Seing Fignons reaction after he realized he lost the tour is just heartbreaking.Even more now that he is gone. Some people thought he was arrogant and dislikable.I however thought he was a true champ who always made cycling more interesting. He was´nt out to please the press he just wanted to race and do it in a "Big" way.
It's professional sports, not a checkers match with your little sister. You're going to try and win, not let the other person win because he's the "hometown hero".
I think he means steal victory from the hometown hero on the last day of the Tour, having to overcome the largest deficit ever. Being Belgian, of course I am a fan of Eddy Merckx, but not even he did what LeMond did.
Ok; though I'm sure he could have if he'd been in the same position. (Sadly, "hometown hero" isn't quite the term for Fignon . . . Lemond was probably more popular in Fignon's hometown that Fignon was.)
Yeah, I know. I was referring to the way that Fignon had always been cooly received by the French because of his aloofness. Ironically he became a much more sympathetic character to them because of this defeat!
laurent fignon didnt wear any aero gear because he wanted to win with french 'panache'. oops! perhaps a little less bravado and more focus.
fignon also said that his butt was so sore, he couldnt sit down thus creating more aero drag and the more reason to wear ANYTHING aero. oh well...geek will always beat brawn.
I love the term "geek" for LeMond! He used it to describe himself: "I'm such a geek about cycling". As for the aero gear, LeMond's bars were a huge advantage, but it seems that his helmet was more of a handicap than anything else. He later described it as a parachute, and it would have been okay aerodynamically if he held his head straight, which he didn't do at all.. he was constantly moving it up and down during that TT. The following years on the Tour he rode several TT bare-headed.

@YuTubeOO, The aero bars didn't, but his doping did.

the single most amazing feat I have ever seen at teh tour de france. Armstrong nor Merckx ever did anything like this.

What, you mean that they never took a minute out of an opponent in a shortish time trial? Sure they did!

True, but I use hometown hero because Fignon was originally from Paris, so I'm sure there were some Parisians rooting for him.

@sjl62 The French love losers, they can relate to it.

@dredandmrbears Oh fuck off. I have no time for cumdumpsters like you.

@sjl62 Gee whiz I agree with you. No sense of humor, huh. The same thing occurred with Armstrong when he was no longer the favorite.
