Of course his Italian is good - he loved listening to Mario Lanza and Caruso recordings when he was younger. :) And sure, he didn't take the same operatic path as Pavarotti or Placido Domingo (they also listened to Lanza and Caruso), but honestly, you can't say he sang this badly. He didn't see any barriers when it came to music - just because he sang RnR didn't mean he couldn't try gospel, country, blues, pop and, in this case, a 1849 barcarolla. What's so bad about that?

He sang "Wooden Heart" in half German, half English pretty well. He sings this 19th century song in flawless Italian, and considering that he was a southern guy whose real genres were rock 'n roll, lyric gospel and heck knows what else, you can't help but respect him. It's hard to think this is the same voice that sang "Jailhouse Rock," "Trouble" and "Return to Sender." Try imagining any of the artists of today doing a fraction of what he did.
