In NJ, my company builds two story modulars from PA for $90 sq. ft. turn key. I priced out a 40' container purchased for $1500, 2x4 16" O.C., insulated, kitchen, bathroom, 3 windows, plumbed, and wired for about $15-20k. Thats $60 sq. ft. Im sold on building one for myself but two main issues will confront me, ventilation heating and central air, and of course, zoning. Where can i build one because i know NJ townships wont let me.
Yup, due to the USA importing WAY more goods than we export to China, there is a HUGE surplus of them sitting around. They cost more to ship them back empty than to create new ones in China (where virtually all shipping containers are made).
If he used spray foam insulation it would be what drove his cost up so high but it is the absolute best and will offer returns in energy savings. With a metal building you can use insulation that is anchored with little steele nail looking things that are quickly installed with an arc of electricity. We used them in the ship building industry. You can inuslate with spray on newspaper or even fiberglass. Use the metal to your advantage why not use magnets from old reftigerator doors glued to insu
I have been driving shipping containers around Bermuda for over 20 years and have suggested this as a way of helping our housing crisis. This is the best conversion I have seen yet.

I worked on the zigloo house, and it was very quiet once the doors are close. The spray foam insulation greatly dampen the noise.
IMHO, it is possible to built a similar container home for less than $150 sqf.
