  • maldita sea no hablo ingles

  • Love it. So accurate and precise.

  • Is he playing that from memory?

  • @kejsport Yeah :D

  • Since my Spanish is so poor, and I am embarrassed to have it seen or heard, I will reply in English only. I had a famous musician on my fathers side of the family. Until the day he passed away, he played his trumpet. Until the day he passed away, he was always looking for more work and working. He loved to play the trumpet, and those around him became enthralled with his playing. If you work harder than everyone else, and you play from your heart, people will feel it and want more.

  • Sometimes I wonder... there are some musicians that are really good, and have the potential to be famous, but do not make it. For example, this guy is godly amazing and noticably better than others, but what makes them better? How do they do it? I am 14 years old and I have been playing for 4 years. I recently bought a King Silverflare and want to get seriously involved in trumpet and doing research on musicians and he is a good model. GO RAFAEL!!!!! (even though he passed, sadly)

Tengo 14 años y he estado jugando durante 4 años. RAFAEL GO !!!!! (a pesar de que pasó, por desgracia).

  • Genio

  • Best trumpet player ever. Period.

  • He was a very well educated musician let's say. There are excellent trumpet players today but Mendez had a great knowledge and all my respects for him and his family. Saludos

  • Arturo Sandoval is pretty good. Don't forget about him as well.

  • @aznnemisis right but this guy makes him look like a 6 year old playing a pocket trumpet

-see "Little Bobby Harrison, Trumpet player"

  • im just wondering is that a b flat horn or e horn

  • @MsSuperguy1 It's b flat

  • I love how he plays the ending. I have never heard anyone else even attempt to play the ending like he does!

  • Don't fall over Mr. Mendez!!

  • damn this song is just the best song and best player i have ever heard. :D

  • By far, Mendez is THE BEST EVER.

  • anybody else notice that you couldnt see his valves move at about 425

  • @doofendot9 yes because in that segment of the melody you are playing the natural harmonics of the open tube, (no fingers) like a small fan fare major triad.

  • @doofendot9

LMAO Those Are Fast Fingers !

    He's The Best !

  • amazing!

  • Mendez played a French Besson until about 1947, when he signed on with Olds. He played a "Recording" model until Olds had created a special model form him -- The mendez (designed by Foster Reynolds). The Mendez model has a .460" med. large bore.

I play one made in Los Angeles in 1954, prior to Olds' move to Fullerton.

    Incredible horns, these Mendez models.

Far better than the Model 37 Bach I used to play.

  • My god...he even did that on a Bb trumpet, instead of an Eb trumpet.

  • @IvanMoneypants No kidding! lol

  • is that a Besson or an Olds?

  • Eu Sou Brasileiro Você Fala Demais

  • Rafeal Mendez was a very proud and great musician, All i hear is a great solid sound and somebody enjoying what they are doing, sure his style isn't exactly one of "a classical player" but you have to understand. He grew up playing Mariachi trumpet You do not have to sound a certain way to be considered a "good trumpet player" he just grew up playing one style and loved all music so much he played them all. He is an amazing trumpet player and inspires me to play. That's a professional. »='''=<|

  • @JDTrumpetTony You're right - Rafael was incredible. I have to admit, the tempo of this song seemed a little too fast, but at the same time, it is more difficult to play that concerto at such a tempo. Rafael is one of the few that could have pulled that off so gracesully. He was awsome!

  • who dislikes this?!?!

  • Rafael was the best trumpet player who ever lived.

  • He plays as if he was the Jesus of Trumpet Playing

  • @Tromb0ne22 cuz he is!!

  • super man

  • HEY "CPTHORNMAN"... GO SUCK A DICK AND MAYBE YOU'LL FIND THE ""CLASSICAL TONE"" YOUR LOOKING FOR!!! YOU FLORIDA EVANS OFF THE GOOD TIMES LOOKIN COCKSUCKER!!!!!

  • @starmaine23 No need for language like this in this forum. Come on. This is great music. Enjoy it or don't comment. These kind of comments detract from the artistry and musicianship of all involved. Let's exchange musical ideas instead.

  • @starmaine23 Wow. Someone needs to chill out. Just too much vibrato for my taste. Great for jazz but I question it for classical rep.

  • Not a classical tone at all.

