweight in the early 80s. Pongdienoi Prasobchai was the lightweight/junior welterweight champ(Radjamnern) and was still top rated in the early 80s. Wilson decisioned Jaidee to defend his WKA crown, but the rematch and the Pongdienoi fight were fought under the rules that were lot more closer to the Thai rule.
@legkicker01 Now that's the type of response I value. Thank you. I hate it when people just say some generic Thai champ, etc. as if they don't really know. What rules did he fight those two under? Full-contact, Full Thai Rule, Modified MT, or Kickboxing with no knees? Personally I still think Thai fighters are too light for him. Jerome Le Banner, Ernesto Hoost, Peter Smit, etc. were more his size. Nevertheless good response.
With the exeption of the first fight against Jaidee(which was under the WKA leg kick rule), the rest of his fights against the Thais were either under modified MT or full Thai rule. Jaidee was a tall, lanky lightweight, who could fight well as a middleweight toward the end of his career. Pongdienoi, on the other hand, was more of an average lightweight.
Speaking of too light, some of the Thais Rob Kaman fought were even more lighter than those who fought Wilson. Whether you like it or not, in those days fighters had to fight whoever available for them in order to get paid and keep the the sport alive. It's great you talk about the late Peter Smit. He said he wanted to fight Wilson next only if he could beat Maurice Smith, but unfortunately he lost.
@legkicker01 Here's a little to help you out. In September 1983 Wilson KOed Thai ex-Champ Pongdejoi Prasobchai in Hong Kong. Later the Thai promoters did want to save face and invited Wilson to Bangkok to fight Samart Prasamit. Wilson was not ready for the knee clinch and along with the sudden weight loss he lost to the much lighter fighter. In 1984 he fought an even lighter but better fighter, Fanta Petchumuangtrat, who was too much for Wilson under Muay Thai rules. Go TEAM AERTS!
The now defunct Karate Illustrated magainze reported the fight in detail, and mr. Hanson did not do such cowardly act, and in reality he mentioned the fact that Wilson fought in Thailand and lose in the voice over commentary for the Alexio fight. It is Benny Urquidez, who has no shame to turn his losses into no-contests, not Wilson.
disagree,,,,,,kaman bill wallace and jean yves theriault are right up there too whos best, who knows?wilson and theriault did fight though it was a draw
I would not say who is the best or something like that. To set the record straight, Wilson faced and defeated lot more quality opponents than Wallace or Theriault. He was the first full-contact fighter to defeat the Thais. As for Kaman, I still believe the fight between two should have happened since Kaman had been No.1 challenger for Wilson's lightheavy crown in the WKA rating.
i think a prime kaman vs wilson would go to kaman!just my oppinion thats all,,,top 10 kickboxers of all time kaman wilson bill wallace benny urquidez joe lewis(the karate legend) ramon dekkers ernesto hoost stan longinidis peter aerts jean theriault rick roufus jerome lebanner andy hug in no particular order, nothing but awe and rspect for them all
Personally, I respect all the martial arts, and the most important, in my humble opinion, is that a martial parcticioner should not be defeated by bullies on a street.
Oh and Maurice Smith. The only man in history to beat both these fighters (although I though Stan Longinidis beat Smith IMO). Don is the greatest period.
This fight took place in 2002. Wilson was 48. He entered the fight with a cracked rib on his right side. And it looked like he had a problem with punching with full leverage. This is not the same Don Wilson who beat a couple of Thai fighters and Branco Cikatic in the 80s.
Wilson beat Che Le(Panya Sornnoi)in '82, and Pongdienoi Prasobchai in 83. Both fights took place in Hong Kong. Some Thai officials got pissed off and invited Wilson to fight in Bangkok to fight with the huge sum of money. He was told to face a lighter opponent, and was forced to lose some weight hours before the fight. He lost the decision. Wilson never claimed he beat the best of Thailand or full-contact was superior to muay thai. Some of his opponents happened to be Thai fighters.
thats kool at least he never claimed that full contact karate or kickboxing was better than muay thai like all the other american kickboxer like Benny the Jet Urquindez. And plus those 2 thai fighters were probably just amueters. I bet those 2 fighters never ever faught in the Lumppini or Rajdamant Staduim
As far as I remember, those two Thais were at one time or another rated fighters either in the Lumpini or Radjamnern stadium. As of the early 80s, some Thai fighters began to fight in Hong Kong for a better financial opportunity. While they were not necessary the best of Thailand, they were not amateurs either. Wilson's reasoning of fighting Thai fighter was strictly financial. He was the highest paid figher in Hong Kong at that time.

