The years immediately after the war are what interests me and you see very little about it anywhere. It would be interesting to see the first stores opening, the first factories churning out product and the first new and restored buildings rising out of the ashes.
@ha63 See on google earth, there are aerial photos of berlin, 1945-1950, I guess. There are some videos here that shows images of berlin in 1945-47, I think.
For suitable music, I recommend Metamorphosen by Richard Strauss: the 81-year-old composer wrote this touching piece in 1945 as a lamentation on his ruined homeland (now happily restored).
You're welcome! The music that you use is pretty good, but for me Metamorphosen is especially suitable. BTW I'm not a GREAT admirer of Strauss, tho' I think he was an able composer.
Ironic that both Germany and Japan did so well after their defeat. Such a shame Hitler caused so much suffering to his own people and brought about the destruction of such wonderful historic cities. I have much admiration for Germany would rather be with them than against them. I think they have made a bigger contribution to Europe since 45 than any other nation. Sadly I don't see a great deal my own country can be proud of post war. Great Britain LOL!!!!
Very well done! If you want to learn about the real German people, read up on the "Economic Miracle" and Konrad Adenauer. Then, read up on what it took for West Germany to absorb East Germany and all the problems that came with the Eastern Sector. And still, amidst all this economic and financial uncertainty in the world, Germany remains among the most solid of economies. What happened from 1933 to 1945 could have happened anywhere. It may happen again. But, never again in Germany.
As someone of German ancestry, I am proud of how the Germans have faced up to their past, acknowledged the great crime of the Holocaust, and have come back to the light. I heard the deutschlandied played after an Olympic win on TV once, and it was the opposite of the Nazi version: it was Germany as something beautiful, even grand, but as fragile as human feeling, as vulnerable, easily drowned out, wrecked by cruelty. I wish my America could learn that lesson.
My father was dropped into France as part of the 101st Airborne and he had immense respect for the German people and their fighting men! He despised the French for capitulating and many for collaborating, yet he felt many Frenchmen that attacked and abused French women after the war were far more responsible for Frances' defeat! My Dad had complete respect for the brave German soldier, yet did not try to keep guards from the death camps from being executed by jewish prisoners! Germany is great!
The French lost more that 2 million men in 1940. How can they continue to fight conventional warfare after that? And they did fight back. Free French forces & resistance.
Theres always collaboration when a nation is occupied. Someone must do it, for law & order to continue. Its very easy for the ones who arent involved to criticise.
@sansez ---I did not claim there were no French that fought a gallant resistance in WW2! But the fact is that the French gov't declared Paris an open city in order to keep Paris from combat damage, even if the city was being given to a conquering force! The typical reaction is to claim that no one who wasn't involved is a coward and would have collaborated also, but there are some people that don't collaborate and do not accept occupation! I might not have been in combat ,but my Dad did not lie!
Im not saying that your dad was a liar. If he fought the Nazis then he was a good man.
But we cant forget that the main reason that the French surrendered Paris was because they were fighting the most evil regime ever to exist. The Nazis deliberate destroyed the city of Guernica, Warsaw & Rotterdam from air. The French fought on 2 fronts (Italy attacked from the South), and they fought for 2 more weeks after Paris fell
@sansez ---I respect your ideas , but official records list the French losses as of capitulation at 120,000, for the whole war, their losses are listed as 250,000! As we all know, the casualties from just the Battle of the Bulge at 90,000 for Americans! The utter millions of deaths suffered by by the Russians, the Germans, and especially the samurai soldiers of Japan illustrates the price other countries were willing to pay in their attempts to defend their homelands! They refused a negotiat
Prisoners of war, mass encirclements. Almost 2 million.
Britain had the channel sea protecting it. Russia had vast land, natural resources, US support and manpower (180 million). Lets not forget that the Germans captured 3 million Soviets and they still kept fighting.
Many sources (incluiding the BBC documentary) claims that Stalin (using the Bulgarian Ambassador) basically offered another Brest-Litovsk, an armistice handing Germany the Baltic states, Poland, a large slice of Ukraine and some of Belorussiain 1941. But Hitler wasn't interested as he thought he could have it all. The Russians are still refusing to releases the documents. But i must say, still to be proven
@sansez ---As a lifelong history nut, I have read of all kinds of offers, counter offers and dirty deals supposedly brokered between the German Chancellor and the Russian dictator! Hitler did want it all, but I do believe if he had been knowledgeable of the limitless industrial power of America and their willingness to arm Russia free of charge, he might have very well considered Stalins' offer! Perhaps the most notorious and far reaching dirty deal of WW2 was the deal FDR made to create Israel!
The 240,000 who were killed in Warsaw (wiki) by the Luftwaffe in Sept 1939 did not deserve to be killed nor did the hundreds of thousands murdered by Einsatzgruppen nor the millions, shot, gassed, hung, beaten or starved to death in the camps but they died nonetheless. Those who died in London by the V2 rockets which were still falling while Dresen was being bombed did not deserve to die. Boming stopped the poison gas made in Chemische Fabrik Goye in Dresden from killing many more people.

