  • I was watching Michael Mann's Heat the other day, and it struck me that both Tom Noonan (Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter) and Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs) were in it.

  • unfair to compare fiennes' performance with him. fiennes' dolarhyde was way more complex and pitiable. but noonan's was scary, chilling. 1986 was great year for serial killers. francis dolarhyde and frank booth!!!!

  • Noonan owned that role!

And those tats looked pretty cool!

And was true to the book.

  • I <3 him sooooo much. xxx :)

  • Tom Noonan was also good as a preacher in that Jack Nicholson film The Pledge. One of his rare good guy roles, and still he was good. Roger Ebert once wrote that any film with Harry Dean Stanton in it can't be that bad. I agree. Alpha Dog rocked. Any film with Tom Noonan in it is worth watching, too.

  • Def Best was The Ripper in Last Action Hero, Manhunter, solid 2nd, Gil Grissom fucking up your day is overrated

  • You can't help but love this guy!!!!!!

  • he's also in a very under-rated movie called knock around guys (at least i enjoyed it). yea, what a great actor and manhunter is one of my favorite movies of all time. just became available on bluray though it has to be purchased as a set (with silence of the lambs and hannibal)

  • I wouldn't have the patience to have all that tatoo drawn on me. I should drink till I pass out, then they could give me that tattoo.

  • Tom is one of the most beautiful, sensitive and artistically bold artists I have ever met. Michael Mann's direction combined with Tom's presence is most likely the reason why this film is a classic. With few words Tom's sensitivity is beautifully captured. It is not hard to understand why so many people are drawn to this film--Tom is the emotional anchor.

  • Most underrated movie villain ever.

  • I agree with jjmrdirector.

  • it's a shame the tattoo never made it into the actual movie

  • he and Brian Cox made this movie a classic.. that- and an AMAZING soundtrack.

  • Tom Noonan absolutely magnetic in that role-shame about the sub par remake- the original is a classic-

  • I'll be one to say I think they should have kept the tattoo. Mann believed it trivializes the character, but it gives the sort of "Hyde" side that was the killer, as opposed to the shy personality of Francis. He looks like a fucked up evil Cirque Du Solei performer

  • Noonan > Fiennes

    drumroll...

    Cox > Hopkins

  • whatever makes you happy! lol

  • i agree.

  • Funny when actors who often play villains come off as so mellow and laid back

  • He's got a gorgeous voice. Makes his character more sympathetic in a way.

  • I honestly felt Noonan deserved a Supporting Oscar nomination for his role as Dollarhyde. Can you think of any other film in which an actor garnered any measure of sympathy for a serial killer? Noonan was incredible.

  • Noonan captured the torment but neither he or fiennes captured the physicality of the character as written.

  • Noonan was great in the role of Dolorhyde.

  • kakah102 don't be silly tom noonan was perfect as dollarhyde, i can't believe you think ralph fiennes was better lol, he was so unconvincing as dollarhyde,Tom Noonan as Francis Dolarhyde, shows in his great performance that he can be gentle and appreciative of art and nature, and of a woman who desires only him; but, he can also be so twisted that he thinks he must kill to make himself whole again. Ralph fiennes performance showed neither he was just a big wimp.

  • kakah102 don't be silly tom noonan was perfect as dollarhyde he is dollarhyde, Ralph Fiennes was ok at best, he was too much of a wimp as dollarhyde so unconvicing, Francis Dolarhyde (Noonan), shows that he can be gentle and appreciative of art and nature, and of a woman who desires only him; but, he can also be so twisted that he thinks he must kill to make himself whole again. Ralph fiennes had neither.

  • I agree, Fiennes is a great actor but Noonan was exactly the Dragon you'd expect after reading the book. He's smart and cunning, and like you said gentle but Fiennes was a crybaby mama's boy which we always associate with a delusional psycho killer nowadays. He was a cartoon character. What Lounds wrote about him actually seemed totally plausible considering the way he acted. It was also a lot easier to sympathize with Noonan.

  • Tom Noonan is my favorite actor. His performance in "Manhunter" is overwhelming.

  • criminally underated actor.

  • ABSOLUTELY... I can't believe it took william peterson so long to be recognized

  • @loveupskirts absolutely... but that kind of adds to his mystique. if that makes sense

  • Excellent actor.

    A nice guy, also.

    Um Abraço, Tom!