When he fights in southpaw, the lead hand right hook becomes the formidable weapon. Some champions have only a handful of weapons to do his jobs. Branco Cikatic was the same kind of fighter, who relied on his right hand or so, yet was able to KO the likes of Ernest Hoost.
legkicker01 2 years ago
What youre saying is not true. dw was always too chicken too fight Rob Kaman from Holland, because Rob was the only true champ in that time. All the titles dw has won were american titles, nothing more than that
grobje68 2 years ago
It was Kaman, who was after the WKA light heavy crown, one ot the "American titles" Wilson held at that time. What's wrong with those "American titles" anyway?
legkicker01 2 years ago
There's nothing wrong about American titles, i respect them a lot. But don't just call any kind of title a world title.
I also have huge respect for Don Wilson, but just in mine opinion Don Wilson has not been a true world champion. A true champ fights anyone, anytime at anyplace.
He just knew Rob Kaman would knock him out on his legs.
grobje68 2 years ago
Being a long time Rob Kaman fan, I know he would've been the biggest threat for Wilson, however saying Wilson not being a true champion is a real stretch. Even some great champions like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, etc had avoided some contenders for some reason. Even George Foreman said the job of the champion is to defend his title without risking it. I know not everyone agree with this, but this has been often the case.
legkicker01 2 years ago
You cannot knock those American titles. You have to start from somewhere else. The majority of old time fighters happened to be from the US, then eventually non-Americans began to fight for those American titles which eventually earned respect as world titles.
legkicker01 2 years ago
You're right with that. I always found there where much too many titles, but that's not just in America. Also in Holland this was a problem at that time. There were fighters who had won about 15 fights and already had a world title
This is one of the main reasons why i'm a great fan of K-1.
grobje68 2 years ago
As much as I respect Kaman, there is one thing I found ridiculous about him. He knew he could make lot more money fighting Theriault and Roufus, then he beat Theriault, but lost to Roufus twice. Kaman criticized them as being incomplete fighters. Especially against Roufus, he wined about Roufus didn't accept to fight him in the legkick rules. He didn't realize Roufus or Theriault had no obligation to fight Kaman in those rules. The way Kaman acting like the Thais quite disappointed me.
legkicker01 2 years ago
I agree with you, it's not respectfull to criticize someone who beat you. And i know there were no obligations to fight Kaman in the other rules. But the power of Kaman were in his low kicks. That's the Mejiro Gym way of training.
May be he wanted to prove to the world that he was able to win, but only by fighting according to other rules.

Different rules and all but after the excitement of Rob Kaman, or Ramon Dekkers fights this is hard to watch. I much much prefer full MT rules. Dragon fought mainly for points, and I'd rather see someone go in for the kill.
zigzzagz1 4 years ago
I should clarify something that didn't come out right in the original post. When I say mainly for points, I'm referring to the kick in the video he using (don't know what they'd call it) a snap and double snap kick that looks like it doesn't mean anything and must either be for points, or to distract the opponent.
zigzzagz1 4 years ago
48 ko out of 72 wins thats a pretty good kill rate don fought smart not wild and crazy thats why he was 11x world champ

Wilson defeated two ex-stadium champions of Thailand. Urquidez never did. Nothing to take away from Urquidez, but Wilson had a better record. But Urquidez is a better teacher.
wing0120022000 4 years ago 5
@wing0120022000 i would say they were both great fighters with incredible warrior spirits. However at dons weight there are no good thais ,all the thais are bennys weight and lighter
billysue2 1 year ago
@wing0120022000 what does defeating 2 champions from thailand have to do with anything oh and by the way don had 69 wins 5 losses and 2 draws where in benny had 58 wins 0 losses and 0 draws so who really has the better record benny wins
actionmanrandell 1 year ago
Another bull. Urquidez lost the decision to the rated Thai fighter named Prayoot Sitiboonlert in 78, and to Billye Jackson in West Palm Beach in 81. It is a well known fact that his record has been highly manipulated. He could not defeat a Thai fighter, but on the other hand, Wilson managed to defeat 2 ex-champions of Thailand.
legkicker01 1 year ago
@legkicker01 don wilson sucks compared to urquidez no way around it
actionmanrandell 1 year ago
If you simply prefer the way Urquidez fought, there is no problem. But Wilson had better record with more fights, tougher oppositions, and more titles.
legkicker01 1 year ago