Germany was already a great power before WW1. Industrial, technological and scientific. Won more Nobel prizes than France, Russia, UK and the US combined.
@sansez Nobel prizes do not represent the richness of a country or the needs of its people. and also not fill the belly of the people. in the years 1800 to 1900,30s... the world was into an economic crises of poverty and lack of jobs, otherwise would not have had wars or the Rize of Nazism and Communism in the world. with all respect, you should not say this to me. but for the people of that time. tell them what you told me if you have corage to do it. that they where rich and got everything.
@sansez 1-if things were so good and everyone was rich and had everything. why the whole world was in economic crisis? and why communism came to power? if everything was so great? I said that before the WWII germany had nothing because they were overwhelmed by the outcome of the first war or am I wrong? the Treaty of Versailles by chance is a myth now? just because a country has education and industry or study does not mean that the people are happy or rich or the people have everything.
@sansez first what came after the WWI was not Communism. but a wave of fascism throughout the world, Germany, Japan, Italy, England, Brazil, Portugal and several others. the only and poor communist country was Soviet Union and it was nothing before WWII compared to the other world powers. And the American economy depends on the global economy, if the world has economic problem the U.S. will have too! the proof is the crisis of 1929. or you think the EUA are the only part of the world markets?
@sansez 2.In 1900 almost 80% of the population were working class. they had no rights. no law to protect the simple things that any human being should have. and before 1900 all people of Europe rushed to the "American dream" on the other side of the Atlantic simply to have an opportunity in the hope of a better life. and you still say that europe and germany have everything? as it has so much courage to say so Again my dear friend I say. Nobel prizes do not fill the belly of the people.
Thats a good thing, they're the core of every society. They produce.
German workers had rights. Germany was the 1st country to create the welfare state in 1800's. Old age pensions, accident insurance, medical care and unemployment insurance. US had higher wages but not rights
@sansez When I Say That 80% Were workers say this because I was Exploited by 80% The Other 30% of the Rich and Powerful people. Germany indeed had good rights for workers. but it was not enough. poverty in Germany after the first war Brought Hitler to power and everyone Knows it. and even for workers "with rights" we all know That the life of workers in 1800-1900 was horrible in Almost Every country in the world.otherwise would not have had a mass migration of the Europe for the "American Dream"
@sansez 3.if you read carefully what I wrote initially, I never said that Germany was nothing before WWI. I said that Germany was nothing before WWII because it was subjugated because of WWI. If you think that Germany was riches and powerful after WWI. I let the Germans answer that question for me. If Germany was as well as you say. after WWI there would be no reason for Hitler rose to power in the first place.is a crime against the story say that life was rich, good and just in the years 1900
@sansez if you think that is a rich and good life...I suggest that you review your concepts my friend. the people of 1900 suffered many injustices and exploitation. million people migrating from Europe to America in hopes of improving life. there was not even sanitation. in europe people poured urine on the street that do not even have bathrooms in the years 1870-1900. this is a good life? a rich life?
@sansez --The world consistently pays a price for a seemingly inability to accept nature when it comes to human nature! You cannot force morality(whatever that means) on human beings! Anyone who condemns the entire German population as"immoral"because of WW2 and the resulting Jewish genocide is wrong! How could the complaining folks believe they would resist an all powerful gov't like that of Hitlers', under the threat of imprisonment and or death? Americans aren't even resisting black furher!
@oOAndrewsOo Very well, but this does affirm his beliefs in his own people- despite the face of the globe annihilating (unnecessarily) the Third Reich, 50 years later, they are most successful in Europe.
@ssoberstgroupandfuhr i can't deny that hitler was a very inters thing man and i can't deny that he did many amazing and good things to the german people and also to others germanics peoples... and to europe in general... indeed... you are right...
this video made me think about the concept of "the Civilized word" . Germany was in that time a civilized country, and it was responsible for such devastation. My question is: it happened once, what will prevent an other civilized country to do just the same? Or are we not that civilized as we think?
we are the most resourceful of all nations and we will always come back, no matter what is thrown at us and what obstacles we have yet to face in the future.
I am currently reading Hugh Trevor Roper's great classic ' The Last Daysof Hitler ' and found the images and music a powerful evocation of the tragedy and senseless suffering of the time.
incredible to see that the so called "civilized world" was capable of so much that violence and destruction.
Anyway, there is no bad times without a lesson. What impresses me is the Europe that emerged after the war. That old climate of war, disputes and hates was turned into union and peace, which lead to UE.
если бы они победили для них было бы ещё круче

Anyway, there is no bad times without a lesson. What impresses me is the Europe that emerged after the war. That old climate of war, disputes and hates was turned into union and peace, which lead to UE.

This is amazing, you have made a beautiful interpretation from the tragedy of War to the return of a Nation. Thank you for sharing.