  • @cpthornman trumpet playing has evolved so much over the past centuries. who's to say that it's not a classical tone? remember, instruments were of a different quality back in those days. Besides, for all we know Haydn could have wanted his concerto to sound like that!

  • What a great trumpet sound! Super job! I love Jesus.

  • whoa are his finger really moving that fast!!!!!????

  • Im a euphonium player of whom is seriously thinking of changing instruments lol

  • Yeah. That's the way of playing classics. Not the deshydrated historical approach.

  • A son of Michoacan

  • just the look on his face when he plays looks so natural yet hes been playing for years ... great performance !!!!

  • When Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) writed this Trumpet Concerto in 1796 he would be illuminated, is because these masterpieces how it that I feel me proud and happy of to be a human, the perfect interpretation, congratulations to Rafael Mendez of!!

  • @Australlopytekus its josf hayden

  • THE TRUE MASTER BLASTER AT WORK.

  • STand still!!!!

  • outstanding

  • LMAO watch with CC

  • @koolmoedee95

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • No one will be able to get this kinda tone in future =/

  • Where did they hide the cortex connection to the horn? This is black and white...trick photography wasn't done well back then. Goofs aside, as much as I admire any talent, this man was a one of a kind genius on the trumpet as much as Michelangelo was with stone and Einstein in physics. I'd go on but I already hear the storm approaching.

  • i wish i had a time machine to go back and hear him play live, it must've been amazing

  • @koolmoedee95 I did hear him play live and I attended a clinic for high school students in which he played the Mexican Hat Dance on one breath while dancing around the hat. One of a kind.

  • @masterflykiller He could probably heal deaf people, you are one lucky person

  • @koolmoedee95 I couldn't agree more

  • awesome!

  • wow, this is a piece of HISTORY!

    Outstanding!

Nobody plays this concerto like this today. That may be a good thing or not.

However, his interpretation is among the old that we have so who can really argue.

Regardless, his technique is flawless and his articulation is crispier that KFC.

Truly it is out of this world! Sergei Nakariakov's articulation is today's closest equivalent that I know of; his is probably modeled after Mendez.

  • Ludwig Guttler had the best interpretation of this piece in my opinion.

  • @cunnilicker Sadly, we don't have recordings of Mendez that are of the quality as the recordings made today, so there's no way to compare fairly. However, Helsing is indeed much prettier!

  • @71259mark I think you can tell by this audio that his fast vibrato and hard attacks are inferior to Helseth's elegant playing in a piece like this....for this time period anyway.

  • You can just tell by his sound that he could play another 3 days non-stop before beginning to get tired.

  • if the trumpet player can play anything in the cadenza, then how does the orchestra know when to come back?

  • @knightd3vil4 Big cue I guess...

  • @knightd3vil4 The soloist and conductor work it out in advance.

  • @knightd3vil4 There is a cadence in the cadenza to indicate to the orchestra that the cadenza has come to a close. Most of the time, this is the same for every performer. If it is not the same as normal, the cue would be worked out during rehearsal.

  • Is rafael mendez still alive??

  • No, he died in 1981. You can check out his bio in Wikipedia.

  • Hispanic, great guy and his first language is Spanish, doesn't surprise me why the USA try to exploit his talent. Rafael mendez

  • @piontro What do you mean, sxploit?

  • He's staccato is excactly like Andre's.

  • i love the ending :)))

  • Wonderful -- this recording has allowed me to make a nice ringtone: I was looking for one where the trumpet would be really loud and stand well on top of the orchestral background of the piece :) I love the Haydn's Trumpet Concerto!

  • I want that accent.

  • I played in a festival today, and the judge said that every person who plays this piece plays in SLIGHTLY differently.

  • lol

    at 3:23

the dirigent looks like bernhard hoecker xD

  • @jhclov jajajja

  • Very well done. Too bad the recording quality isn't that good.

  • There is something really off about his interpretation of this piece. It sounds "stylistically incorrect." However, setting the piece aside, he is a good player.

  • I can't believe my eyes. You must be pretty young and obviously don't know Mendez. Is his interpretation different? Yes. However, what is "proper?" Until Winton played the cadenza in the first movement in his 1981 recording, Haydn - as played by everyone - was dead. Winton gave it life.

