So Frusciante was my favorite member of the Chili Peppers (if I had to pick which is already a stupid question) and he might be my favorite artist of all time......but in terms of vocals he really did need Kiedis' voice up front because while his is amazing for harmonies he just really can't bring a sick lead voice. For everyone who is going to hate this comment don't forget what I said at the beginning....his artistry is an essential element of my life, I'm just being objective about vocals.

@turoniner have you heard his solo records? he does lead on pretty much all of the songs and theyre really good.. omission and song to sing when i'm lonely are examples of where he just totally sings great he CAN sing lead he just merely CHOOSES to sing a little messy on some songs and cleaner on others... its all about the tone you want on the song and hee he was going for a messy punk kind of style

@bddb9 Anybody can sound clean in the studio. They can do 30 takes and clean it up with mixing etc. And trust me, this isn't the work of an expert vocalist purposefully distorting his voice. "Punk style" is all about hiding ineptitude with distortion which is what is happening here. He can do good falsetto leads when he covers Maybe etc but beyond that it's just not a trained, soulful, thunderous voice and his pitch accuracy is meh. Again......LOVE his artistry, he's just NOT a lead singer.

@turoniner his voice has improved alot over the years and his voice on the records from 2001 was pretty much like this, omission for example was recorded in 2004 along with some other albums and he had alot better voice by then and in 2010 his voice is even far better... back in 2001 he didnt care about perfect, its all about the emotion <3

@snabelsnas Honestly......and for the last time......ANYONE can sound good in the studio. You can use pitch corrector, compression, delay, reverb ETC to sound very full in the studio. The real question is can you pull it off LIVE and John Frusciante, my favorite music maker of all time, cannot. Kiedis can really SING properly. It took him until Californication/By the Way and lots of voice coaching/training but he learned how to. Anyone could, JF just hasn't yet...