H8lowlives 1 year ago
@H8lowlives
As a matter of fact, Wilson wanted a rematch, but the Thai officials could not agree to pay the same amount of money.
legkicker01 1 year ago
@legkicker01 Of course he would have to lose weight. There are very few Thai fighters his size. In all fairness, most of the competitive Muay Thai opponents his size would have come from the Netherlands as opposed to Thailand. But I was just impressed that Prasamit gave him a pretty good lickin' being much smaller like Kaoklai did with Mighty Mo. Thailand had some tough fighters in the world of kickboxing. But yes Wilson was much larger than most of them and Urquidez was more their size.
H8lowlives 1 year ago
@H8lowlives
It was the Thai officials' revenge and attempt to save their face.
legkicker01 1 year ago
@legkicker01 Well, if he had to drop weight at last minute then that would be detrimental. On another note, I keep hearing about these two ex-champs. Any idea what their names were and what do you mean by ex-champs? Like washed up ex champs or champs who recently went down in rankings but still actively fighting? There seems to be a trend in matching fighters against washed-up ex-champs just to say they beat an ex-champ. I get suspicious when no one knows their names.
H8lowlives 1 year ago
@H8lowlives
Wilson decisioned Jaidee to defend his WKA crown, but the rematch and the Pongdienoi fight were fought under the rules that were lot more closer to the Thai rule.
legkicker01 1 year ago
@legkicker01 Now that's the type of response I value. Thank you. I hate it when people just say some generic Thai champ, etc. as if they don't really know. What rules did he fight those two under? Full-contact, Full Thai Rule, Modified MT, or Kickboxing with no knees? Personally I still think Thai fighters are too light for him. Jerome Le Banner, Ernesto Hoost, Peter Smit, etc. were more his size. Nevertheless good response.
H8lowlives 1 year ago
@H8lowlives
With the exeption of the first fight against Jaidee(which was under the WKA leg kick rule), the rest of his fights against the Thais were either under modified MT or full Thai rule. Jaidee was a tall, lanky lightweight, who could fight well as a middleweight toward the end of his career. Pongdienoi, on the other hand, was more of an average lightweight.
legkicker01 1 year ago
@H8lowlives

H8lowlives 1 year ago
@H8lowlives

This fight took place in 2002. Wilson was 48. He entered the fight with a cracked rib on his right side. And it looked like he had a problem with punching with full leverage. This is not the same Don Wilson who beat a couple of Thai fighters and Branco Cikatic in the 80s.
wing0120022000 5 years ago 3
Don wilson neva beated any Thai kickboxers.
Wat r u smoking?
Nhia89 5 years ago
Wilson beat Che Le(Panya Sornnoi)in '82, and Pongdienoi Prasobchai in 83. Both fights took place in Hong Kong. Some Thai officials got pissed off and invited Wilson to fight in Bangkok to fight with the huge sum of money. He was told to face a lighter opponent, and was forced to lose some weight hours before the fight. He lost the decision. Wilson never claimed he beat the best of Thailand or full-contact was superior to muay thai. Some of his opponents happened to be Thai fighters.
wing0120022000 5 years ago
thats kool at least he never claimed that full contact karate or kickboxing was better than muay thai like all the other american kickboxer like Benny the Jet Urquindez. And plus those 2 thai fighters were probably just amueters. I bet those 2 fighters never ever faught in the Lumppini or Rajdamant Staduim
Nhia89 4 years ago
As far as I remember, those two Thais were at one time or another rated fighters either in the Lumpini or Radjamnern stadium. As of the early 80s, some Thai fighters began to fight in Hong Kong for a better financial opportunity. While they were not necessary the best of Thailand, they were not amateurs either. Wilson's reasoning of fighting Thai fighter was strictly financial. He was the highest paid figher in Hong Kong at that time.