As did Mendez. We grew up on his artistry and fantastic abilities. You must be too young to have. There is no "proper way" to play Haydn today. In fact, it was hardly performed until well into this century...

  • Never said anything about the keyed trumpet. And from what I understand, you weren't around in 1796 to hear from Haydn himself how he wanted it to sound. Trumpets change with time, style and tone change with trumpets.

I didn't say anything about it not being played for the original trumpet it was written for.

  • Oh my gosh I totally agree with everything you've said!

I'm a junior in college studying trumpet and someone in my section showed me this and I was somewhat disgusted with it!

It's a shame so many people idolize this performance of the Haydn, just because it's Mendez. Is Mendez good? Absolutely. But he should not be used as a model for this piece.

  • Also, not trolling, just being informative. Wynton is not my personal favorite, but he does have a very good recording of the Haydn, arguably the most popular and standard piece of trumpet repertoire. Unlike Mendez, who is don't get me wrong, amazing, but just not a person for a true aspiring trumpet player to listen to while working up this piece. Is his performance good? Sure- just not the best standard to go to.

  • his tonguing is just unbelievable...of course it´s not an authentic recording from Haydn´s concerto, but for which reason shouldn´t a Mexican player perform the piece in his own tradition?...that makes music (and especially Haydn) simply more interesting

  • 7:02

  • Hey everyone, see that related videos section? Click anything of Wynton's and you'll see what a real classical player is supposed to sound like.

Mendez may have an amazing sound and technique, but it is nowhere comparable to a real master's classical sound.

  • two performers, two interpretations, two different styles......who is better? I'll bet that Mendez would have had very little difficulty learning to play this piece "Wynton style" and Wynton would have little difficulty playing this "Mendez style." Ask Wynton....I'll bet he would consider Mendez to be a real master of classical music.

  • .... french?... really dude?... fail.... Mendez is totally my hero though. Hes the only one i've heard play this song and add all that stuff at the end. Absolutely amazing trumpet player.

  • First of all, I'm a girl, second of all it's VIZZUTTI, not bizuti.

And this comment can get voted down just like my others but that will not change the fact that Mendez is not a good CLASSICAL player. Never said anything about his technique being bad or him being a bad trumpeter- Just the fact it's not the standard for something like the Haydn.

  • jizzutti hahahaha

  • why does being girl have anything to do with anything?

  • Because if you didn't notice earlier in the comments there was this moron that kept calling me a dude. It was a response to him.

  • listen Crazy funky by minicillo

  • wtf, is he a french? strange french accent

  • that doesn't sound like a french accent. judging by his name he is probably Hispanic

  • i kno right he even says hes from mexico in the vid..jeez idiots deese days

  • mexican bro. he fuckin said where he was born

  • Mendez? French? OMG He was mexican xd How could you thing he was french? ;)

  • Like hes singing..... jesus

  • I lost an old mendes trumpet several years ago the someone stole it when I was playin Im still tryin to find it

  • I. LOVE. THIS. FREEKING. SONG.

  • His articulations are so orgasmic. shitt

  • @orjazzmicintentions hahahahaha you got that right

  • @orjazzmicintentions he only singled too!

¡¡¡Me encantaaaaa!!!

  • His articulation is so clear. Amazing.

  • lol why isint he lookin at the camera & my moms from michoacan as well!

  • @FG94 He is probably reading a board with info

  • Very well played. A master!

  • It's the same music from years and years ago... but so differently interpreted over the years... magic indeed.

  • jguzman455 Mr Mendez was proudly mexican!!!!!!!He was friend of my father, too trumpetist

  • Naw, Scoobyj...you just think she's very pretty...lol I agree, she's hard to beat and only 20 years old. By the way, I think she's very pretty too. lol

  • where is he from?

  • Comment removed

  • Ay! ayayayayyyyyyyy, ¡Qué buen señor!

  • haha my last name is mendez lol i feel cool

  • yes i am

  • what key is he playing in?

  • He is playing in Eb

  • I honestly think Tine Thing Helseth plays this the best.

  • One of the first Virtuoso Trumpeters that inspired many well known musicians such as Arturo Sandoval and Ray Vega

  • I don't mean this insultingly, but he kind of reminds me of if Gomez Addams taught trumpet.

  • Rafael Mendez in my eyes is one of the best trumpet players ever

if you have something stupid to say dont say it

  • you have to take into account that this video is in black and white and that there's a lot of static noises in the background. For such an old recording, this is amazing! : )) I bet Mendez sounded 50 times better live.

  • ..you know what they say about Mendez playing?...that he's on of the best trumpet players who ever walked on earth...you think i care about your opinion?....nigga please!!!

  • This wilshires1 guy is crazy...LOL Saying that rafael Mendez does not play this song correctly....FUCK HIM!!! He's just a mediocre wanna be who's trying to get publicity through youtube comments.....TOO BAD man...you will never be a good trumpet player.....Don't say that in front of people who really know about music..you know what Sandoval, Wynton marsalis, allen bizuti, Freddie Hubbard ect

  • Let me ask you something...Let's stop arguing about Mendez because like you see, Everyone disagrees with you...... Let's change the subject, what do you think about Wynton Marsalis? Are you gonna tell me he does not play classical music good either?...Just wondering.

  • One of the best of all times...:)

  • Everyone loves the 3rd movement.

  • amazing. i have got to find more of him

  • Um- The comment I left was not racist. Did I say anything about him being "Mexican" or anything to do with him being of a different race? No. If I heard anyone play the Haydn this way, regardless of race, I would still say this sounds more like mariachi style. Although he does have great technical ability- This is just the completely uncharacteristic way to play this piece.

If you are an aspiring trumpeter, and music is your major, you need to watch more traditional examples.

  • did you think of the recording technique that makes it sound thin and bright? Not soo much mariachi.

  • you know why you have -5 in this comment...

Because your comment does not make sense at all.......He plays this song the way it's suposed to be played...If you didn't know Rafael Mendez is one of the greatest trumpet players of all times...rated between the best 10...Who are you to say he's not doing it right?...If you tell me your name i'll probably not recognize 'cause you're not well known not even in your neighborhood....

  • Oh, and do you really think I care about a -5??? People just can't stand the truth. And he may be recognized as one of the greatest trumpet players of all time, but not as a classical player. As a classical player he is a freaking joke. That is the argument. Sure he is good. But he should not be playing the Haydn in this fashion.

  • All of my teachers told me that if i wanted to play trumpet correctly with perfect technique i should listen to Mendez.....Bye, take care...and keep dreaming and criticizing Mendez so everybody keeps laughing at you...we need clowns like you so we can all laugh a little bit...keep talking, don't you see everyone is laughing at your pathetic ass?.....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah...snap snap.

  • Please think before you talk, and stop criticizing Mendez because you will never NEVER PLAY LIKE HIM.

  • You're right, I will never play like him. I have the decency to play with a correct style on something as standard as the Haydn.

By the way- If you mean "he plays the song the way it's supposed to be played" because he plays all of the notes and rhythms correctly- then yes, he does play it the way it's supposed to be played.

My argument is that the style is completely wrong and is not classical at all. Haydn would be pissed. If you are a true aspiring trumpet player- FIND A BETTER ROLE MODEL

  • This discussion is not gonna get anywhere...... anyways stfu dude....the only one who's pissing everyone with your stupid comments it's you....Hayden would be pissed?? wow.....did you get to know Hayden?...lol Mendez is the best classical trumpet player of all times, and his double tonging is the best of all times.... what happens is you can't play like him, so you have to make shitty comments about his playing...lol YOU SUCK DUDE. By the way, I studied in a conservatory for 6 years..you know

  • Oh, also, if you were in a conservatory for 6 years, that would mean that you joined at 14, which is unbelievable.

And I think you're pissed just because you're cuban. Break the racial barrier and find a better role model.

  • Unbelievable for you because you're a mediocre.

  • who's your trumpet teacher?...if you don't have a lawyer, get a lawyer and sue him.

  • Comment removed

  • Mendez is one of the greatest trumpet players of all time, and for a very specific reason. He did not start his career by going to school to learn. He literally grew up with a trumpet in his hands every day and he played every single day. When all you really have to do to pass the time is play trumpet? Why do you take a guess to how he is so amazing ;-)

  • muito bom mesmo

  • How exactly do you "listen to classical music from 1800's" to "notice there wide and fast vibrato. " except by listening to the *interpretations* of the music by those "Classical" trumpet players you're talking about anyways. So how do you really know what it was supposed to be like?
